Confession is such an amazing experience. I was baptised catholic last Easter and I've been doing confession every week. Such a great tool to get closer to God and develop a healthy conscience!

Aw, phenomenal explanation!!! It’s remarkable to me how different the Church is from when I was younger, I’m 53 now. Went to Parochial school, my knuckles have finally healed 😂. We went to Confession and Mass every morning. I literally dreaded confession because the Priest was so wretchedly mean to the point that I would become nauseous on my way to school. My big sister and brother felt the same but we never discussed it with our parents. Sadly, my siblings died by their own hand and I didn’t attend confession for over 30 years after graduating. Thankfully, I returned in 2010 and feel so much lighter. We adore our Parish Priest and are so thankful to God for him. He’s much like you, very relatable, welcoming, kind and has a wicked sense of humour. What a true blessing! Bless you, Father for all you do.

@@VinesThroughTime I’m showing you that what you’ve been taught is wrong. I’m trying to help you. The Catholic Church teaches different then what the Bible says. Would you rather obey Gods word (bible) or the catechism written by man. It impossible for God to lie, so everything in the Bible is true, right? Why would the Catholic Church tell you that Mary was sinless when the Bible says there is only one who is sinless, Jesus. Romans 3:23 (“For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”) This is just one example. Please think about it, I don’t want you going to hell out of ignorance. I too was catholic, until someone challenged me to read the Bible. The whole Bible, not just a verse here and there and my mind was blown away. So many contradictions. It’s your choice to follow Jesus or follow your church. I’m here to help you. Bless you

@@camp5607 I'm not going to hell. and you have zero authority over God. You do NOT know me or my walk. I do NOT know you or your walk. but if you are going around socking it to people out of your self-righteous ego, YOU are causing discord between God and his people. You will cause discord in your own heart. Micromanaging other people speaks volumes about your YOUR insecurity. You are here searching for people to confuse them and disregard their spiritual experiences & love of Jesus... WHY? Because of your own stuff. Not ours. YOU are the one assigning sacraments as weapons, not me. not my priest. He is a helper that gives me solutions when I'm stuck. Sacraments are gifts to stay on the up&up, because the closer we get to God, the more jealous the devil gets. Therapists sent me deeper into hell. The (good) priests reach down into the muck and offer solutions. Not all priests are good, I know this because anywhere there are people, there will be evil. we are in a fallen world. please quit micromanaging people in their most sensitive time. instead, look inward. please. Don't project on others

@@VinesThroughTime I’m here to show you that you’re headed for a cliff. If you choose to keep walking on your path, that’s your choice. But if nobody has ever warned you about the approaching cliff, how will you know about the cliff? Do you agree that the Bible is Gods word and God cannot lie? I hope your answer is yes. If so, you might not realize that the Bible is telling you one thing, and the Catholic Church is telling you something else. 🤔 did you ever play the game telephone when you were growing up? The idea is one person says something and you go down the line whispering into each other’s ears and by the time it gets to the other end, it’s something completely different. That is the Catholic Church. God made the Bible so you would know what was said in the beginning. I’m just asking for you to think about it. Why would the Catholic Church teach something different than the Bible?
@mariekatherine5238

If you’ve been long-time away, just go. Remember, the Sacrament is forgiveness from Christ, not the priest. He represents Christ only. It works just as well, even if you get Fr. Grumpy who’d rather be playing golf! If you wish to make a decade’s worth or more, it’s best to make an appointment, but if it’s a spur of the moment inspiration of God, just go, and the priest may simply ask you to return another time to finish before receiving absolution, especially if there’s a line waiting to get in. I came back after 46 years away from the Church.

The only reason why I don’t go to confession here at my church is bcoz the confessional is located where people are sitting outside & can actually hear everything you’re saying! When I went & that happened I walked out , I thought to myself why should everyone else hear my sins ? I usually go outta of town which is 13 miles away , the confessional is located far away, people sit on pews & I can’t hear everyone’s sins ! I know it’s not the best idea but it works for me !

Wait, am I reading this to say that you’re angry that they won’t offer absolution because of your insistence on continuing in a mortal sin? If I read it right that’s like saying “I want to do everything for God accept this one thing I’m addicted to, I’m keeping this one.” In order to receive absolution you’re supposed to resolve to do your best to not commit the sin again. If you refuse to do that it indicates a lack of remorse for the sin and saying “God, let me be god on this one.” So of course he can’t offer absolution in that instance. The most he can do is is offer a blessing and pray for you. Since I can see this is is painful for you, I want to remind you that if following Christ were easy, everyone would do it and the pain we feel while trying to get on the right path and stay on the right path is one of the largest motivators for growth. To be pure in heart and mind, we have to follow Christ’s teachings not what we wish them to be. I will of course pray for you that you as I would any person who’s hurting that you may find peace in the Lord and a willingness to continue growing in faith. I try to remind myself daily that as hard as life gets sometimes, it’s still a lighter cross to bear than Jesus’s. Since your comment is 6 months old, I do hope you’re feeling better, whether I misinterpreted your comment or not, I wish the best and love you as I do all people. We all sin and we all struggle with specific sins, I will not cast stones at another person’s sins because they’re different than mine so please don’t think I mean it that way. I’ve been praying for the humility to return to the sacraments after being away for 35 years so I also have a lot to confess, but I’m also praying for the willingness to accept Gods plan for me and to do His will. The St. Francis prayer has been helping me as well as praying the rosary twice a day. I removed most social media from my phone, I deleted all of the memes I had saved as well as all of the pornographic pictures women have sent me because I have difficulty with lust and fornication. It was near the end of a 6 day fast when I was feeling down I was praying and asked God what He wants from me. I had been selfishly praying that my truck be repaired so I could return to work after two months in the shop. I asked if I’m being called back to the church, then I said if that’s His will I would return even if my truck were repaired before I got there. At that very moment my phone vibrated but I continued my prayer. When I got up off my knees, I looked at my phone and saw that vibration was a text saying my truck was ready. It was the day before the part they were waiting on was supposed to be in. Since then I haven’t stopped praying daily and while I’m sinning significantly less, I’m trying to gather the strength and humility to fulfill my calling to return to where I’m being called. Because I was only a few days away at that time from a date with suicide, I was praying from the heart and in tears, rather than the usual just saying the words of a prayer because were supposed to. That’s when it hit me that my struggles were meant to get my attention. Before that I was trying to find a god that fit what I wanted him to be but the god I’m supposed to pray to is the one I truly believe in whether I’m conscious of it or not so the way for me to know is to remember who I pray to when death seems certain, and there’s absolutely no where else to turn, for me, that showed me through the most genuine prayer that not only does He still care about me, and that he uses my struggles to help me, but that He’s been a part of my life all along and it was me who was being selfish and trying to decide between right and wrong with my selfish and fallible mind. Since I feel called back to the church I left as part of Gods will, I feel remorseful of my sins and have a true desire to not commit them in the future. I’ve been tested on them several times already and have recognized them every time so far and only given in once and then found further ways to reduce temptation. By resisting temptation, we are serving God and he sees our successes and He fills my heart with joy every time I resist and do the right thing. For me, the greater the temptation, the better I feel after resisting it, then I offer a prayer of thanks and gratitude for the strength to resist and the opportunity to realize I can do the right thing with His grace. Sorry, I didn’t mean to write a novel, lol. I just wanted to relate with a story of my own struggle to help you not feel alone because even with the differences, I see some similarities between them. I have no idea if it’s helpful to you but it is truly from the heart and maybe it’s meant to help someone else scrolling the comments, either way, I pray that you’re feeling better and may God bless you and anyone who reads this.

Why does the priest who listens to the sinner’s sins during confessional ask for a donation in exchange for expiation? Why does the priest sometimes ask for double the donation in exchange for the sinner being able to have a future sin forgiven or expiated? Just last week there was a story in Utah of a 26 year old admitting to murdering an elderly couple and stealing their credit cards during a confessional. The Priest during confessional asked for a $1,000 donation by credit card in exchange for forgiving the sin of murder & theft. Isn’t this an abuse of a confessional? During the confessional the priest asked for an additional $1,000 just in case the sinner wanted to repeat the crime with a second victim. 5464

Honestly what nonsense. I doubt this story is true. First of all, there is the seal of confession so no priest would leak this story, Second, the priest can ask the congregation for donations at any time (usually 'any other business' at the end of Mass), thirdly, the priest would know that not only was this a wrong thing to do but he himself would be sinning gravely by asking for money in this way and finally, the priest would have encouraged the man to go to the police, turn himself and the credit cards in. If you believe this story to be true you should contact the Bishop of the relevant diocese and discuss the priest's behaviour with him, naming him but not the penitent - since that is for him to do. Be responsible. Stop spreading stories or step up to the plate, and do the right thing.

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Matthew 27:50‭-‬51 KJV When Jesus Christ died on the cross. He tore down the veil in the temple that separated us from God. And only the priest could go in and pray to God for us. Because Jesus Christ has torn the veil spiritually we can go to Jesus Christ ourselves. No need for a confess to priest anymore. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:7‭-‬9 KJV

The concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. First, the New Testament does not teach that there are to be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests. First Peter 2:5-9 describes believers as a “holy priesthood” and a “royal priesthood.” Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 both describe believers as “a kingdom of priests.” In the Old Covenant, the faithful had to approach God through the priests. The priests were mediators between the people and God. The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can now approach God’s throne with boldness (Hebrews 4:16). The temple veil tearing in two at Jesus’ death was symbolic of the dividing wall between God and humanity being destroyed. We can approach God directly, ourselves, without the use of a human mediator. Why? Because Jesus Christ is our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21) and the only mediator between us and God (1 Timothy 2:5). The New Testament teaches that there are to be elders (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9), deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11) - but not priests. When it comes to confession of sin, believers are told in 1 John 1:9 to confess their sins to God. God is faithful and just to forgive our sins as we confess them to Him. James 5:16 speaks of confessing our trespasses “to one another,” but this is not the same as confessing sins to a priest as the Roman Catholic Church teaches. Priests / church leaders are nowhere mentioned in the context of James 5:16. Further, James 5:16 does not link forgiveness of sins with the confession of sins “to one another.” The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition. Catholics do point to John 20:23, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” From this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins and that authority was passed on to the successors of the apostles, i.e., the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church. There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises or even hints that apostolic authority of any kind would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. (3) The apostles never once in the New Testament acted as if they had the authority to forgive a person’s sin. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures. The ability to forgive sins is God’s and His alone (Isaiah 43:25). The better understanding of John 20:23 is that the apostles were given the responsibility of declaring with utmost certainty the terms on which God would forgive sins. As the church was being founded, the apostles declared that those who believed the gospel were forgiven (Acts 16:31) and those who did not obey the gospel faced judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 4:17). As the apostles proclaimed salvation in Christ (Acts 10:43) and exercised church discipline (1 Corinthians 5:4-5), they were wielding the authority Christ had given them. Again, the concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. We are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we do not need mediators between us and God. We can go to God directly because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. First Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

No, but if you read the church fathers you will see that early Christians, even before the New Testament was written, were to confess their sins before one another. The evolution is that now the priest represents the community so that scandal is avoided from having everyone's sins aired in public.

The church’s claim to the right to pardon leads the Romanist to feel at liberty to sin; and the ordinance of confession, without which her pardon is not granted, tends also to give license to evil. He who kneels before fallen man, and opens in confession the secret thoughts and imaginations of his heart, is debasing his manhood and degrading every noble instinct of his soul. In unfolding the sins of his life to a priest,-an erring, sinful mortal, and too often corrupted with wine and licentiousness,-his standard of character is lowered, and he is defiled in consequence. His thought of God is degraded to the likeness of fallen humanity, for the priest stands as a representative of God. This degrading confession of man to man is the secret spring from which has flowed much of the evil that is defiling the world and fitting it for the final destruction. Yet to him who loves self-indulgence, it is more pleasing to confess to a fellow mortal than to open the soul to God. It is more palatable to human nature to do penance than to renounce sin; it is easier to mortify the flesh by sackcloth and nettles and galling chains than to crucify fleshly lusts. Heavy is the yoke which the carnal heart is willing to bear rather than bow to the yoke of Christ. { Great Controversy, Ellen G White, CHP 35}
