I just bought a camping trailer (1993 StarCraft Meteorite) and the previous owner told me the last time he changed the bearings was about 5 years ago. I was a little nervous (not having owned a trailer before) but after watching your video, I have the confidence to be able to do it on my own. Thank you so much for your informative video! Cheers from Montreal, Canada! PS...hope you enjoyed your pint!

Outstanding video sir!! I just picked up an old jet ski trailer and I am going to turn it into a kayak trailer. The first thing I wanted to do was check the hubs/bearings and I wasn't sure how. I don't have that issue now, your video walked me right through it. I really enjoyed it. Thanks again.

very good tips video, have run my trailer - previous owners well over 300,000 miles, my miles = 60,000 miles {all on what was thought to be bad bearings} , some pitting - same bearings. What actually saved them is a set of "bearing buddies" from the start. grease shots before each trip, before each launch, after each launch, before return trip & before storage. After 70 + years, same bearings & bearing buddies, 3 sets of seals, 4 sets of tires, regards

A very good video. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge . I have a number of bearings to replace on the press wheels on some farm machinery (a Moore Unidrill seed drill) which has much the same hubs and bearings as your trailer . I was not really confident about doing the job myself but am now more than happy to give it a bash ! Surprised and delighted to find that you make such videos as this to compliment your excellent fishing videos. Again, many thanks !

Very nice video.I have greased a few trailer wheels and bearings.Just seeing if anything has changed.I bought a wheel bearing packing tool to force the grease into the wheel bearing.I am fixing a trailer and needs new grease and bought wheel bearing protector caps with grease fitting.

Totally Awesome video as always. I changed my bearings on my trailer yesterday and you should have seen the rust in there from the previous owner, yes RUST! (new to me trailer)...needless to say, she's rolling smooth now and can't wait to get back on the water =)

Great video but you did not need to buy a new hub. The metal racers that the bearings ride against inside the hub can be knocked out and replaced. Cheers

couple of bits of advice, firstly if you want to save yourself some money in the long run and save yourself getting mucky, pick up a cheap full size grease gun for cars, which you simply slip a cartridge in to, the guns are about £12, and each cartridge of 500cc of lithium molybdenum high temperature grease is about £2 on ebay, quick, simple, lasts you ages and nearly mess free, as for the bearings, im only used to changing them on land rovers so trailers are new to me but im surprised you can't also change the bearing races as that would save you from buying a new hub when this happens, but anyway great video!

Don't know if holds the heat, but I have heard it just softens up and runs out ? I have found that after a long run towing, then dumping the hot hubs straight in the water emulsifies the grease and makes it go milky ? I get that all the time, but I always pump in more grease after a dump in the water to push any seawater out .

Great video and thank you for sharing. Have you considered using bearing savers that can be bought relatively cheaply and keep a constant light pressure of grease on your bearings which will minimise the chance of water getting in.
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 5 лет назад
Yes,but I have heard mixed reports,so I just go the manual way and regrease every time I put it away.

Always check locally with a dealer/bearing stockist to double check everything .You can still do it yourself, Maybe Google up that model and see if anyone has some tips on that model. The more information the better. Good luck.

Absolutely amazing, all the exact information I was looking for to replace my trailer tent’s wheel bearings. One question, how would you do the final filling out of grease if the wheel hub doesn’t have a grease nipple?
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 3 года назад
I pack it with my fingers as well,but then I don't know about a wheel with no grease nipples.
@billmcburney1723

I'm assuming you packed that bearing before installing as buddy bearings tend to spin grease to the outside so thank you for a fine video .

if you trailer with the wheels in the water, wich is really not nescessairy, you could also drive around the block when the boat is off. It will dry the bearing.

Good video however it made me a bit nervous seeing you hitting the wheel studs with a hammer. If the studs are froze up in the hub you could easily mash the threads on them. My tip for this is to thread the nut back on to the stud about three turns leaving the threads protected...Never Fails !

Good video, but I have always heard that over packing a hub and bearing can have the opposite affect and HOLD heat in , the grease heats up and loses its viscosity, better to only lube the moving parts and let them breath???

Good vid just wanted to know why you brought a new hub when the outer bearing can be tapped out with a hammer & drift also all wheels should be done up in a cross pattern to pull the wheel on square just a bit of helpful info for you. Also you should tighten the bearing first then release the nut then adjust your bearing. Sorry concerned ex mechanic c&g

Hello Graeme, I have a quick question for you your trailer looks like its the unbraked type I was under the impression someone would need a braked trailer for the size of your boat please explain Nice Vid very helpful cheers
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 8 лет назад
+Ross TurneNo,the trailer is specially made as a "bunked" trailer for the Wilson Flyer range.Wilsons are light, they come inside the braked category. Heavier laid up boats might need braked, so for anyone buying a secondhand boat with no trailer it would be worth checking the boat's weight. I can launch the 17 foot Wilson on a good slip on my own.They also used to make a 14 foot Wilson,and that might be a good entry boat for anyone starting. Hope that explains your enquiry.
@rossturner8581
@rossturner8581 8 лет назад
+TAFishing Thanks for that Graeme I am assuming 750kg is the limit you are refering to? also do you consider a bunked trailer better for long distance trailing than a roller trailer Cheers

Do you reckon a 6 tonne press could handle removing and replacing a rear brake drum bearing?
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 10 лет назад
No idea on that one. I would type the same question into your search engine, but add the word "forums". There is sure to be comments on there somewhere for that question, and you might even run into an expert on the subject who can give you the right info.

Too much grease will over heat and kill your bearings. You never want too much or too little grease. To much and your heat cannot dissipate causing over heating of any bearing.
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 10 лет назад
I did hear that one before, but then I've also heard it said of those spring caps that push grease in automatically. I know when I dunk my trailer after a long run it sends the grease milky white where it must have been warm. Best to strip out and regrease every once in a while. New grease is not exactly expensive.
@edwardcharles9764
@edwardcharles9764 9 лет назад
It's made the grease milky white because the water has emulsified it, not because it was warm.

Зачем обматывать ступицы лентой? не проще ли слегка деформировать колпачок, что бы лучше держался
@RKalos

The way you load the bearings with grease is totally wrong...you have to pack them not put the grease on the outside of the bearing,also the type of grease you put is not the proper one...you have to use heavy load lithium based grease type 3 or type 2, you must not use all purpose use grease.If you do that you wont have to thik about it for the next 3 years minimum...
@Michael-B41
@Michael-B41 9 лет назад
salt water may have hurt the grease though but still too much grease isnt good either
@Michael-B41
@Michael-B41 9 лет назад
too much grease will overheat the bearings and shaft , i dont think salt water is your problem lol
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 9 лет назад
+michael brown I think saltwater was,as I saw a trickle in the base of each bearing where it sat on the axle stands. But you are right on the overheating with too much grease,I've heard that from others.Apparently if it overheats from a long tow,then you launch straight away,the salt/cold water emulsifies the grease and it goes milky.
