Used this 14 years ago in all bathrooms and kitchen counters/floor and it has been flawless through raising kids, parties and hosting drunk people who spill wine and food drippings everywhere. Cleans right off the grout lines with just the nylon side of a damp kitchen sponge. Those white magic erasers work fantastic too, but wear out quickly. All my rentals get Spectralock Pro grout. It's so tenacious I still have a dab of it stuck to the tile under a toe kick that I cannot remove without a chisel and hammer, so there it sits.

I put pebble tile in 2 bathrooms, including entire floor in both, one wall, one shower (where I used kerdi), lots of trim, etc. I used spectralock epoxy grout on all of it. Lots and lots and lots of grout, as you might imagine. Both turned out great and it's about 8 years later now, and we've not had any problem with either one. I'm currently doing a subway tile backsplash, and plan to use spectralock for that--although it is overkill for a backsplash, I think spectralock is far superior to conventional grout, and worth the slight additional cost and hassle.

Totally agree, it’s not cheap but saves money by not needing to be replaced. And for an epoxy grout it’s easy to use. Definitely worth checking out for any tile project.

I am repairing Spectralock epoxy grout that has come loose between the wall and floor joint in a walk in shower. Your video says that one should not apply this grout to that junction but instead leave a contraction and expansion joint. Should I just be repairing these gaps with a matching color of Latasil instead replacing of the grout?

Pretty pricey....a typical wall shower (plus floor) would need 4-5 buckets at $32 ($160) plus part C at $16 ($80), plus 2 tubes caulk at $27 ($54), plus white scrubby ($16) for a total of $310 just for grout....a bag of normal grout is about 1/10 that.....I'm sure epoxy grout is much more durable and maintenance free, but it is an up front investment.

you're absolutely right, it's expensive but Wedi also recommends it for the shower pan. That and knowing the grout is good to go for years is why we chose epoxy

Why is it necessary to use caulk instead of epoxy in the adjacent plane joint? We used caulk between our tile wall and fiberglass shower pan. The caulk cracked and we had water damage as a result (water got through caulk crack and ran behind the caulk horizontally along back of shower pan toward the wall, dumping water out onto wall. We had a mold problem secretly growing on wall hidden behind our baseboard. Someone just recommended we use epoxy grout instead of caulk between the tile wall and shower pan so that we don't risk another crack and repeat water damage on wall. It sounds like you're advising against that though. What would be the harm using epoxy between wall and floor?
@waynejdiversi3084
@waynejdiversi3084 4 года назад
Because all joints move and therefore require a flexible sealant. Epoxy won't flex and is far stronger than tile so if you have a tile they'll likely crack or potentially, a shower pan may split.

The corners need to be able to move, especially if one wall is an exterior wall. If they can’t move, something is eventually gonna give from the pressure build up.

Love the channel and has helped w my recent bathroom remodel. Quick question about Spectralock and the Latisile caulk that I don’t think has been covered. Do you grout the joint between the shower floor tile and the drain (I noticed you had the drain open) or caulk that joint? Same w the change in plan inside the niche? It is easy to float the grout inside the niche but wondering if the change in plane from the niche wall to the niche sill needs to be caulked. A video on tooling the Latisile caulk would be awesome! Thanks for the great content. It’s been very helpful.

per the TCNA Handbook any change of plane needs flexible sealant inside a shower. For example at the ceiling or shower pan/vertical wall tile. Only 100% silicone should be used inside the shower but at the ceiling you can use siliconized acrylic that’s paintable. We grout the tile and drain grout joint

These are great tips. I have a mosaic floor I am going to grout with this. Obviously, there are a lot more grout joints to do and I can't avoid kneeling or standing on the grout joints by doing the whole floor and then coming back to clean up. I probably have to do this in sections. What advice can you give to do a whole floor with one batch? Do one side and then do the other side and then clean the first side and then the second? Then come back and do more from the first side? Does this make sense? I would appreciate the advice. Thank you.

Small batches help a lot, those Mini buckets are perfect. Temp and humidity factor into the work time, if my memory is correct we had 20-30 minutes until the Spectralock need to be tooled. The extended video inside Bathroom Repair Tutor has more details. Steve did an awesome job explaining this installation

In all honesty, this product really isn't for a complete novice. There's a procedure to follow and not much room for error. You can break the amounts down into smaller batches by weight and work in smaller sections. Just look at how fast the pro was going - you won't be able to do that and will mess it up if you rush. The clean up is most important. Plenty of water, scourers and sponges. Don't be scared to throw away sponges and scourers. They get pretty grubby pretty quickly.

First, great video. You guys are great. Can the expansion joints in the corners be done first to prevent the epoxy grout from getting into the corners? I'm guessing no because the joints would be wet for too long.
@HomeRepairTutor
@HomeRepairTutor 6 лет назад
Thank you, we do the grout first because it sets up faster than the silicone. This allows the grouting to be done then sealing the corners on the same day. It’s relatively easy to clean the Spectralock from the expansion joints with a spacer or dull knife

It looks like epoxy grout continues to pick up steam. Thanks for a great video that explains how it can be applied more easily than some might suggest. What are your thoughts on using epoxy grout when a moisture barrier has been installed behind the tile? With traditional (cement-based) grouts it seems there might be more opportunity for trapped moisture to escape through the tile/grout as this grout was more porous, thus the moisture barrier behind was OK. Now with these epoxy grout products that are non-porous, would be inappropriate to still use a moisture barrier behind the tile?
@tedspens

hope you can help out, I am redoing the floor grout with epoxy grout, currently a sanded cement based grout, i had tried removing as much existing grout as possible. but just not possible to remove all of it, what would you recommend, would you recommend removing absolutely all old grout before applying epoxy grout? thanks a million
@ronh9384
@ronh9384 5 лет назад
No you don’t have to remove all of the grout. Use a triangle grout removal tool and remove an 1/8”-3/16” of grout and you should be good. If your are changing the grout color you should try to make sure none of the previous color is showing at the edges of the tile. Basically if the old tile had a normal width grout line the triangular grout removal tool will bottom out against the two tiles on either side of the triangular grout too. Hope that helps. Ron

Do you guys ever use the Spectralock Pro in the inside corners? I would think epoxy would be more likely to hold here than cement. I realize every change of plane is recommended to have silicone, but wondered if it's better than cement grout in this application, or worse. I'm using Spectralock Pro specifically because white was specified, and the worst offending areas are normally the inside corners with staining, mold, and mildew on silicone.
@chrisjohns38
@chrisjohns38 2 года назад
I've had to do maintenance (scrub and eventually re-caulk) inside corners. I'm tempted to try to grout corners (for myself!) to see how long the corner grout and tile hold up. If movement is minimal, I expect it will hold up a lot longer than caulk. But if expansion ruins the tile work, well, that would be a failure! I'd like to find some examples of failed grouted corners somewhere here in youtube land....

Trust me, it's worth it. I've used it in two houses; in the bathroom and kitchen. It's much more durable than regular grout and never stains. The mixing isn't a big deal, it's how fast it sets up, you have to work fast and you don't want to leave any residue because it'll never come off.

You're right mate. It's not as easy as he's making it out to be. He's setting some up for failure saying it's easy. This is epoxy. When things go wrong, the can really go wrong. But if you have systems in place and work in smaller batches - that is, reducing the amounts used by dividing each of the components into appropriate amounts, it's fine. The problem is, if you're a novice, it's all a bit of a headache. Here's a tip. Watch you don't get a spot of epoxy on your shoe, or your clothes or you will take it to other parts of the house and it's not easy to get off your wifes expensive lounge suite or carpet. This gear is messy.
