There is no reason not to grow strawberries! They’re my favorite VEGETABLE... I got 80 bare roots for $25 on amazon and they’re doing great! Now I’m at the point where I’m using some of my strawberry plants to creat runners.

The song made me cry (because of the painful situation I'm going through) but you may have helped me save my strawberry plants that I moved inside. I covered around them more, and they started to really die out. Looks like I buried them too deep. So, I cleared out dirt from their crowns, and hopefully they will come back. 🤞🤞🤞

Mykos must be the magic ingredient. I just started watching strawberry videos and this is the first time I saw it mentioned. My raspberries are great this year so I am going to focus on strawberry’s next year next to it. They have never done well in my garden. Thank you for your channel.

Hi James that was a great tip, creating a little mound in the planting hole. I covered all my strawberry plants in wood chip a month ago like Paul Gautschi recommended , they have all popped up from under the wood chip looking lushes and green with many flower buds. My soil is sandy like yours, I rely on the many oak trees I have to provide me with a rich source of carbon, Thank you James.

Thanks James I have also learnt a lot from your video, one cannot ignore how bountiful and lush your fruit trees and vegetable has been. I have 2 permaculture certificate and a horticultural certificate but still have room to learn more from others practical experience. Like you once said we learn from each other. I have just planted 5 asparagus crown around the root area of my peach tree because I saw how successful yours were. I am planting strawberries around my apple trees as a ground cover. I will be posting pictures of my success or failure on face book. This morning I posted a video of my ducks foraging for slugs.

Love strawberries! Wood chips will compost over time and build organic material that plants love. “Strawberry plants can be directly covered over with wood chips after they are spent for the season. In the spring the new green will pop through while the old will compost creating energy.” Paul Gautschi. Great video!

I can’t even tell you how much I appreciate this video! Step by step is exactly what I need. I do have one question.....when you plant your strawberry plants, can I use another type of fertilizer? My green thumb Mother-in-law used to sprinkle a little bit of Miracle Gro in a circle around each plant about 2-3” from them. I love all your videos, but this one in particular.

I got some bare root and planted them just recently, maybe 2 days ago im worried they wont grow cuz the little nubs had no sign of life, the crown was hard but it didnt have anything sprouting out from it like a lot of the bare root you see in videos that already have tiny sprouts. The package had soil in with them that was pretty moist but not too wet...

Hi James! I wish I had seen this video before I planted my strawberries :-) But it's alright, I got them in over a week ago. I didn't spread out the roots like you showed but thankfully most of them seem to be doing well and some are already flowering too. I see that I have a lot of videos to catch up on now - you've been posting like mad! That is awesome, can't wait to watch them all. I've been busy myself, doing a lot of work in the garden finally. I'm so excited - this is my first real year growing things. The raspberries are going crazy, seems like there will be a good harvest.

Great video - thanks for sharing! Here in the Pacific Northwest we have two native strawberries. One is the coastal strawberry and the other is the woodland strawberry. The coastal does really well in poor well drained soils (think sandy coastal soils) - this type is also very drought tolerant. I use this on the south side of a hugel bed I built as a hedgerow in an old gravel parking lot along a dirt road. They have spread amazingly well and I have transplanted a bunch of the runner plants to my new hugel bed. I did pick off all the flowers last year (their first year) to encourage them to spread and not spend energy on fruiting but this year I'm going to let them flower so I can get some fruits. The woodland strawberry prefers partial shade or full shade and naturally grows in forests. I'm waiting for my new food forest to get a canopy developed and then I plan to plant these to get a good crop in the shade. It is not as drought tolerant as the coastal strawberry but will do fine in a more established food forest. Both of these strawberries produce smaller fruits than the cultivated varieties. But the coastal strawberry's fruits are actually much sweeter than the cultivated varieties. The woodland strawberry is sweet but not as sweet - I still like it and since it handles full shade it fills a niche that other strawberries won't. The alpine strawberry you mentioned James is similar to these two varieties but is found wild in higher and colder climates. I have a couple of these plants that I got for free - I like them okay but the coastal is so far my favorite since it is super sweet and spreads really well. I have also found that it roots through thick mulch without any trouble. Thanks again for sharing - always enjoy watching your videos and I'm very impressed by your food forests. I'm going to be launching a blog soon showing what I'm doing on my place and a lot of it has been inspired by your videos. I built a fence along the front of my property using the same technique you highlighted in an earlier video. As a restoration ecologist I tend to focus a bit more on native plants but I still plant a ton of food producing non-native plants - I just mix natives in where I can :) Plus, at least in the Pacific Northwest we have a ton of great edible native plants.

Hey James, We have a question about pests on your strawberries and want to tell you how you have inspired us. We have a 4 x 4 fire pit ring that I first started with that grows lots of strawberries, but the ants, mini slugs, and small snails eat holes in all of them before I can get to them. Since we watched this video we bought 50 jewel strawberry bare roots crowns and I prepared a huge garden for them using your food forest chip method. I just don't want my hard work going to these bugs. Do you have any advice in keeping these pests from eating them? We have been watching all your videos because we are starting a food forest also. We are 2 years in. You have inspired us in many ways with your videos including the tomatoes on the strings method. I built a 3 run 7 ft high, 50 foot tomato arbor based on your instructions also. There are 72 indeterminate tomatoes in there. We now have 22 fruit trees (plum, peach, apple, pear, apricot, etc.), 100 everbearing raspberries, choke berries, goose berries, black berries, 40 asparagus, and blueberry bushes. We also hit the jackpot on wood chips where a local arborist has a wood chip landfill that he gave us access to get as manly truckloads of chips as we want. Thank you for your advice in finding arborists. We are off to a good start and we want to thank you very much for your guidance. We don't have a Tuck, but we do have a Glock :D. He is our Saint Bernard. Unlike Tuck, Glock can make a mess of a garden in no time. LOL. Thank you for your help in advance in regards the strawberry pests.

I just watched a BUNCH of your videos and I wanted to ask if there was a reason you explained earlier that you aren't using compost tea sprays on your fruit trees. Im in an area where bees spread fireblight and that was the only thing that really seemed to help, and if you spray your trees once a week or so it'll probably colonize them with enough beneficial fungi and bacteria that the scab won't be a problem on your apples anymore! It worked pretty well for me at my old place (zone 8a and alterntaing humid and drought, so stressed plants). If you have a reason for not making compost teas, though, I'd love to hear it!

Wonderful, I just can’t get enough of your videos, I’m learning so much. Quick question, I bought the Mykos inoculant and put some straight into the root, the. I had this ‘genius’ idea of pooring some water so that the Mykos would stick to the roots and this smoke came out of it. Thoughts?

The Gardening Channel With James Prigioni What would you like to trade? I have a 30 + year old Hoya I could send you a cutting from ( inside plant in the north ), birch trees you would need a few but you could tap like maple trees for syrup, quaking aspen. Here we have high-bush and low-bush cranberries. The low bush ones are maybe 8” are are like the cranberries in the store but smaller. Those would have to be berries that are dried for seed - actually all the berries. The high bush have sort of heart shaped seeds and the plant and berries sort of have a musky odor but makes great jelly and supposed to be good medicinally. You would have to google that. We also have service berries and they are more like a sapling whose berries grow in clusters together. It’s known as June berry or trail berry. It has a lot of protein and is good to mix with blueberries for pie. I have several native blueberry plants and red currants but the last few years the moose beat me to it. I found some wild strawberries that are small, pinkish-white and very sweet when they are ripe. I would have to drive a ways to find the and get them when they are ripe. Would like to have some of those seeds myself. The wild blueberries of which there are several varieties, do not transplant well. Some have had success by sowing seeds in sandy soil and moving them to their permanent spot. I doubt cloud berries would grow in your garden as they seem to prefer marshy areas like tundra. Oh I do have honeyberries and they do quite well I have not tried grafting them but want to try and see if that will work for propagation as they have a woody stem. Let me know what you would like in trade. Berries can be sent sooner - well some - I will have to take inventory of what’s in the freezer.
