How to grate a Coconut quick and easy | Best way to grate coconut - Beginners guide
These are some snippets from a conversation between myself & a food scientist ‪@goodnessfarm-mj‬
I highly appreciate the way you have parsteamed it and grated..
Par steaming the coconut before grating helps avoid microbial contamination
Coconuts are highly susceptible to contaminants like harmful bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli, which can cause foodborne illness and molds and fungus.. that's why even Gobrai was banned recently in many countries..
Steaming the coconut before grating it can help kill any bacteria that may be present on the surface of the coconut, thus reducing the risk of contamination. Apart from it steaming also helps to soften the coconut, making it easier to grate.
---
Here is the quick summary
1. Break the coconut , remove the water
2. Keep it in freezer for 24 hrs (Best results) if you are in rush then 12 hrs
3. Take out after 24 hrs
option a = wait for 10 mins and add in hot rolling boil water
option b = immerse immediatly in hot water
4. Refer the video for pointers to observe
5. You can easily now remove with the knife and ladle - tips are given in the video
6. After removing , peel the outer brown skin if you dont want to use. its quite easy
7. Chop & Grate options are discussed in the video for Ninja
For chop - use Chop option for 3 mins
For grate - Chop 3mins, followed by IQ manual - speed 4 for 3 mins
The quantity here is 1.5 coconuts to 3 coconuts
8. For mixie - do pulse for 4 times and grind in only speed no. 1

Before throwing negative comments pls understand that I am not boiling coconut here , I am parsteaming it which cuts the microbial contamination. Pls note that coconuts are prone to microbial contamination and I don’t live in a place where coconuts are grown & it requires multiple rounds of travel before it reaches my kitchen Can we just not compare a kitchen in a place where there are coconut trees to a kitchen which needs coconuts to be imported More in description of this video.. Ppl who are questioning on nutrient loss wonder why never questions the same coconut nutrient loss when cooked in some recipes 😀 + trying to figure out where am I boiling here 😅

Super Gayatri, glad to know.. yes the yield looks higher if we grind this way as there are more airspaces and not compressed . It makes scooping easy when we take out

Neatly and clearly explained and shown as is always seen in all your and Mami's posts/videos. 👍🏻 I have noticed this working best for coconuts that are not very old ( the ones that are a shade or two darker in exterior colour take a little more effort ) which arw wheatish in colour like how you have shown. The brown skin in bewteen the shell and the coconut flesh too would be lighter in such coconuts. I don't do the partial steaming part. I keep it in the freezer overnight+, take it out and rest it for sometime/ maybe even just immerse it in drinking water for 10-15 mins and try to remove the coconut flesh. The ease and beauty of this procedure though works best only for such shown light brown skin coconut which are hard to find in cities in India. Even our own well known chennai city pazhamudhir shops, Saravana, Surya greens, kalpavriksha etx only sell the darker than wheatish shell ones. Most of the time I buy one, cleanup break, scrape using the hand held scraper and store it in an airtight container. One container / packet per coconut as of there is some issue which a specific coconut the rest if any don't get contaminated. When kept in freezer, I have stored it even upto 6-8 months with no spoilage. As you rightly mentioned how long and how as such we thaw it and take care of a batch has full effect on the product we plan to store and use / it's shelflife.

I am not sure on India Here we get coconuts from Malaysia which different in shape itself and the yield is more as compared to india ones for the cost we pay. It’s also because of the logistics cost

@priyasuryanarayanan1959 Год назад
@@NeesKitchen thank you for the reply. Yes, I noticed the difference in look and hence had replied earlier. Yes, the yield looks more and also quite good. I wholeheartedly appreciate the effort and work that you put in to ensure no stone is unturned ( even when it comes to the simplest of things that people take for granted but which is important for newbies or even a pain point for the seasoned home cooks ). When people watch videos being just engrossed in it and wanting more sometimes they forget there are one or more humans behind it who have put in a lot of thought, planning, execution ( I am putting it a few words but it is not that at all ), all through also being a part of the family of any size with its own commitments, health etc. When you see the behind the scenes pics and videos one comes back to reality and realizes it at least to some extent. I can't appreciate you and Mami enough. 🙏🏻👍🏻

@@NeesKitchenI remember my MIL sharing this procedure without the steaming part as a video that was doing rounds on WhatsApp some 4-5 years back. Even in that the coconut shell was wheatish in colour and hence the process was smoother. I remember even telling her that the coconut ls we get in the market in cities don't look this way and nor do they look round, it is mostly oval dark and small. I am sure the comment to which you have replied only mentioned the reference to the basic process followed ( break, freeze, try to nudge the coconut flesh out, peel and pulse grind ) being already seen elsewhere.
