The “heel” has node cells which are like “stem cells” and with the proper hormone you can manipulate them to either become root cells or by using opposite hormones it can become new shoots, that’s why his success rate is is so good, because the tip of his cutting is loaded with “node cells”

@@zye.... I use an Aloe Vera plant. Remove the top portion of one of the tines and scoop out the middle, blend it, put it in an air tight container, store it in the fridge. Dip cutting into it before planting. Works very well for me.

I wanted to add my thanks to the others for this marvelous video! Each time a question arose in my mind, You were answering it in the next sentences! It is funny, but your wonderful walking video at Wisley a couple of weeks ago, got me thinking of the beautiful satsuki azaleas in Japan. Your recent video about repotting them also fueled my interest in finding some to purchase, and have a try at tending them. Your videos are so very timely and I think I will try making cuttings, once I am able to find a good plant. Unfortunately, the lovely large azaleas we have in the southern US are completely different! I remember my surprise upon seeing azaleas in gardens in Japan, and being told they were azaleas... it was my first of many revelations about profound differences in the character of plants, even with shared names. I assume you recommend just an ordinary satsuki azalea and grow it into bonsai, as opposed to trying the online suppliers of bonsai here in the states? Of course, I hope to find my satsuki azalea locally. I have ordered the akadama mix and felco secateurs, and am anxious to begin! I have four of your books, and am finding them incredibly interesting and helpful. Thank you, also, for taking the time to write such a good collection of books. I am also ordering kanuma soil. Would you recommend the kanuma for satsuki azales planted in the landscape, if I am able to locate plants also for that purpose?

Nice coincidence and video! I just started around 100 satsuki and kurume cuttings 1 month ago (using a new mini greenhouse I recently bought). Also put a few Ume and San Jose cuttings in the new greenhouse as well. Keeping my fingers crossed this time around 🤞. I tried 1year ago, about 50 cuttings of various acers and azaleas, and Zero out of 50 rooted, lol. But, I’m sure the reason why they All failed was because I didn’t enclose them in a bag/box/greenhouse for humidity and moisture.

@@peterchan3100 Thanks Peter! You should've also taught/advised us as to when should/can we remove them from the greenhouse/bag and when it's okay to expose them into the real-world... and also important, when can we re-pot them into their individual pots?? I assume... in 4-6 months, it's okay to remove them from the humid greenhouse/bag, into the real-world and real-atmosphere. Correct? Also, I assume maybe in 10-12 months (from when first started) it is okay to up-pot/repot them. Correct? I'd think by 10-12 months, there would be sufficient roots and also hardened-off roots, safe enough to handle without being too fragile and ripped off easily during re-potting. Summary for slow-growing Satsuki (only my guesses): 2-3 months in: callous forms. 4-6 months in: few, tiny roots grow. Okay to expose into real-world. 7-9 months in: more roots grow and start to fill up pot. 10-12 months in: many roots grew and now exist; roots are hardened-off and tough enough to re-pot. So far, I am 4-6 weeks-in for my current cuttings inside my greenhouse, and they are all still bright green, alive and healthy, yay! Even the difficult Ume! 1 of the Ume is already sprouting (although, probably only from the stored-energy from its' vascular/stem and not any roots; since it's way too early still for roots). Next Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 (when my mini-greenhouse is empty again, haha), I will try even more cuttings again... perhaps more Ume, Quince, Acers, Pomegranates and Seiju elm this time. (of course, I still hope my current batch of Azalea cuttings roots... I've always wanted tons of Azaleas around the house).
