I live in Florida and we have like 4 different types of fire ants on our property. I have a fire ant guy that comes and treats my property every 4 months but not around my garden. I use containers to garden as I am older and have arthritis and some mobility issues with my ankles and knees anymore. But I find those ants hate the smell of cinnamon. So I buy large containers of cinnamon and sprinkle on top of my containers and the ants stay out of them.

Never get tired of fresh green beans, they can be cooked so many good ways. Favs are teriyaki and bacon n onion. I want to try those dragon beans. Also asparagus beans. Biggest problem I’ve had here in south Florida is the hot wind, just general high heat, and the little containers dry out fast. You have a wonderful back yard. To work with the hot winds, and sun scald you can buy a sheer woven sun cloth that you drape and secure to posts with clamps over your rows or patch. This lets in rain and plenty of sun, but minimizes any damage. There is a darker version if you want to maintain the HEAT in your rows to extend the growing season, of lettuces or second broccoli growth, or even tomatoes. Beans will continue to flower if adequate light and warmth is provided, so more beans to eat! Keep watered and work in a small handful of fertilizer (for flowers n vegetables) around each.

I loved this video. This is the first year of my life and I'm 63, that I've had a run in with fungus knits, uggg. Thanks for your input about the cinnamon. My hubby wanted to buy chemicals to get rid of them, I'm not into that stuff. I also didn't realize you could grow so many bean plants together in such small a area. I can't wait to get started. Wish I was in your location, I'm in Kansas and it's late February, I'm so ready to get my garden going, my little green house is over flowing. Until next time, happy growing.
@macylouwho1187
@macylouwho1187 3 месяца назад
You can use a food container with small holes poked all over the top to get rid of fungus gnats. I use half warm water/half apple cider vinegar with a drop of dawn dish soap to break surface tension so they fall in and drown in the water/vinegar combo. They are super attracted to apple cider vinegar. I put a pinch of sugar or honey in if I really want to get them coming in quick to the trap. After they thin out, I dump it and rinse it for the inevitable surge of the next round of hatched gnats coming out of the soil. When that happens, I repeat the process. That usually gets rid of the whole batch of them and the problem is over. Cinnamon never worked for me in the house, apple cider vinegar worked far better and faster.

Beans are self-pollinating and pollination usually happens even before the blossom opens. So they are less likely to cross-pollinate even when growing close to each other. However, to be on the safe side, try to plant different varieties of beans at least 10 feet from one another if you are saving bean seeds. This is straight from Google. I believe we should be safe to save seeds from plants planted near each other. Because there is no way I could put 10ft between each variety lol. Hope that helps plus I needed to know for myself.

It was 89° here today and it’s still officially winter. Spring is official in 2 days though. 😜 I hate trying to grow anything that trails in containers. So this is great to know about the beans. I missed out on the stackable pots. They never keep enough stock in of what everyone wants. I see some halfway decent priced ones on Amazon, so I may order those. I hate those fungus gnats. Last year I got a lot of them. This year I did a ton of research to try and keep from getting them. I switched to Happy Frog potting soil and switched to coco coir to grow my seedlings in. So far, so good.

If you haven't tried them before, I think you may well like Red Swan beans too. They are prolific, pretty, and very tasty. They'll keep producing for ages. I usually grow Blue Lake as my climbing bean, and I've tried many others as bush beans, but that Red Swan beat them all last year. They also froze very well too.

I pulled outside all my tiny plant starts and now there are 1,000 mile per hour winds here in NV. They knocked over so many things when I wasn’t home and before I planted. Tons of strawberry casualties. I want to cry, but I will NOT be discouraged. I hope you didn’t get our horrendous winds. Ugh. Happy gardening everyone!
@TeamBensonHomestead
@TeamBensonHomestead 3 года назад
Ohhhh nooo. We got some wind I have to cut a few broken tomatoe vines but that was about it. And you got this keep going, when I first started my channel a hail storm ruined my entire garden. I didn't post for like a month because I was so upset. But everyone was like just baby the plants and they will come back. And some of them did to my surprise.

@@sandinmaheye1 I ordered them a couple of months ago from Dollar Tree online. They were $1 each then. Now everything is $1.25 each. You have to order a case of 36 at a time. But it will be worth it.
