You raise an interesting point that I'd like to respond to. Yes, extemporaneous is a style of delivering, but it's not merely about delivery. If we limit it to the in-the-moment delivery style, then the terms lose almost all of their usefulness. The type of speeches are all tied directly to the entire process of preparation (or lack of preparation as is the case with impromptu speaking) that allow for that type of delivery. In other words, these are types of speeches because the memorization process, manuscript process, etc. that happen behind the scenes are part of what creates the speech. This is one of the main reasons impromptu and extemporaneous speeches are often confused. In the moment, you can hardly tell the difference in some cases. What differentiates them is the preparation process. The method of preparation is folded into the type of speech it is. So, I agree that some people can make a manuscript speech sound fairly extemporaneous or conversational. I do both manuscript speeches and extemporaneous speeches and 99% of the time, listeners assume I'm speaking extemporaneously even when I'm using a manuscript. But that doesn't change the fact that speakers prepared a word-for-word manuscript beforehand that they are essentially stuck with. Extemporaneous delivery includes adaptation, expanding and contracting content, spontaneity, etc. in ways that manuscript or memorized delivery cannot accomplish. The audience may not realize that's what's happening because they don't know what the speaker intended to do in the first place. But when I give a manuscript speech, I can't really deviate from the script very much no matter how conversational I sound. I experience the restrictions that come with the manuscript. Now, as a speaker, I could throw out the script and just speak extemporaneously. I've seen speakers abandon their plan. But that's not really what we're talking about. But it's a good question. The bottom line is that the method of preparation is part of the definition. We might use the word _style_ as a shorthand but delivery is only part of the official definitions.

There are various cues RU-vid uses to screen out comments like posting links, offensive key words/curses, etc. If a commenter gets enough flagged comments, RU-vid make block them across all channels. Also, individual channels can block users and/or delete specific comments. It's all just part of using the platform.

Giving a speech in a 2nd language really requires tips,I agree with you

I get this question a lot but I don't have any advice for giving speeches in a second language. It's not my area of expertise. Sorry about that.

Agreed. And Impromptu is a great way to learn to speak from just a few words of notes and rely on a mental framework. Impromptu proves to speakers they don't have to be locked in to their notes.

I agree. I have also found if reading from a script, somehow the eyes can move faster than the mouth can speak and it just flows.

Aim to be absolutely excellent. The higher your goal, the more motivated you'll be. Also, I usually focus on making specific improvements each time I practice. One time through, I might focus on pausing and not using fillers. The next time through, I try to maintain good pauses but I also work on my gestures. The next time, I focus on practicing (pretending) to make eye contact. I just keep finding small (and large) improvements to make each time and it keeps me motivated. Also, by spreading those practices out over 3 days, you're motivation will be more refreshed rather than practicing 10x in a row.

No. I record up to 8 videos in one sitting and it takes me about 3 or more hours to do that. I have to speak from really detailed notes so that I don't forget my examples (or use the same example twice). It looks like you have a channel so I'm sure you know that making videos is a different process from giving speeches live. But I do prepare this way when I give speeches. This is the exact process I use.

@@alexanderlyon Yes and I have done it different ways. I have used a teleprompter and found it better to keep me on track. But it can be restrictive. Do you script 100% or use an outline for your RU-vids?

It depends on the video. Some are scripted entirely, but others are from key points or questions. But the way I script is that I create an outline of basic talking points first and then I just talk into the computer and it records and transcribes what I say for each point in a conversational way. I approach that scripting process like I'm practicing aloud. I stop. I think about how I want to say it. I may say some parts a few ways and keep the best one. So, I script by talking and it's much faster that way as well compared to typing.
