As I tend to wear py clothing for a loooooooong time but don’t relish wearing faded clothing and as I tend to hang my washing outside to dry whenever possible, I’ve learned to overdye. Because no matter how careful you are about washing, about the detergent you use about turning clothing inside out for washing and drying etc, there is always fading in the end. And I don’t see any reason for throwing out clothing simply because it’s faded. Loss of shape, maybe. Irreparable holes and tears, yes. But fading isn’t reason enough. So out comes the dye pot. Our sweater looks so good again! And never mind those towels. Even if they’re ood. They’re still capable of drying. LOL

Came out really nice! I didn't know onion skin could be used that way. I really wanted to depill that sleeve at the end, tho. 😂

Nooooo, slowly and manually depilling is my fidget for when I have anxiety, don't take that from me 😂

This video came at the perfect time! I’m knitting a sweater with my onion-dyed yarn and needed to dye more yarn to (sort of) match. Unfortunately, I forgot to mordant the new batch, so it’s just a peach color. Sadness. I’ll be over dyeing with the proper mordant this time, haha ❤

Looks great and I love the variation in the colours :) I've always read to pre-soak the item you're going to dye in water for a few hours or even overnight before mordanting or dyeing, to help it absorb the colour/mordant more evenly and also to help it sink down in the pot xxx

You can get them sometimes in the store by asking the produce person for the loose skins
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 6 месяцев назад
Indeed! Or just scoop the loose skins in your bag when buying onions.
@Tinas_Workshop

@MijnWolden That too. We used to dye our Easter eggs with them and mom would ask for them at the store, they would bring us out a big bag and we would have enough for our eggs without needing to save

Yay for over dying! I too have started saving onion skins in case I decide to attempt this later this year. Question, though - did it fade from just wearing it or possibly washing? Admission … once I block a sweater, I rarely wash it again 😱 unless it needs to be reblocked or it gets a surface stain of some sort. I always have a shirt underneath them and don’t see the need to regularly wash them. Nonknitters are appalled when I admit that! Am I alone?
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 7 месяцев назад
Nope, it might have been washed once in the year that I have been wearing it. Just some airing out next to a window after I've worn it and it's good to go!

I think I saw an impending hole under your right arm! Maybe it is time for a video on darning, as a further step in Favorite Sweater Preservation?

Haha great idea. However I might think it is more of a: how to pick up stitches under the arm as to not have holes video 😅

could you keep the onion-colored water and then heat it up again at a later date to use it to dye something else?

I will have you know English will always fail. it is a bad language. 1 out of 10 do not recommend speaking. I love the golden yellow that yellow onion skins make. your sweater once again looks like sunshine.
@MijnWolden

Wouldn't recommend Dutch either 😅
@leahgroess5361

It looks to me that the differences in the multiple yellows is more caused by being crumpled in the pot and not moving around to have more dye exposure, but of course doing that with a wool sweater is extra risky! I think the variation in color is cute, and it's one more aspect that shows it was handmade. I don't recall what this was dyed with initially, was it always onion yellow or was this yellow from a different source?
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 7 месяцев назад
It was always onion yellow. I did move it around, I just don't film every second of what I do 😉

I love following along with your adventures using vegetable dyes and this sweater so much that I have plans to do so myself. I'm trying to collect enough onion skins to dye wool, but most recipes suggest using half the weight of the fiber in onion skins to produce a strong color. Since your sweater weighs about 450g, does that mean you collected 225g of onion skins?
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 7 месяцев назад
No it was not 225grams, maybe close to 100grams.
