Great instruction. I'm going to finally be tiling my bath remodel in the next few weeks, with tile on everything but the ceiling. This video was perfect timing for me. I went back and watched the other grouting video you did earlier as well. Both of these videos I think are going to make my grouting go much more smoothly and get me a better result. How come the Americans always use Caulk? My last plumber asked if our bath had been sealed with silicone or caulk when I wanted the bath resealed & was relieved when I said silicone, because caulk dries & cracks like ol billyo he said. Nightmare to remove as well.
You didn't mention where you are located, but it seems like we have a language barrier. "Caulk" is just a generic word for "sealant." So, there are silicone caulks, acrylic latex caulks, butyl-rubber caulks, sanded caulks, etc. In showers and tubs a silicone caulk is the appropriate choice. They also make sanded caulks meant to match sanded grout, but I don't recommend those due to lack of durability.
I have a larger space in the corners of my shower wall. I am leaning toward caulking it, but I am worried it will look bad since the caulk is smooth and glossy, but the grout is sanded. This is my first time grouting, and I am worried the grout will crack in the corners. What is recommended?
Generally caulking is preferred, unless you are confident that you have beefed up the framing underneath to a degree that movement will be minimal. They do make sanded caulks, but I have found that they do not last long. For durability, a silicone caulk is best. Grouting. A job I tried just once. Hated it. Now I see I made it way too hard. It's not so scary after all. I think I can tackle some touch up work on a contractor's 'not quite up to snuff' grouting on new shower tile that we had done 4 years ago. Clearly the right sponge makes a difference. I'll definitely have to go back and watch your other video before I start that project.
You nailed the problem--people make it too hard and get scared off. It's really not that difficult if you have the right tools, understand the technique, and have a little patience.
That's actually the dividing line. Typically that's about as large as you can go with an unsanded grout. Some sanded grouts are okay down to 1/8" some are not. There is a product made by Mapei which is supposed to replace sanded and unsanded grouts regardless of the situation but I'm not a big fan of how it works into the joints or how it looks cured.
Great video! .... for shoes, I use Crocs. They have no tread, slip off if I need to leave the space and don't want to track grout around the house, and hose off easily

Lowes is now selling Mapei brand grout, which is a solid brand with a long history. The "utracolor" label is on all of their grouts. However, there is one particular type called "Plus FA" which is meant to replace both sanded and unsanded grouts, and that has a poor reputation. If you stick with the standard Mapie sanded or unsanded grouts you''ll be fine.
Really love the way you cut the tiles. Wish my tile guy did this. I think I can grout my on tile now but still unsure of how to mix the grout. I think I'll just buy ready made grout at Lowes.
Don't use the premixed grout--it's not even grout. Chemically it's closer to a thick paint than actual grout. Buy the dry mix, and use a sanded grout if your joints are 1/8" or larger. Mix the grout with water slowly, and sneak up on the consistency. Little by little. Ultimately you want the consistency of mayonnaise or peanut butter. Mix enough for one wall and then add more later as you need it.
@@enduringcharm sounds goods. I'm not a carpenter and I'm a female so I'm trying to do the things myself to save money. I going to paint the interior of my house walls and trim. I had one of these ventless heaters and just about ruined my windows with moisture. Someone needs to sue these companies that make these because I had mold on my walks behind my bed even got in my night stand. I got rid of it and put a vented gas heater. Plus they stink up your house with fumes and you definitely need a carbon monoxide detector. Read where a couple died died in their sleep from a ventless heater. I was going to sue them but broke my phone and Walmart lost all my pictures I took changing over to my new phone. I had pictures of mold in my kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. I hope people read this and never put ventless heaters in their homes. If they do be sure to size them right to your rooms and get a dehumidifier to get gallons of moisture out of your house. 😳
The color match caulk is not quite the same as the sanded grout. When used in the gap between the tub or pan and the tile it's necessary and it's not as noticeable. For the edge of the bullnose it's more noticeable and since it is silicone based it is not paintable. So you could never repaint that edge in the future without issues.
This answered my question on why there is always a pipe sticking out of the shower head area in tiling videos. Just wanted to confirm it's actually a temporary piece. Thanks.
Funny you mention that--since I have my plumber subcontractor handle the plumbing tasks, I end up with a pile of those pipe stubs at the end of a year! I keep meaning to give them back to him, but I always forget.
Epoxy grout is very different and each manufacturer has it's own installation guidelines you need to follow. In general I work in smaller sections when using epoxy grout and I may or may not use a sponge depending on the manufacturer's directions. I'm really not a fan of the stuff because it makes it more difficult or even impossible to regrout at a later date and much of it has a plastic appearance.
Great job, I do have a question about possibility of water getting trapped between say red gard liquid membrane that I applied and then filling the gap at the shower base acrylic in my case with 100% silicon caulk. would that not allow any water that could possiby seep through the grout or tile? then just be trapped in there? thanks
@@enduringcharm Hi John, I watched that video , and I also put the flashing on as you did, Then I used fiber mesh made for thinset and I applied thinset to make that lip area even pers say. then my waterproofing is red gard, so I then painted the red gard all over the cement board etc.. I have my tile on now and I have an 1/8" gap under tiles at shower pan. I was just thinking if I put silicon in that gap and water leaks through the grout would there be water trapped in between the tile and the red gard since there is silicon at the bottom so nothing will run down the waterproofing and out to the tub/pan etc.. or I guess not that much water would seep through grout ?
There really shouldn't be water seeping through grout lines, especially if the grout is sealed. At worst, some moisture will get through if there are a series of long showers.
Thanks for the video! Do you happen to recall the color grout you used? I love how it came out. I can see the caulk was warm grey but the grout looks like maybe it was lighter?
I'm sorry, I don't recall the color. Typically I try to use a color that blends with the tile color and often the displays at the box stores will have a reference to a grout color for each tile. Other times people want a contrasting color, but that is less common. As for the caulk, I try to color match with the grout. However, I've also had some quality problems with the caulk made by the grout manufacturers themselves. The color may be exactly right but the durability of the caulk is not as good. So, if I can buy a generic pure silicone caulk which is very close to the grout color I may do that instead. I can't remember which I did in this case. It's also worth noting that the caulk and grout have a different sheen to them, so they may appear slightly different even though the actual color is identical.
All standard grouts can benefit by being sealed. However, that protection is limited to stains and to a degree the amount of water which is absorbed in a shower or other exposure to water. It doesn't protect much against physical dirt, if you will. You can still get soap scum, or particles of other materials embedded in the grout even if it is sealed.
