Just a muddling conversation I had with Leon Humphries while skating the ledge. We discuss grinding techniques and psychological tricks that we think are useful to learning how to grind better on aggressive inline skates.
Additional footage courtesy of Mark Trebble and Simon Mulvuney. With thanks to Albert Hooi and Chaz Sands.

Is everyone’s warm-up trick a Soul grind?
@nicholaswest9146

My warm up trick is consistently a soul grind. Next are frontsides typically, which helps me transition to doing royales.

Leon has the most recognisable TTS. I could see 1/100th of a second of it and I'd know it was him! Cool video though, definitely understand the mentality around the grind-stop thing. Royale is the best example of that - really pressing into the top edge, almost like a cess slide and just riding it out.

This is a massive help guys. I'm getting back into skating having had a 23 year break with literally ZERO skating. Five stone lost in six months. I'm about where I need to be now.

The jump above the obstacle is so on point. I realised this seeing Soichiro skate in person and couldn’t not see it everywhere after. Makes a big difference with topsides, that split second of extra positioning time.

Being on top of the obstacle is probably the best advice. If you can't 180 out from a grind you are not enough on top of the curb. If you grind a rail you should be so centered that you can choose the side you get out. Of course go at it gradually. Being in my forties the beginning of my sessions are just taping the rail, putting weight only on the makio foot, and I progressively warm up to a strong centered and controlled grind.

2 Awsome things I`ve drawn from this is 1. Visualisation. I an SOO onboard with that at the moment 2. It never ocurred to me to just approach a grind ledge at 90 degrees and practice jumping on and off it before you commit to actually grinding!! Very valuable lessons. Thanks guys

I think another good tip also is "don't move". Jump on the grind in a way that all you need to do is stay tense and ride it through. No balancing, no floppying around your arms just a single movement from take off to landing. Of course not possible on the 666rail, but I'd say it should be good up to 10m?

this was sick, thanks for the tips. I'm getting back into this, but on standard rollerblades by Rollerblade, the Zetrablades, with the middle wheels taken out and a hint of soul plates to make use of. haha. fun for now, and nostalgic, as this is how I started out. looking forward to getting aggressives again when I can for sure!

That jump up and then down is a good one for me, I dont do that often. The one I do the most is to visualize it going the other way (regular or fakie or whatever). So one grind becomes another and they all just lead on to each other basically. Great tips!

I saw that comment on fb. The wording was kind of bad but i got it. The post wasn't saying to actually stop on the grind, it was about the approach and body posture and the way you kind of brace your legs is similar to when you are trying to stop

The one bit always missing from my arsenal was actually being able to jump on anything meaningful, I still skate from time to time and I have decades of skating and cycling behind me so I have strong legs but zero "up's"... Not having a ounce of jumping ability has been my biggest hurdle to continue to skate and keep pushing, I know jumping ability is something that come natural to some people I just wish there was a training program for skaters to help increase ability. Great vid anyway guys...

That 'theory of grinds' bit at about 2:30, 100%. When I was younger and just getting into skating with a few mates, the mate that got best at grinds during that time period often did this - maybe not on purpose, but he'd basically just try and stick the grind with weight right on top, even if he didn't have the momentum, and would often stop still balanced on the object, rather than jumping off early.

Nice vid! Also maybe a nice thought: always commit 100%, even (especially) on easier stuff on lower obstacles. It usually is this stuff where you fuck up and fall. Edwin Wieringh (RIP) mentioned this mindset in an interview or edit once and it always stuck with me. Not that I follow that up (currently still suffer from injury where I dislocated 3 fingers at once during a simple backside on a curb...)
@Felger
@Felger Год назад
When I think of "stopping" on a ledge or a rail... I think of being perfectly balanced just losing speed so you pretty much "slow to a stop". That way you know you are right on top of your grind. You just need more speed.

Usually find myself tensing up for certain grinds and def have trouble committing to them or sticking them properly. I'm gonna focus on the relax part next session and see if it helps anyhting for me :D

relaxing is 🔑, let the skates fall in place, picture your entire body movement as you grind and follow that mental picture in real life. You got it!

Back to skating at 42 after 23 years without and I have sprained my ankle grinding (because of the repetitions). I don't know what to do so it doesn't happen again and feel a bit devastated... Has it happened to anyone? Is it because I relax too much the ankles? Should I keep them much more stiff (less bend though)? Are there any exercises that would avoid this again?

I think im gimping myself. Im learning grinds but at my park its all ledges no actual cylinder railing. As someone who is skating flat is double hard to try and stick a frontside without my whole wheel getting a big bite of the edge. Any advice for learning strictly on square metal railing?
@LocoSkates
@LocoSkates Год назад
Personally I wouldn’t even bother with frontsides on square in a flat set-up. Too much opportunity for wheelbite that it just makes it no fun. Stick to grinds that you can get ‘boot-down’

Can we not have skate reviews? Even if it was just shorts linked on the site with each individual model that would be a real boost. By this I dont mean top 5 of this or top 10 of that. Actual each skate you sell reviewed?
