After much persistence I also was able to land a dream job, only mine is in the videogame industry. It took me around two years to find this job (and it's technically my first job, first one that pays at least), and I have a pretty good academic record. So to add to Emily's tips, I would like to also say: - Volunteer to Gain Experience: Emily kind of mentions this in point 6, but I would like to put emphasis on this. There's the vicious circle of "experience to get a job, and a job to get experience", and with exception to internships (which are also difficult to land nowadays) volunteering for a position you're aiming for in a smaller company like a startup will give priceless experience and credibility. It shows your passion, and it shows your skills. - Persistence is Key: Like I mentioned, it took me a bit over two years after graduating to land my dream job (or any job at all for that matter), and I was fortunate enough to have the support of my family during my search, which I understand that not everybody may have, but you have to be persistent with your job and continue to apply to the jobs you want and going to interviews, all the while you fortify your curriculum, and if necessary work a job that will pay the bills in the mean time.

Alas, I just don't expect warp drive to exist any time soon, and that's kind of an important prerequisite for the position of Captain of the Starship Enterprise to exist, much less me doing it.
@catlinboy

You build a vehicle and name it Starship Enterprise. Someone's got to captain it surely?
@ktwreckcamp8465

Start with the Navy. Star Trek is based off the military structure of they US Navy. That's what Emily was talking about when she said pick out little details and find out how to work towards that goal. If you join the military, that will give you the discipline they'll be looking for in a star ship captain. You'll also be more likely to be present when that opportunity arises. That's another point they made in the video. Don't let something so trivial as lack of warp drive to hold you back. Start working on it now so you're ready when we do get warp drive.

All good solid advice, just one thing I'd add/be weary of: It's good to be helpful, but when it comes to unpaid internships and other work experience opportunities, realise that alot of people are just taking advantage of free labour. I have had work experience in my field where all I did was sweep up, and they've only ever rung me up to see if I could do free bar-work. None of it was beneficial to me or the field I want to work in. Any type of work without financial reward has to have some other type of direct advantage to you in exchange for your labour, whether that's actual experience in the field, tuition with a professional, or use of facilities/equipment.

Right now my dream Job is working as a video editor for one of these youtube channels. I've had a lot of people tell me that I should just try to get a news job because it's stable. I'm graduating with a Communication degree, so I can see why they say that. But I've been in my internship as an editor for acquisitions, and I kind of miss the creativity behind editing educational content.

A good video would be how to deal with the lack of motivation you feel after you get out of university and you have literally nothing, and it's so hard to get even the simplest shop job. I think a lot of people would benefit from a video like that

I DO have my Dream Job, but my parents and family in general does not aproove of achieving such 'dreamy' things in life. SO instead I'm studying something totally different, advised by them. I don't hate it to be honest, but my plan is- Get a job, make money, that way I would get a rep in my family (seriously, it's the only way I CAN please my family and satisfy my parents' long dreams for me) and THEN I would pursue my Dream Job. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but I definitely AM gonna do that! I hope I'm choosing the right path, it's the most difficult path One can ever create- pleasing your family as well as yourself- but that's pretty much what I'm gonna do. Wish me luck guys!

This is a helpful video Emily and I agree with a lot of your points. However, the story you told about your friends reacting differently to your additional work at the museum makes it sound like the ones who weren't that encouraging about it were not as good friends and not worth sticking to. Their reasoning could have been worry that you might overstrain yourself or spend a lot of energy on something that could end up not working out... I'm glad that it did, but it might not go that well for others. I guess all I'm trying to say is that in my opinion friends don't always have to be unconditionally excited of everything you do, and that it doesn't necessarily make them less of a good friend if they disagree with you choices.

As a young adult who is about to start university, I found these tips extremely helpful. I recently had a conversation about my dream graduate school and job with my sister and she scoffed at me saying I was crazy, but I know with hard work and perseverance I can do it. Thank you so much for this video! :)

My first job was at a nursing home serving food. I've worked as a clerk in a candy store and a liquor store, a desk assistant, and now I'm a bill collector at a large book publisher. None of these are in any way related to what I actually like to do: Illustration. I find it incredibly difficult to get work as an illustrator since I live in a small town and don't have the means to move. I'm not popular or well know and even if I offer commissions no one wants them. Breaking into the art world takes a lot of luck along with hard work, and I just don't seem to have that.
@thebrainscoop
@thebrainscoop 10 лет назад
Social media is an illustrator's best friend. It doesn't matter if you live in a town with a population of 5 or 5 million; if you've got an Internet connection and the dedication to update your blog a few times a week, as well as take the time to make the digital acquaintance of other illustrators, you'll be in a better position to getting more work.

Hey, Chai Tyto! I just want to second what ***** said. I know how frustrating (and sometimes painful) it can be to be from a small town and want to go into the arts. I am from a town of less than 5,000 people in West Virginia (a rural and fairly impoverished state): Growing up, I knew truly *nobody* who was a writer or filmmaker. But as Emily said, the Internet can be (and I use this term un-hyperbolically) life-changing. Two years ago, while living in WV, I was very very very lonely, and thought to myself, "How can I make new friends who like the same kind of things I do? Maybe I should start vlogging?" And while I guess it's true that I was (in some ways) "lucky," I want to take care to emphasize that for every "big break" I got in my career, there were a couple hundred things that just did not work out at all. I don't say that to discourage or overwhelm, but only to reassure you that things being a struggle is *totally normal* and is not a prophetic hint that you are not meant to be a successful artist. I also love this quote from Bill Gates: “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” In other words: All good things take time, and please be kind to yourself along the way. :] - Mike

***** I do maintain several pages where I post my work, but maybe I just don't post enough? I have a Tumblr, a DeviantArt page, and I post my stuff on facebook and even reddit sometimes. I still get very little feedback. I haven't tried reaching out to other illustrators because I always feel like I'm being bothersome. I guess I just need to muster up some courage and message a few people. Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.
@atheryne

How to Adult I feel the same way you did then: very lonely. I have no artist friends here and therefore no constructive criticism. My family and (few) friends are happy to compliment my work but never mention its execution or improvement. It gets very tiring to only hear that my work is "nice" or "pretty". I know it shouldn't be a cake walk, but I feel like I'm in quicksand here. A college friend told me a while ago that "It's hard to make art in a vacuum" and I find that exceedingly true. I try to keep going but sometimes its really difficult. Thanks for the vote of confidence, It means a lot.

Chai Tyto a good way of getting known is to comment on things and talk to people, and also to link together your social media sites. Since you commented about trying to be an illustrator, I'm curious now, what are your Tumblr and DeviantArt pages?

I feel that there's a sampling bias in videos of this nature - we only see the people whose hard work and dedication pays off, and not those who work hard and still fail because opportunity never presents itself. Or people who take the gamble and shoot for the stars (e.g. Gates), as opposed to those who take the gamble and end up destitute. Remember, for every store of amazing success, there's also a person living on the street.

My advice: 1. Work hard at whatever you are doing (you never know who is noticing) 2. Get co-ops (internships) 3. Don't be afraid of being rejected and apply to everything. That is how I got my dream job. I applied to 15 positions in one night. When my resume came up and my future manager saw I went to school with an existing co-op he asked "do you know her?" The co-op said "no, but she is always in the library or computer lab working." Co-ops are an awesome way to try out jobs for short time periods, because isn't just about what you are doing. It is also about who you are working with.

Point 1 is so crucial. I thought i was getting my dream job when i first got into software development. I do like and enjoy my job but i no longer think its my dream job. If i had looked closer at my reasons for choosing software development i may not have gone down the path i did and have a more for filling job. However my job does allow me to pursue my interests outside of work so i'm not too fussed about my current lot in life.

In my case I didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. After I busted out of the USMC I hadn't the faintest idea of what to do. So I took any job that sounded interesting. From cooking to bookkeeping, and Biology lab assistant to janitor and phone support. Now I am a welder and I couldn't ask for a better job. Don't be afraid of trying different jobs or be afraid to do hard work. I tried for years to get an easier job with better pay, and I hated it. And it's not only what you do but who you end up doing it for. Doing your dream job but working for a huge ass (doesn't count as swearing if talking about donkeys) might not be worth it, while doing hard work for an awesome company might satisfy you.

My problem is that I have hobbies and things that I enjoy or like doing, but those are separate from my aspirations and what I'm passionate about. I always think that if I try to pursue the things that I really LOVE doing, then I would feel unfulfilled because I was ignoring the big ideas and issues that I'd always wanted to work on.

But what do you do when you thought you knew what your dream job was for years but then started to doubt yourself because you start thinking and come to the conclusion that the job would probably (1) not make you happy and (2) that you don't really have the qualities/requirements needed for the job. Yet it still is your dream job and you can't explain why because it makes no sense whatsoever to try to get that dream job because you'd be really crappy at and unhappy with it anyway. Anyone else have that problem? I think I'm starting to panic a bit with graduation coming soon...

i worry about this too. i think the key is what emily said - leave time for hobbies! if you have other things to occupy some of your time and attention, it breaks up any potential monotony. either that, or you can try jumping around within your field - if you're an actor and you get sick of it, you could try your hand at lighting, sound, management, promotions - there are so many facets to theatre!

The funny thing is, even if you do get your dream job it's still not the same as having a forever job. Although I love what I'm doing right now I can definitely see where my priorities are going to change in a decade... at the pace I work now it leaves very little time for friends or family (or dating), but since I'm young and career-oriented it doesn't bother me as much as it might in a few years. And I'm learning so much in the meantime, and making valuable connections, that I don't worry too much that I'll be totally bored of the whole field. There's too much to explore!
@ktwreckcamp8465
@ktwreckcamp8465 10 лет назад
***** I'm in a similar situation with my choice of work. I don't see myself keeping my priorities the same a few years down the road. I currently run a small business making nerdy accessories out of duct tape. The business name is A+D Duct Tape if you'd like to check it out on facebook. When I first started out, I only sold the crafts I made. My business pays all my bills and a little extra each month. Despite this, I still have a fair few family and friends who get confrontational about their opposition to my choice of work. "How many 40 year old women do you know who do what you do?" "How long do you really think you can keep this up?" The truth is, I don't see myself doing what I'm doing now down the road. I evolve my business with time. What it is today is very different than it was last year. In the last few months, I've expanded to retailing rolls of duct tape as well. That's giving me some income that isn't nearly as time intensive as crafting. Now I'm working on expanding my work to include workshops as a more stable form of income. In another few months, I'll think up some other way to grow. Doesn't mean I want to abandon my core idea. I started with crafts as the priority, then that shifted to enabling people to try their own crafts. Now I'm shifting priorities again to more actively engage people in trying new crafts. Changing priorities can be hard to convey to people who seem to be telling me to give up and do something else entirely.
@1337longhini

Theatre, huh? Before I got into film, I was planning on majoring in theatre. I picked it because there were so many things I could do, so if I happened to get bored, I had other options besides acting. Also, it's perfectly normal and acceptable to change careers several times during a lifetime in this day & age! My advice would be to stay in the now. Always do what makes you happy but will also be able to support you. If that means switching jobs 20 years from now, that's fine, but trying to make the decision on what to do with your life based on how you *might* feel 10 years from now is only going to make you frustrated.
