You might want to instruct people to withdraw the plunger before putting the needle into the bottle, then push the air drawn into the syringe, into the bottle, to avoid causing a reverse vacuum inside the bottle, as otherwise, people will be fighting their medication being sucked back into the bottle.

When I said withdraw the plunger, I hope you didn't take that to be to pull it all of the way out of the syringe's plastic housing. Pull the plunger back to the amount of medication you'll be giving (air), then push that amount (or a few more milliliters...a line or 2 on the syringe's side) into the medication vial. Tap out any air bubbles you see and push them back into the bottle and withdraw medication again until you're rid of all the air bubbles. It can be taxing at first, but you'll quickly get the hang of it!! 💉

This was helpful in some ways but not others...no explanation for why to change out needles midway, and the "pulling back" aspect wasn't clear at all. Thank goodness I read a WikiHow article that mentioned drawing in with the syringe while it's inserted because that's not AT ALL what I gathered from this video. I did find other aspects of the video very helpful, but I do recommend redoing it with clarifications like this. Also, it would help if you addressed things like the arguments below that this isn't a safe place to inject bc of injection site sarcomas. I don't know if there's an actual alternative for at-home administration, but an explanation at least for why doing it this way would be greatly appreciated!
@IamFrancoisDillinger
@IamFrancoisDillinger 2 года назад
In case you're still wondering, the reason you change out the needle is because inserting it into the vial can slightly blunt it. Using a new needle ensures it is sharp and penetrates the skin easily, which will also cause less pain for the cat.

Ask your vet if B12 pills will suffice. I give them to my diabetic cat and she loves them (fish flavor). After all those insulin injections I don't have the heart to stick her any more than necessary. I also use urine test strips to check for glucose & ketones instead of another stick.

You should advise individuals to inject the same amount of air into the bottle each time as the amount of medication being withdrawn to avoid causing a vacuum with future medication withdrawals.

Good video. However, more and more veterinarians now prefer to give cats subcutaneous infections (vaccines included) on their hips or side rather than among the cat's shoulder blades. This seems to lower the risk of malignant skin cancer like the injection-induced sarcoma.

That's just what I was thinking. In 2018 I didn't think any clinic would still be giving any injection in the scuff. This is where I used to give my cats injections way back when no one knew better but with the new guidelines in regards to Injection site Sarcoma in felines I was looking for an up-to-date video demonstrating how low on the limbs you are now supposed to give the different vaccines. I'm surprised that a video made in 2018 didn't show the correct method.

Just a few things about the video. You need close-up shots. Show those bubbles in the syringe and show how To flick those bubbles out. Show how to do this with a normal size cat or a very small thin cat. A heavier cat is easier to see what and where you’re doing this but I think more people can relate like me who has a very thin cat with cancer. you provide no explanation for using two needles. One to draw and one to administer. Other than that thank you as I appreciate the video. One last thing it would be helpful again to show up close and explain the bevel on the needle.

RN for humans here. You put your finger on the diaphragm of the vial and did not wipe it with alcohol before inserting the needle. In the 5 years since this video was made the injection sites have changed because of risk of sarcoma development, in order to limit the complication to limb(s): FVRCCP vaccine: below the R elbow Feline Leukemia vaccine: below the L stifle Rabies vaccine (by Florida law, only a licensed veterinarian can administer): below the R stifle

I think they mean, you don't want to accidentally poke through a second layer of skin out the other side. I did that once. 😬 I made the initial poke through the skin, but I went too far and it poked through the other side. And I suddenly saw dribbles of red B12 fluid on her fur when emptied the syringe. Because injecting the vial blunts the needle so would cause more pain and be harder to inject your cat

Yes. It helps to pull up on the skin by the fur to insure you are injecting into fatty tissue (to ensure little to no pain) and inject straight in (vertically not at a diagonal) stick the needle all the way in then slowly push the medicine.

Important question! I was not told to insert the whole needle by my vet so I assumed that if I got the minimal amount in I would be fine. However after that I saw a diagram of how much skin there is above the sub Q space. If you only insert the tip of the needle you will get it only into the skin. But then another vet told me that I shouldn’t worry if that was how I was doing it because it would eventually absorb. It would just take a little bit longer.

I don't know what went wrong, but following these instructions lead to failure. I inserted the needle into the loose skin, though there was a lot less of it so it was much harder than it looked in the video, and did the gentle pull back thing to make sure it was where it was supposed to be, and tried to inject the medicine, and it all squirted out between my cats hair onto the fur in small droplets. All of that expensive liquid wasted and my cat didn't get a drop of it. I can only assume that somehow the needle pushed through the skin and out again on the other side. I'm going to have to find better instructions before I try this again, because these clearly aren't foolproof and I'm probably one of the worst fools in written history.
