Winner of a video, I have been researching "kindle direct publishing author central" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Quonor Publish Peneplanation - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin got great results with it.

Such a wonderful video! I don't even want to write anything but I love hearing how people go about it. The importance of getting involved in the community and industry can't be underemphasised - since getting involved in the spec fic world it's amazing how much you come to learn just by getting to know what's going on, who's who and becoming friends with people!

Ariel Bissett great question! I'm still learning but for me it was deciding whether or not to self publish or go traditional. Self publishing has a stigma and can lead to a less professional book if you're not extremely careful but it also can give you and your book a lot of freedom.

This is very helpful and sobering without discouraging people from going for it in the book trade. Remembering that writing is a business with many factors that determine whether you are published are not is a great perspective to share with people.

Great video! I'm looking at finding an agent and would love to see a video with you and Charlie discussing some FAQs etc. Thanks for pointing out that you have to MAKE the time to write...I carry multiple pens and notebooks with me at all times, as well as my phone for recording quick sentences etc. I stay up late, I wake up in the middle of the night, etc just to write a paragraph or two. It was very refreshing to hear another author state that instead of the standard "I set a schedule and there ya go..." Thanks again! Bookish love back to you.

This is wonderful - organized, easy to understand and so, so helpful! At some point I hope that I will make it to the trying-to-publish-my-writing-stage, and it's great to get some pointers (that are comprehensible) on what I should do if I eventually make it to that stage. Also, I liked that you did not sugarcoat the process, but at the same time you were encouraging toward potential creators/creators. Thank you for making this! :)

What a useful video! Thanks for being the knowledgable fairy book godmother for fledgling writers. For your future video, I would love to know more about your personal editing style. I'm in that middle editing stage between the "yay, I finished a complete draft" and "time to find an agent," and I would love some similar detailed advice about how many times you edit, what you specifically edit for, how much time you spend editing before you end up just holding yourself back, etc. Thanks so much!! xx

Thanks for the thorough and easy to understand guide. I'm finishing up my MFA right now, so I'm aware of the earlier-stages of publishing like literary journals and chapbooks, but it was interesting to hear about the later stages and agents because that's something I haven't begun looking into yet. However, I am focusing on creative nonfiction, so like you said, some of this will be a little different for me.

This video was so informative! I'm not in the field of writing or publishing but I have always been curious about it. Here are a few questions/things I became curious about while watching this video. -I'm curious about the process for publishing graphic novels. -I would love to hear Charlie's POV. I'm curious about how someone becomes an agent and what the day to day work is like. I'm also curious how agents make themselves know and available to writers and publishers. -Spring boarding off of that I'm curious how someone becomes an editor and what the day to day looks like in that profession. i don’t like the idea of poetry competitions because poetry is from your mind and what goes on inside, your experiences and memories so what makes judges able to make a judgement if they don’t understand where you are coming from

This was fantastic! So helpful. I really appreciate you talking about poetry publishing because that is the area I'm interested in but have had trouble finding info about. How many publishing houses and agents did you have to submit to before being published/getting an agent? Did you get your agent before or after publishing your book of poetry.

I'll answer these questions in the next video but just to clarify that my agent has nothing to do with my poetry, and having an agent has not affected my poetry getting published. I submit all poetry things myself and don't mention my agent in those submissions as it's not a relevant detail. My agent just looks after my fiction/non-fiction books :)

Quite honestly, I think the old publishing industry would have to combine poetry with videos and social media and blogs, i.e. self publishing with much larger audiences to become profitable. IE a hybrid model. I know that goes against the old institutional format of traditional publishing. But there are people with huge audiences in social media who publish their work who then want to publish by conventional means.

That already happens - publishing houses work with Booktubers, and they have their own channels, too (Book Break, Vintage, Penguin Platform). Publishing those with large followings isn't anything new - it used to be celebrity autobiographies (and indeed that still happens) and publishing houses now sign up RU-vidrs. Likewise, successful self-published books (such as the Wool trilogy and Fifty Shades of Grey) can cross over into traditional publishing.

I have published 88 novels, and I am going for the world record for longest novel, yet I have self published yet to hold the record I have to be published traditionally, or have a external experiment back my writing what should I do, to hold my record for longest novel, I have work 10 years of my life to say that publishing my books in self publish is a sham or taboo or darty and is not good enough- please give feedback on this topic. The children books I have written are not chapter books, contain pictures and are approximately 15-20 pages long. Would you recommend I still employ an agent or go another route? Can we send send the copy of book to more than 1 Publishers so that they could read and see if they are interested to publish it? what if they just steal and publish it without our permission? is that any legal-security before sending our books to publishers before they get published?

Publishers will not steal your book. You own copyright. Copyright is not something you need to apply for and it is legally binding. As I said in the video, you need to approach agents first, who will submit to publishers on your behalf. An agent's website will state whether or not they accept simultaneous submissions.

I love Patreon and support creators on it :) the reason I'm not on it is because viewers can buy copies of my books, sign up to my online writing workshops and (soon) download an audio file of podcasts I create for 50p (which will also be available free to stream on RU-vid). So I figure those things are sort of like tipping (whilst also purchasing something you want). ☺️ which isn't to say I would never consider going on Patreon; it's just not the right fit for me at the moment. If you find after several years that your particular agent does not have your best interests at heart, can you switch? What if your agent sadly becomes eg. a drunk, & just isn't the person they were when they first became your agent, is it advisable to break the contract you have with them?

okay but how do you find an agent who's right for you? do you have to check every single website in the world? also, what's better - looking for an agent who has already helped publish an author you like, or an agent who's not well known?

Look through the Writers and Artists Yearbook :) they list the kind of books each agent publishes, from there you can go on to their website and see which authors they represent. I would think it would be a good idea to submit to an agent who represents a similar kind of book to you, yes. As for whether or not you'd be a good fit together, you will have a meeting with your agent before you sign with them (usually) so that you can make sure you're both on the same page with the direction you want your writing to go in/whether you get on together too (which is very important). It takes a long time to find an agent, and there's no short way of doing it (bar what I mention which will help you target people better). But hopefully it's only something you'll have to do once in your writing career.

In the UK you don’t register for copyright; you simply own copyright automatically by creating something. So you can write on it that you own copyright, but that declaration is not what actually counts; it’s being able to prove that you created it should that ever be called into question - that can be proved through dated email attachments, screenshots etc.

When sending our work to agents or publishers or competitions how do we keep them from stealing our ideas? Do we need to copyright our manuscripts? How does this part work?

This is not a problem I have ever encountered and I doubt it's one others have encountered either. No publisher or editor wants to steal your ideas - they just want to publish the good ones. As for copyright, you own copyright of something you've written, it's not something you apply for, you just have it. :)

actually this isn't all true! in the US you can actually pay to have something copyrighted, but in Canada and the UK, as long as you have proof that you wrote it then it's yours

Yes, you can pay, you can do that in the U.K., too. But that is not necessary and you need to be careful; there are lots of companies out there (some of them not legit) who ask you to pay money so you can send them a document you created, so if need be they can produce it later to prove that you created it. However, this is not what copyright means, that is just proof of copyright. Anything you create is automatically yours and thus copyrighted. If you email something to yourself, you can use that email to prove you had that document on a certain date etc, and so prove copyright. Getting patents for inventions etc is different again. Hi Jen, I am writing a book about how I healed myself from a specific and chronic health issue. I was wondering if you could give some advice on writing a book like this. I have never written a book before, but I really want to share my story, so it can help others who are suffering from this symptom I had. I know I have to be careful with the information I am putting out (because of the medical industry and doctors and all that) and this is what will make It kind of controversial! I am just a boy from Belgium who did the impossible according to the medical industry. They said it was for life...

How much does it cost for a agent ? As in upfront cost ?

great info-thanks .........i have 4 chapters of my biography and will continue writing - should i wait till the entire book is finished first before looking for a buyer...i know what you said and it seems to work similarly as the film industry, which is my first love .Just completed my first fiction piece, wrote and directed plus my first feature but both need work before I push them in anyway to market them .Also my daughter is an amazing writer and would like to represent her or find an agent for her work in the near future..........Thanks that video was an amazing amount of good information and I dont need to ask anything at this stage just wanted to say great video! I live in Sweden, but I mainly write in English, so I've always been planning on sending in an English novel. Problem is, not a lot of Swedish publishers will accept it, so I've been toying around with a few other ideas. 1) I write a book in Swedish and get it published eventually. BUT that makes me sort of worried that my potential agent is only going to let me write in Swedish after that, and I honestly can't see myself writing in Swedish forever. 2) I try to get published in the UK or the States. I'm guessing me being in Sweden is going to cause a few problems, though. Do you have any suggestions? Writing in English is a lot more natural for me, and while I'm perfectly capable of writing in Swedish I will probably do that half-heartedly, and I don't want that.
