Oldskool. I did a self sand and valve lap on my 22R Toyota head (learned it from your vids)... now no valve leaking and 185 psi compression test!! PTL! Machinist wanted $260 to do a valve job and head resurface...and they don't work on weekends! You rock Oldskool! T/Y!

What about reconditioning the guides (with new ones), checking the head for leaks and cracks, facing the valve, and cutting new seats. What you are doing is just lapping the valves, that's it.

tempest411 Your over analyzing it. He saved money and did the job with pride. Great job Coolramone, keep on being independent and keep from getting ripped off. @ tempest I will be making a video this year on how to do all that at home. Head resurface Grinding valves, valve guide removal and replace, cylinder head pressure check (yes how to check for a leaking cylinder head) all at home. 2015 im gonna knock the sockz off the haters and reveal all my trickz.

Thank you so much for showing how to do stuff without needing this expensive stuff. Im a teenager on a budget and its going to take a while but this will make it so much better. The fact that I can do this is amazing and it's rewarding. I personally enjoy the fact of doing without a machine because it's so much more reliable.

Dude I've worked in a machine shop for years doing everything on valves from mild to extreme, but when push comes to shove your method will work for re-sealing the valves, unless of course you have warped or burned valves. Keep on showing the broke folks how to keep their cars running on a very limited budget because Lord knows back in the day I had to do the same shit you're doing now just to get by. And don't forget the valve stem seals. Peace.

I'm glad you showed it both ways via drill or suction cup. ME, being a First Timer think I'll just use the suction cup because I don't have your finessing skills or years of experience. I'm retired so time I've got. Every time the ole lady yells at me I just go to the garage anyways. Lol! Out there I can smoke & drink too.

Your statement is totally false. I do repairs on the cheap all the time on my vehicles. When it comes to Lapping Valves, it does very little on an engine that is warmed up. It is proven the valve heads expand and no longer seat in the same place on the valve and seat as they did when cold. You are only lapping cold components. .......... When the head is removed, just check to see if the combustion chamber holds gasoline or water without draining through the closed valves. If they do, clean the carbon build up and just put them back together with new seals as long as the guides are OK. .......... If they leaked and you are totally broke, then the bandaide of lapping can be tried, even though, when the engine warms, the sealing surfaces will be in different places and "HOPE" for the best. .......... I worked professionally since 1980 and on the flip side, I knew how much I could get away with on my own stuff. I knew any redo's on my own stuff was 100% on me if it failed for some reason. ..........

I did this on my 83 Toyota pickup 22r. And to a buddies of mine 93. I had to replace all of his valves. Just lapped them to the seats. That was 9 years ago, still runs like a top today.

My car has been park for such a long time because of a blown head gasket, I got ripoff by this mechanic that didn't do the job right and I paid for the part's and labor and the car only lasted 3days before it broke down couldn't really afford to take it to a shop but now I know I can do it all by my self because I enjoy working on cars myself but only the basic tune ups and brakes and so on but I never mess with the motor and just by watching your video I learned so much Thank you, you are a blessing to this world who cares enough to help others like me. keep up the good work

With my race car, a 496ci Big Block Chevy with very expensive aluminum heads, whenever I have the machine shop recut my valve seats, I always give them a good valve lapping...just to be sure the valves have a good seal. I do them the same way...sort of... I do use two grades of lapping compound. One is course and the other is fine for a nice finish.

Hi Oldskool, I'm back. Today I finished grinding the six valves on the drivers side head. I had already improvised a test fixture from scrap material in my garage and could put 125 psi of pressure in each cylinder. No leaks. I'm waiting for new valves I ordered for the other head as I had valve strikes in all three cylinders. Timing chain slipped. Thank you for teaching me and keep on telling the Good News!

Thanks Old School, used your instructions on sanding the deck and head worked great. Doing the valves I used the cups from a hand lapping tool and put then on nut drivers for a drill, and then put them on the drill and used downward pressure and hopped them lightly up and down, as well as changed rotation. Using Old School methods I saved at least a grand plus, maybe more. Sweat Equity, thanks again.

Thanks for the excellent vid, I've ground heaps of valves in the past just like this, with excellent results. Only real difference is that I test the seat with petrol/gasoline at the end because if petrol doesn't leak though, pretty much nothing will. like you, I generally do most of the grind with the drill and finish with the hand tool. While the head is off, it's probably a good idea to check and/or replace the guides and seals to. Thanks for sharing :-).

This is a smart method. Valve lapping and just cylinder honing can restore a tired engine a "Poor man's engine rebuild" I've gotten engines not to smoke, got 30 percent + increase in compression. Also, a method I have used is I had cut and machined the wooden handle of a suction cup honing tool to fit in the chuck of a drill, and lapped them from the "other side" but the vacuum hose method looks like it works great!

Absolutely this will work. As a matter of fact Ive done it this way many times. I bought a 50 chevy out of a field that sat for 25 years. Every thing was seized. when I finally got it to crank, the pushrods bent from the valves being stuck. I freed up the valves and got it to run but had a dead cylinder due to an exhaust valve not seating. I filled the cylinder with air, removed the valve spring and chucked a drill right to the valve, released the air and put lapping compound on the valve through the plug hole. I then lapped the valve, put it all together and the compression came up from 50 to 125 (or whatever the rest were) and ran perfectly until I sold it a few years ago.

I was looking online yesterday for DIY info for valve grinding, found this and watched it along with several of your other videos. Just tried it on a valve to see if this old fool could do it. Well, this old dog learned a new trick from you. Before going on to do the rest of the valves I just had to come thank you. I just got done doing this on a 1992 Ford Ranger cylinder head (2.3L I4) with 230,000 miles. This method works -- and if you're like me, I not only hear the difference, I feel it too. While most people won't do it, I use a finger in the direct middle of the valve, while it's spinning, to be able to push on it slightly. Basic premise is to be able to push the valve in and out, and hear/feel no difference. But like Old Skool said, this is for those of us who are basically poor and broke -- and with my valves and valve seats, especially considering how corroded and worn they were upon removal, why would I spend the $1,000+ to have a shop do this work, when I can DIY it? But OS is showing the proper technique to do this -- only thing I would add is to move the valve in and out so as to give a more uniform grind to both valve and valve seat. Note: I wish I could upload pics to RU-vid in comments, just to show how badly they were worn, and how they look now. Worlds apart, all thanks to this method -- plus the amount of money saved.
@benellimon

Very nice video. (Would have been nice to see a before and after cold compression test.)Question - is there a risk that this method removes too much material from the valves and their valves seats, so that the valve clearances cannot be properly set because the tip is too close to the camshaft/rocker arm?I am working on some old Yamaha FZR 600cc engines which are notorious for tightening intake valves so this method may be too aggressive.

In all seriousness this is a good idea on valves that have been ground correctly from the factory. Since almost ALL manufactures use a 3 angle correct valve job, there is no reason to regrind the seats. That could mess with stuff and sometimes inhibit flow. It is a good idea to do it this way if there are no obvious pits in the seat and you just want to re-seat a valve for a rebuild.

And I thought the vacuum hose approach was a me original haha- did this on a honda head. I also discovered that one can do a 3 angle seat grind with permanent marker, a dremel, and grinding stones dressed to 30 and 75 degree angles. Permanent marker on the 45 seat will show how wide the contact area is. Gotta' be very careful of course, one slip and it's a trip to the machine shop. I narrowed my seats down to the width I wanted and the head has run great for over 5k miles now.

You guys that say you need grinders, mills etc, are correct.... by modern thinking. They don't teach this stuff anymore in school but there are many ways to repair things if you have the knowledge and experience. Old timers did different kinds of repairs and knew how long they would last. Some engines react well to certain repairs but not to others. I've seen loose rod bearings repaired by grinding the caps and lapping.

Another great video. I remember when I was in college trying to do this with the wooden suction cup tool and gave up and turned the head over to a machine shop. Some questions though: 1) Don't you have to make sure your valve guides are good first? 2) Why aren't you using blue dye/ink to see the seating? 3) Are you reversing drill direction at all or always just going clockwise? 4) On a 4-valve/cyl engine, those valves should be getting at least a 3-angle valve job. Is this just a single angle or are the three angles somehow reproduced with this technique?
