A complete guide on how to grow rhubarb, including reasons to grow rhubarb, an introduction to rhubarb varieties, how to plant rhubarb and care for rhubarb, including forcing rhubarb, and how to harvest rhubarb together with some ideas for eating.
Rhubarb is a herbaceous perennial plant, which means that once planted it comes back year after year. With luck, each year after planting, a rhubarb plant will come back larger and provide more stems.
I find that 6-8 stems are usually enough to make a family of four sized crumble, or a bowl of compote to store in the fridge. Through the harvesting season, a mature plant can produce enough stems to provide several harvests of this size every month.
I think one of the joys of growing rhubarb is that once established, the plants provide a reliable harvest whilst requiring little care.
The video is divided into the following chapters:
00:00 Introduction
01:01 Why Grow Rhubarb?
02:39 Rhubarb Varieties
03:42 When To Plant Rhubarb
04:37 How To Plant Rhubarb?
06:02 How To Care For Rhubarb
07:59 Forcing Rhubarb
08:52 Rhubarb Flowers
09:18 How To Harvest Rhubarb

I live in Canada where the spring is quite a bit later than yours. My friend has been growing rhubarb but ii is languishing. It was transplanted the fall of 2022 and it wasn't allowed to grow without harvest. That is probably the biggest issue we have. Maybe I will start a plant in a pot and allow it to grow without disturbance for this year, though it will have started growing when I put it in the pot. Gardening sure requires patience sometimes!! Not always easy when the desired plant is a favourite to eat. Thank you so much for your insights and directions. Clear and concise! All the best to you!

I like your video, Liam. Thank you for sharing. My rhubarb is from an old variety which is, small but very flavorful, and it is likely a cultivar put in place on our family farm about 200 years ago. Glad to preserve this botanical treasure. 😊😊

I really liked your video. I planted 2 young crowns in mid spring, theyre both growing well. I love rhubarb too...I want compote and pies. I dont understand why no one out there makes or sells plain rhubarb pies. They always add strawberries and I do NOT enjoy that at all. So, I'll make my own. :) I learned alot from this video, so glad I watched it. listening to you explain everything was enjoyable, calming, clear and concise. Thankyou.

I started my Rhubarb from seed last winter without knowing anything about it. I was frustrated by the yield and chucked the root (now I know it’s a rhizome) into the compost. I was amazed to see it popping up out of the compost bin mid/later winter. It really is an interesting plant. I recovered it from the heap and now it’s really taking off 😉

That’s great, sounds like the plant matured in the compost bin! It grows well in really rich conditions.

Thank you. My year 2 rhubarb flowered, I cut the stalk, it grew and flowered again. I will now pull the flowered stalk harvest style. I invested in 2 good quality crowns, just in case. They are both beautiful. I will move one a little later this year. Fascinating plants!

Very informative video. Thank you for all the details. I didn't realize you could harvest every month. Mine went to flower and looks like it is more than one plant. I'll divide it in the fall since I've missed the early spring date. It's way too hot. Thanks for posting.

I had no idea about growing Rhubarb or that the season had already began, so early. In a way, it is very similar to Asparagus. Thankyou fo all this information. The UK is not quite the same as a Vor-Alpine climate.

I’ve been making rhubarb and strawberry overnight oats the last few weeks - love it!! When I stew down my rhubarb I strain off and further reduce the syrupy liquid (for anyone new to cooking with rhubarb add 1-2cups of water, 1/2-1cup sugar and a few stems of chopped rhubarb to pan and simmer gently until softened) then allow the drained rhubarb and syrup to cool completely then store in the fridge 👍🏼 For my oats I use a recycled takeaway container - Add the oats, some natural yogurt, a dash of milk then chopped strawberries, a good dollop of rhubarb and then mix together, sprinkle a couple of white chocolate chips on top for a treat and a drizzle of the reduced rhubrb syrup, leave over night in the fridge and enjoy the next day! 🙌🏼 deeelish! 😊 And thanks for the video!! 🙌🏼

Hello. Really enjoyed this video. I grew 20 rhubarb plants from seed last April and planted them out in early September. I dug well aged cow manure compost, chicken pellets and bone meal into the bed before planting and then added a thick layer of compost as a mulch. They continued to grow well before the cold hit. This spring all the plants came through and many of them produced flower stalks which I took out as soon as I noticed them. I've taken a few leaves up until now from only the stronger, bigger plants. Every couple of weeks they received 5 or 6 handfuls of chicken manure pellets sprinkled around the base and gently worked into the compost mulch. They've been watered well during dryer weeks. Recently the leaves have lost that deep green colouration and have turned more of a lime green colour. I thought I was giving them everything they required to grow well with the chicken pellets but they seem to be lacking. I'm trying to grow them using natural fertilizers so do you have any recommendations as what to do or use? Thank you, all the best.

Thank you very much for your comment. A couple of thoughts, I mulch once a year rather than ongoing, perhaps too many nutrients? Also, the ground should be moist rather than too wet. I rarely water at this time of year.

Thank you for the quick reply! I have sandy soil and nutrients wash through it quite quickly, hence the regular feeds. I'll cut back on feeding and see what happens... Thanks again.

Hey, i planted 2 this year and surprisingly they have both done almost too well 😂... Is it possible to move one?
@AllotmentBook
@AllotmentBook Год назад
Yes, best to wait until the plants completely die back in autumn, and then it’s possible to dig up and move the crown.

It is not easy with rhubarb! The colour, length of stem, and first harvest time are potential guides to help identify.

How close can you plant rhubarb?

A single plant can spread over a metre wide so I would leave at least that between plants

I’m growing rhubarb in hydroponics so what do I feed it?

I’ve never heard of growing rhubarb that way! Sorry I can’t be of help. For the rhubarb on my plot, I apply a mulch of well rotted manure when the plant is dormant in winter. I’ve always considered the plants quite ‘hungry’ for nutrients for the best harvest….
