I hate grouting, but one trap a beginner shouldn't fall into is to try and do too much in one go. If you are not a professional or don't have a second person to help, only mix half a bag of grout and do just one wall at a time. Sure, you can grout 2 or 3 walls in 30 minutes but that first wall will soon start to require some serious hard work with the sponge to remove the excess grout - and its a workout for the arms! Tiles with any sort of texture or grooved effect are also harder work. Better to mix half a bag or less, do a wall, wait for the grout to start setting a little and then start sponging it. In warm weather the grout will dry on the wall even quicker. I am not a professional, but I have done a few bathrooms and floor tiling and I wish I'd followed my own advice on the last one I did. You can make your grouting life a lot easier by not rushing putting the tiles on the wall in the first place - make sure your gaps between the tiles are not full of adhesive.

He's alot better then my maintenance guy!! He did a very poor job. Left dirt stains all in the cracks!!! I just think He's fkn lazy and sorry because it's a job!!!

Agreed so much. All those How-To's that are simply perfect arent giving the job's justice and aint helping that much. Seeing how to fix issues that happened even to the bests in the trade gives me confidance lol

Never grout corners they will crack with movement in the walls. Always use latex caulk or silicone in the corners.

Much respect to all tile layers. I've done a few floors and a few showers over the years and it is not my cup of tea. Even after working a few times with a master tile installer who's been doing it for close to 30 years 12 hours a day and for a lot of top class 5 star luxury buildings. Hes a master at his craft. Even with some of his inside knowledge, tips, and tricks from him I was still never able to get 100% comfortable with it. The whole process and how tideous it is and me being a excavator, concrete work, sewer, and water lines, I doubt really have the patience required for tile work.

I'm watching Jeff's videos to refresh my DIYer tile skills and I just wondered the same thing, but he's not the only professional I've seen use grout in changes of plane. I just got done reading other online forums that say never use grout at change of plane. That's the reason Mapei makes color matched 100% silicone caulking to compliment their grout.

....mixing at high speeds also aerates the grout mixture. Bubbles in the grout weakens the end result and can cause small cracks or defects etc

You never want to grout corners! Wall movement always occurs and it will crack. Silicone it!

That depends on a remodel or if it’s an official build. If a remodel you grout the corners (unless it doesn’t hold)

Should have been removing that glue when you layed the tile, also why did you push grout in the corner joint, it will crack, should be left clean for silicone. Walls move.

I just finished tiling my shower with 12×24 tiles but noticed that there is a gap at the top where the tile meets the roof. It's too small for a tile placement and too big to caulk. What is your suggestion on how to solve for this?

I’m in the middle of my bathroom renovation and I’m just about ready to grout. I wanted to ask before I start what your view is on the Mapei ultracolor (powder) vs the flexcolor (pre-mixed). Are there any real advantages choosing one over the other?

Hi Steven, the premixed is incredibly expensive but designed for people who don't want to buy mixing equipment. if you have a drill buy a small mixing blade and get the ultracolor.

Mr. Jeff, I consider myself to be pretty decent with home repair stuff. When it came down to doing my kitchen backsplash tile, I had no idea how wrong my initial idea of how I was going to tackle everything was. This is insane. I had NO idea this was how to do grout. Great video but I did not notice the unsanded part. Decided to do the kitchen backsplash tile in our kitchen 2 walls about 30SF. Tile store gave me sanded grout which was a MAJOR workout with 1/8" joints - obviously I should've used unsanded. I finished one wall (thanksfully the shorter one) with what I had. The other wall is twice as long so I really don't want to continue with sanded - is it weird to switch to unsanded for the other wall?

It has a different consistency and a slightly different surface appearance, but it’s definitely doable. I’d etch the corner where the unsanded will meet the sanded and cover that entire wall and corner with the new, unsanded grout. And you’re right; covering and cleaning entire walls with sanded grout is a major undertaking. Good luck!

Oh good catch. This video is 4 years old. The other video where he said to grout center and caulk corners/outside was made within the last couple months. At least that’s the one I saw. So I would say go with the advice on the newer video. He’s probably learned new things and it’d be difficult to go back and change every detailed advice he’s been given.

unsanded is designed for small spaces and usually used on walls and with materials that scratch like glass and marble. sanded was traditionally used on floors which had a wider grout space. now they make a hybrid so you can use an unsanded on the floor and it has a polymer to keep the grout string and not crack. The old sanded grout is stronger than unsanded. Cheers!

I’m using a mocha color and thought I wasn’t mixing it thoroughly because of the darn red streaks! Just like I learned about air pockets on your other grouting vid (the one with the black and white hexagon-shaped bathroom tile), I have definitely been mixing way too fast and long. I’m on my last leg of the job, hopefully it’ll go easier and smoother now that I know why my paste sucks... 😝

Jeff - I was able to complete my tile backsplash this past weekend thanks largely to your videos - MANY THANKS, I am now a subscriber! Could you comment on a couple of things regarding grout? First I hand-mixed my unsanded grout and noticed some red streaks showing up as I was applying it - was that a result of me NOT mixing it well enough? I can't imagine that I could have separated the molecules like you mentioned in the video with my stick by hand...I did two batches of grout mixing on the job, and spent more time mixing the second batch but it didn't seem to make a difference. Second, the tannish/grey grout dried several shades lighter than we expected. Was this related to the unmixed pigment issue, or is that normal? So now are there any GOOD options to darkening this color (I am NOT digging it back out, lol). I have not yet applied a sealer. Thanks again, Matt

Home RenoVision DIY I just picked up a bag of the Mapei Keracolor S SANDED Grout to use with a mosaic tile backsplash that I installed above the shower. The bag says that it’s suited for mosaics, but I saw another comment where you said that it could scratch glazed surfaces. Would it be best for me to exchange what I have for the UNsanded version?

mosaic can mean a bunch of things. I would suggest using the non sanded grout. unless your grout space is over 1/4 of an inch. Cheers!

Firstly, my boyfriend and I managed to renovate our entire bathroom down to the studs with help from your videos, thanks so much! Second, we are having a hard time finding information on how to get a true black grout, apparently it is nonexistent. Any brands or tricks you know on how to achieve this?

Try adding black oxide to the grout. It's available at larger hardware stores and is normally marketed as a cement additive. I've had success using it with grout, as essentially, grout is portland cement and graded sand . sanded is for larger gaps and traditionally on the floor. unsanded is for small gaps and glass tile and marble. Cheers!

My husband and i have made a very large bathroom and two very large terraces in tiles - i strongly will advice people against your way of grouting, because it will be very difficult to wash off, and once it is set it will be next to impossible to remove it. I do with a shpatel in each seem - thus u have less to wash off. The same amount of work but less afterwards to wash off

We are in the process of tiling our shower and took his advice to grout in the corners. However now we are about to start the next step of sealing the grout and caulking the corners, does anybody know if I should seal all the grout first or caulk first? I haven't found a video where he mentions grouting the corners and also the sealing/finishing process.

Thanks for the tips. I just grouted my bathroom floor tiles and will seal them. Going to do the shower tiles next as the person who did them never sealed them after so there is grout discolouration.

Hi Jeff, thank you so much for your help, I am renovating my bathroom and I am planning to tile my bathtub walls with small Marble Carrara tile. I saw in the showroom of Floor and Decor a small sample wall with the same marble tile installed without grout in between (no spacers), they still add grout on the top of the finished walls. I really liked the final result, however I am not sure if is the right way to do it, they say it is ok and it should not leak but I have my doubts. Do you have any suggestion? should I proceed with the tiling. Thank you in advanced for your advise.

Yup. Easy to do. Lots of good videos on RU-vid for tutorials. Spring for the better quality/longer lasting sealer. It’s not a hard job to do but you’ll be thankful not to have to do it so often.

I would suggest ultracolor by mapei. it is an unsanded grout with polymer and works up to 1/2". But your tiler should know that already!

I highly recommend wearing rubber gloves. Moreso if you have any cuts on your hand or you you are a habitual nail biter. I thought the mild tingly burning sensation was all in my head. As I kept on working, the pain became more and more intense. Looked at my hands, which were covered in grout because I had to use my hands to force some grout in some rather tight spots behind some pipework that wouldn't fit my float. Burned some skin off the tips.

When I read the instructions on the grout container, they said to wear gloves due to The grout containing caustic materials that are damaging to skin.

I've read to only use non sanded grout on joints 1/8 or less. I have a glass tiles shower with 3/16 joints. Would I be ok to use non sanded or would sanded be the best choice? Thanks

Don't have black tile because it will ALWAYS look dirty. That's my recommendation. Black tile in your shower*

I’m working on a stall shower. Tiled with ceramic. The previous owner caulked over either thinnest or the grout on the lower area where the tile wall meets the plastic tray floor. It took hours to remove it all. Can I just use the polyblend grout to seal the corners and lower wall to plastic tray floor area?

Yes but if there is any major temperature change the grout will crack out. I suggest a little clear silicone to finish.

when you use a continuous substrate such as a waterproofing membrane there is almost no movement in the joint.The grout will probably never crack . We use silicone to help ensure this.

Thank you for the video - Just want to confirm - If you have a fully waterproof shower system you can use an unsanded grout? Does the size of the joint spacing matter in a waterproof shower in regards to using sanded or unsanded grout? Thank you!

@@skilo81 Old installer here. You can get matching caulking for most reputable grout companies' grout. (TEC is my favorite brand for tiling products with the exception of Red Guard for waterproofing. ) 1/8" or less grout line you use unwanted grout. 1/8" or more use wanted grout. Sanded is stronger so if 1/8" I like to use wanted even though either will work. If the tile is soft enough to scratch easily you don't want sand though so test it! I always recommend TEC PowerGrout which is applied to all grout line sizes and only comes one way. If it has sand in it it's so fine you can't tell. But it's been great every time I've used it. I always caulk the corners with matching caulk so it won't have cracking problems. I HATE silicone. If you ever try to recall anything that had silicone you will see why!

Amazing work mate.just one question i live in a very tropical climate area lots of rain lots of heat , winters are unforgiving i tiled my house's elevation with a 5 mm spacers in between i really dont want to grout them for aesthetic purposes is that a good idea?

So we used Unsanded grout in our shower, the exact same one you're using in this video. Do we still need to seal it?

Hi Cindy, we seal the grout if we want to protect the color or if you have not used a waterproofing system. The good news is that most water based sealers can be applied with a sponge and just wipe off the excess from the tile. Cheers!

Around 20 min after, but it also depends if it is warm or not. There will be times you will have to wash it off pretty quick because it dries to fast.

How long do you wait to wipe and clean after putting grout on?

It can really depend on how thick the mixture of grout is from the beginning. The consistency they showed in the video is like watery peanut butter and you'd likely have to wait 30-40 minutes for it to dry. If you mix less water/more grout the consistency can be dry and firm enough to clean off right away without risk of taking extra grout out of the lines. Otherwise, 30-40 minutes of waiting and sometimes even up to an hour depending on what/where you grouted before its even close to ready to be cleaned off. Ultimately it comes down to how thick it was at the beginning and how much pressure you apply to the paddle/sponge on application and cleanoff.

Hey you do a great job man, quick question can I use non sanded grout on the tile surround!!!? And I wanna repair my grout lines some are missing grout would I be able to do it with pre mixed grout!?
