Knowing how to grow rhubarb is very rewarding.
Rhubarb is one of my favourite plants in my grow-your-own area. I remember my mum and dad growing them when we were kids, often making rhubarb crumble with them. The flavour was amazing because you've got that almost acidic sharpness, and with the sugar, you had the sweetness as well.
Rhubarb is also one of the easiest edible plants to grow. It’s frost-resistant, doesn’t need much care and attention, and can be grown from seed, dormant crown, or from pot-grown rhubarb.
Here is my quick guide to growing and harvesting rhubarb.

Thanks. Growing rhubarb for the first time. My small plant that I bought a couple of months ago is booming. We had rhubarb in the garden when I was a kid back in the 70's. Great pies.

Fantastic information and a quality presentation! I just moved to a house up in northern Minnesota that already has an established rhubarb plant that was regularly harvested my wife's grandmother for decades. It's starting to sprout up now up so I was looking up information about how to go about harvesting it and your video hit the spot! I could really feel your passion for this plant! Your channel subscribers are going to shoot through the roof if you keep videos as good as this one! 👍🏻

Love your video! I'm planting an apple tree and thought of planting the rhubarb around it. Hopefully it works well together. I wanted to see this video as a friend was kind enough to share her rhubarb with me. she said hers are huge. I'm wondering now how mine will be as although I'm in the same state it is code in Northern Minnesota than Central. We'll see.

I recommend a rhubarb drink. Around 500g rhubarb, water to cover the rhubarb, 1 or 2 cinnamon stick, 1 star anise. Let that simmer til the rhubarb is very soft. Filter it so you have a red liquid. If you want a sour drink you can leave it as that, but I recommend adding 250g sugar at max I like 120g

I had to move my Rhubarb plants to raised beds due to suffering from Crown Rot due to our heavy clay soil. I moved each plant to a fire ring raised bed, which lifts them off the ground by one foot. They are doing great in their raised beds.

David, may I please ask which variety you're growing, since it seems quite neat and compact? Victoria seems to become too enormous for the pot and position I have available - in semi-shade on an east facing balcony) - and you mentioned Timpany being good for forcing early growth, or, at the end of the season. Which of these would you recommend, or do you perhaps know of another which would be best to begin with?

Hi David. I started rhubarb plants from seed back in October of 2020. By April 2021, they looked really tiny and limp and I threw most of them into the trash because I didn't think they were going to grow any bigger. My husband saw me throwing them out and decided to take a couple of them and just stick it into a raised bed planter that we have in the front of our house. They began growing like crazy. It's now August and one of them is huge and the other is small but strong. We are almost done building a new house and we don't want to leave the rhubarb plants here. Am I able to move it to the new location right now without harming the plants? Your guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi David, thank you so much for this Video. 🌻 I was wondering, you did not say that rhubarb can also be had by dividing a plant, dont you do that in the UK? In germany we divide older plants. For one they get to big and also you get a better harvest. I will get one later on this year from a friend, After I move in a new garden. Thanks again, take care and stay safe. 🌻

You should try making a true southern US strawberry rhubarb pie. It is my favorite pie. Tart and sweet.
@amywalker7515
@amywalker7515 2 года назад
Originally a rhubarb pie did not contain any strawberries. It was called "Strawberry Rhubarb" because of the color of it. I think it's downright sacrireligious to put strawberries into a rhubarb pie. It's got such a sweet/zingy flavor.

Any self respecting southerner would never mix strawberries in their rhuba’b pie! My long dead uncle loved rhubarb pie…..and gooseberry pie….he’d say, they’ll sharpen your teeth! The taste of both is quite similar.

When do you stop pulling rhubarb and how do you take care of it over the winter
@daviddomoney
@daviddomoney Год назад
Harvest no later than late summer in the UK (July/August). If it's the crown's first year, don't harvest until year two and even then only lightly. You want the crown to get very strong. For winter care, I would allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn, remove the old leaves to expose the growing points to winter cold. This helps harden the crown to the UK climate.

When planting, make sure you get the crown at the proper height level in the soil. Buying a plant in a pot makes this much easier than buying a bare root. My rhubarb struggles in our hot Maryland climate.

We've got a rhubarb that's like a family heirloom. It goes back to at least the 50s and it's still growing strong. Perhaps it's just the clump that has lasted and not the original plant? Who knows. But we don't let it go to seed and don't divide and replace in situ. We've taken divisions to plant elsewhere. It's in the cottage my great grandmother lived in, and the plant could go back another 50 years for all we know.

I purchased two roots from HD this past weekend. Western Oregon is a fine zone for prolific and delicious rhubarb sauce to accompany vanilla ice cream. Why they invented ice cream? Rhubarb sauce! Loads of sugar to taste, 2 cinnamon sticks, dash of lemon rind, simmer until saucy, about 45 mins., begin with 3/4" cubes. A naughty breakfast too...
