I was chatting to a mate who said they hate going to the toilet outdoors and that they avoid it. That made me really sad, as I love hiking and I'd hate it if the fear of going to the loo prevented anyone form going hiking. I love going to the toilet outdoors - to be honest I actually prefer it to a normal toilet.
I love my Deuce of Spades Ultralight Trowel at on 16g its brilliant: amzn.to/3g7r9zb
I hope this video helps people and I encourage people to comment below on what they do - as I think its a learning curve working out what works for your situation.
I also chat about going for a wee as a woman and tips to not have to use toilet paper. Having your period can stop women going outdoors and that once again upsets me as I think it shouldn’t stop you. I simply wrap used tampons or pads in toilet paper and then put them in a ziplock bag and then in a second ziplock rubbish bag. I like to use old ziplocks that are rubbish (for example ones I’ve had food in and finish using).
The main rules are
- use toilets where provided
- Pack out waste if you can for minimum impact
- Dig a hole about 15-20cm deep
- 100m from water and the trail
- Cover the hole when finished
- Its best if you pack out toilet paper but a small amount of biodegradable paper in the hole is ok
- Alway pack out sanitary pads, tampons and condoms - they will not breakdown
Be sure to leave no trace and leave the environment in better condition than you found it.

I've got friends who reckon they can't poo in the bush, but if you've gotta go... Thanks for being brave and (not actually) showing how it's done!

Haha, you beat me to it Kate! As I've been travelling along there are just too many sites with old toilet paper scattered across the ground and so close to camp, so this was one of the first vids I was going to make when I get home... I may still give it a go... I'm all for the 'poo soup' method (swirl the whole lot together with a stick until the TP no longer has any white bits), because apparently it helps a lot with decomposition of the toilet paper... and you get to play with your poo before you bury it! bwahaha 🤣 that might be a step too far for some though, lol. After 7 weeks wild camping you tend to lose any inhibitions about that sort of thing though 🤷‍♀️
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
haha totally Amy you should absolutely make a vid. I love the idea about mashing it all up. I'd never thought of that. Thanks will def do that from now on. Another person said it also stops things like foxes digging up the poo. Going to embrace the swirl. Cheers

That was such a great vid. I haven’t seen anyone else do one before. Such a simple thing but great to get uniformity so everyone does the right thing. And who talks about poo and wee - no one!! Good on you!!!

You can also burn the paper in the hole before covering it over in case something does dig it up afterwards.

Great vid. A tip I learnt is to use a stick to mix some dirt in with your turds so that way foxes etc don't come to dig it up again to eat. It also mixes in some soil microbes (to potentially) help it all break down faster. The stick can also help back-fill your hole

I also recommend carrying some dog bags to pack out the poos and paper, in the instance the ground is just too hard or rocky to dig a deep enough hole. No worse than picking up and carrying after the dog, but always double bag it, at very least. Tie and carry on the outside of your pack, rather than inside it, should you need to pack it out and carry it. The dog bags weigh nothing and do come in handy for carrying other forms of rubbish and even using as improvised rubber gloves to pick up rubbish that others have left behind at times.
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Oh cool tip - they would be great little rubbish bags too. And good on you for cleaning things up. I always like to take 3 bits of rubbish each hike too

To reduce or eliminate paper have a look at hiking bidet’s like the Culo Clean bidet, great when you get used to them
@mrt18709
@mrt18709 3 года назад
I've considered a hiking bidet. Aside from the cold factor, I find it hard to come to terms with the water usage (weight & scarcity), compared to TP.

I’ve recently used the Shee-Wee - not a huge fan of the rigid original. Recently bought the GoGirl which is available in a lot of stores in Australia. I’ve only used a few times but like it better. Then I use a ‘bidet’ attachment on a drink bottle to rinse myself quickly (funnel still in place) - doesn’t use much water and if you’re not touching it to your body it’s fine on your bottle. And have now bought pee rags to dry the water off - yet to try but hoping it’s better than the little rag I was using as a towel. In theory will be cleaner as I’m wiping off water not pee and don’t need teepee! (I also have tried making one from a rubber funnel I found at the hardware store - it was better than the shee wee but didn’t pack as small as the go girl).

so good mate. Yes it is an acquired skill. It can turn up interesting things. On kangaroo island I dug a hole and when to the toilet Turing around to see something very weird - a funnel web spider crawling out!!! Long way from my backside but I did feel a little bad for her. Love the idea of a pee cloth. I’ve been meaning to try one but never got onto it.

Ironic that the ad before your video was the one where the guy is saying "Did you know that at any given time you can have up to 20lbs of toxic poop in your body....." Baahhhaaa! I like holding on to a smaller tree branch for stability when I go. That's always seems to help me.

Trying to dump into a hole around only 4 inchs in diameter...sounds like a skill. 😂 i usually just dump onto a large leaf , carefully pick it up, roll it into a kebab, then throw it as far as i can. Ideally it should get stuck up in a tree. The benefit of this method is it acts as a momentary hand warmer. 😂

I find it sad that most Westerners never learn the art of squatting, thus making toileting in the Great Outdoors a much more challenging act than it should be. All of us should commit to teaching our kids or nieces and nephews the art of squatting from an early age. Also practice squatting for extended periods at home, to develop those toilet muscles, as they come in handy for so much more than just toileting when hiking. So helps if you develop the muscles to keep you both stable and comfortable, when taking a dump, especially. That old brain muscle connection kicks in, just like riding a horse or a bike. Definitely leave no trace, though I love it that I have peed my way outdoors across 4 continents. Something akin to marking territory and leaving about as personal a stamp as possible, to make you truly one with your surrounds. Very primal. Like you I shake myself off after a pee. So much toilet paper left behind by less courteous "environmental anarchists". Gross and truly bad form.
@KateGrarock

Totally got to love it. It is supposed to be better for you too. Bring on the squat toilet.
