In this video I will be showing you the best way to increase your upwind reach while in planing! This technique is simple and requires only a little practice to really get the feeling of it.
It is especially helpful for those riding small gear like wave or freestyle boards that have smaller fins but is suitable for all styles of windsurfing.
I hope you find it interesting and helpful.
If you enjoy the video please leave a like and subscribe to my channel. Any questions of recommendations for future videos, just drop a comment!
Good luck, have fun and keep riding!

Nice video. When planing ,usually all it takes to start an upwind course (not too close but gets you up) is just looking pretty high upwind. That alone seems to make all the adjustments to stance etc that somehow it works....
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Yes usually this should be plenty to get you upwind! Of course this depends on if you have a good body position to begin with, which many dont have! But looking upwind is definitely the most important and basic part! Add in the rest of the movements I talked about and you should be able to increase your upwind reach in no time! :)
@kittinplus4

indeed it feels strange and kinda overdoing it (or posing even). Arrived at this stance by trying many combinations and was feeling a bit silly ("surely it can't be correct, but somehow this works!") but thanks for analyzing it all and making sense of it.

Thank you again for a good video. I'm not at this stage yet but good to get information! I am struggling with getting planing, just as I am getting on the plane my board starts to wobble from side to side. Or then the board just really lifts out of the water and then tip over to the side and crash. Some say I have too much weight on the back foot. Some say get planing before getting into the harness. Some say get planing while in the harness. I'm lost 😅 help!
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Hey! No worries... its a hard part you are stuck on but you will get through it soon! And then you will feel the real thrill of windsurfing! I dont recommend the getting planing before getting into the harness method because it is not necessary and it is tiring! Get planing while in the harness for sure... Now to deal with your problem try to get more pressure (not weight) onto your front foot and use the harness to create more mastfoot pressure! This will keep your board flat on the water and help you keep things under control! I have a video on that as well so go check that out! I hope this helps! Keep riding and have fun! :)

Can you do a downwind and beam reach tutorial? Do you always close the sail and put your weight in front?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Hey! Yes I probably will get around to making one! Closing the sail is correct (of course there is a limit to how much) but just to clarify it is pressure you should be putting onto the front foot not weight. So you body weight/mass stays more to the back of the board when heading downwind but you take the power of the sail and through your body you lead it to the front foot, that way giving out pressure which will push your board down and keep it flat! Hope this helps and covers your question! Have fun and keep riding! :)

I tend to lose too much speed and come off the plane when sailing upwind, what could be causing this? I can't put too much pressure on the fins as I sail the thruster 21 + 2*11cm on my 105 Kode so I do engage my front leg. TNX - great videos - loving the channel
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
First two things that come to mind are: 1. Make sure you bring your body more upright (over the board) as the more you hang back the more power from the sail goes to holding up your weight. 2. Your front leg needs adjusting. Its not enough to simply bring the pressure there. You have to make sure you keep pretty much the same leg position as when normally planing. So dont bend the front leg. The more you bend it or relax it to feel more comfortable the more speed you will loose. Hope this helps! Enjoy! :)

Thanks, I'll try next time ! 've been sailing for 20 years but never been able to go upwind proper'y.. it always limited the fun of my wave sessions and it's been frustrating. I realise I always have my front knee bend and back leg straight. I.ll try the other way around next time ! What about heel/tow pressure ? Do I keep my feet flat or do I put pressure on heel or tow ? Also, even though I'm pretty good at tracking, i do not really lean thé sail back when I want to sail ypwind (I do it for tracking only). After 15 years of wave sailing, I'm back to slalom and it seems like a very good school to get bzck to the fundamentals. I can loop forward or do aerials, but feels stupid when i need to go upwind !
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
Hey! Try it out and let me know what you think. I think in slalom training you will for sure be able to improve and feel all the details better. As for the heel or tow pressure I would say it depends on your board as well as the conditions you ride in. Usually I try to keep my board as flat as possible but this could differ in other conditions or for other riders. A flat board I find can always maintain better speed and control. I hope this helps! :)

As im learning i am not transitioning into planing and have no idea how i will ever get out of the middle of the board... tips for this learning phase would be good... it seems there are the very early learning curve bideos and then carve gybing at high speed... but nit much in between..
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 3 года назад
Hi Mike! I will look into filling that gap! But for now try increasing the power in your sail and keeping it as constant as possible. When you do that you will find that it gets harder to hold on to the sail (due to there being too much power). At this point you need to slide your feet back and outwards little by little. Your goal should be to reach the outer back part of the board (where footstraps are) but of course this cant be done without the equivalent power in the sail.
@Westcoastwindsurf

Do you also weigh up the harness to keep the board speed up and to prevent it from turning into the wind?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
I dont really understand your terminology.. sorry! But basically my harness is like it always is and by bringing the weight and pressure to your front foot, it should be enough to stop the board from turning into the wind. I hope that answers your question! Enjoy :)

Thank you! For wave gear: Would you recommend pressure on the windward or leeward rail?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
If anything it would be windward rail. But the reason I dont put any emphasis on that in the video is that it depends a lot on your board and fin(s). For instance on my fin and on some of my wave boards the best option is to keep the board pretty flat! Or at least not actually focus on putting pressure on the rail because I tend to use small fins in choppy waters.... You have to try it out with your board and see how it works. It defers slightly depending on your weight, the fin size and the water conditions! Enjoy! :)

This is the video that i have been looking forward to. thanks a lot!! one quick question, by seeing pro surfers the gap between outhaul line and center of the board is pretty close, it looks like almost touching the board, when I try to bring the sail back as much as they do my board is spining out and loosing speed. what is the problem?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Hi Joseph! I hope this video helps. What you are describing is specifically for big race gear. The shape of race/freerace sails and the usual large size allows the sail to come down close to the board when pulling it back.Also this is combined with a large or at least race style fin with can take a lot of pressure. So depending on what you are riding this may or may not be possible. You will not be seeing this for example with small gear and non race equipment.

But i thought weightening the windward rail is especialy helpful for small fins because the whole length of the rail is helping to Go upwind and not only the fin. Weightening the leeward rail i thought is for Race/freeride boards?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Again this really depends on your board... My wave boards respond like this yes. But my freestyle board doesnt really like pressure on the rail. The best advice I can give you for this is to simply test it and see how much rail pressure your board can take before you notice it has the opposite effect! :)

Donˋt you weight the windward rail for going upwind?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
I left that out because it is more a freeride/race style technique in my opinion. Like I mentioned in the video, what I am trying to show is a really all around technique that your can use with any equipment! I use this same technique to go upwind on my freestyle board as well and there is works better to keep my board pretty flat... But if you are riding a freeride/race board with a big enough fin then weight in the windward rail is also good! :) I hope this helps! Keep riding and have fun!

@@ralfberndt3493 Like I mentioned it really depends on the board... What you are saying is definitely not incorrect, dont get me wrong! @@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind This is a really interesting point to me. I guess I've been stuck on the idea of railing the leeward side of the board in order to get upwind at a fast speed, but maybe that doesn't work for one of my boards/fins, and may work well for the others...back to experimenting!

Like you said it is a 'somewhat' bent leg, which means you would have to precise with your control of it and Nico is talking with a lot of focus on race style gear and riding. I would still recommend to not bend it as a general rule. My video tries to focus on a technique for everyone and everyday level riders and so I believe the best way is to focus on keeping it pretty straight (it will probably naturally bend a little for most people anyway). Of course I am not saying Nico is wrong, he is a fantastic sailor and worth listening to! Hope that clears it up a bit :)

@@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind Thanks for the feedback.. My feel for upwind is not too oversheet the sail with the overly bent front leg and excessive pressure on the back one - thus stalling the sail and messing up the flow over the fin. Having said above, a disclaimer - i have intermediate windsurfing skills, so I may be wrong on a myriad of levels.
