HI, I have been growing sprouts on and off for years. I used to work in a sprouting factory about 38 years ago and that's where I learned how. At first it was all about alfalfa sprouts. Then I branched out into other kinds including Broccoli When I had my first cancer 11 years ago I found out that Broccoli was good for fighting cancer. I'm on my second cancer now and growing sprouts again. When I first tried to sprout broccoli years ago I couldn't get then to sprout. I contacted the seed supplier and was told to soak them for only 2 hours instead of the usual 8 for other seeds. I've been doing this ever since and it works for me. I also just rinse the seeds in water to clean them and have never had problems. Thanks for all the info on the benefits of these sprouts I will keep growing and consuming them for the rest of my life.

I went through a whole pack of broccoli seeds with no issues, not using the soap/apple cider vinegar solution first to clean the seeds. I guess I just got lucky with the first pack. With the second pack, rinsing with only tap water (no soap/vinegar soak) ended up with sprouts smelling bad by the 2nd and 3rd day. They were discarded. Then I used your soap/vinegar soaking method on more seeds from the same package. This method worked perfectly and I just sprouted a big batch successfully. I now always use this method to ensure no bacteria remains on the seeds prior to sprouting. Thanks for your videos!

100% do more of these videos Rhonda! i am a chemistry grad, so i actually have watched and understood and truly learned so many things from all your talks/videos. they have played a vital role in helping me transform my life for the better. and im pretty sure your channel was a huge reason i started to have appreciation for my education once again, as working in industry has not allowed me to use much of what i have learned in school. You definitely played a major role in the transformation in my life. i used to be overweight, lazy and overworked. now im healthy and extremely active. i can even do lotus pose now :) But i often find myself recommending stuff you teach to people all the time. but unfortunately most of the good stuff is way too scientific and not simplified/concentrated to the important points, normal people would get alot of benefit from seeing. plus i think attention span of most people is pretty low. so probably 5-10 minute videos is what most people r looking for. anything longer just sends their monkey mind into being lazy and not showing interest in it(less views). i bet you will reach many people with a similar format of videos like this one. would love to see more like this. thanks for all that you do! and hope to see a whole lot more of your beautiful face!

Rhonda, great video! There’s a couple of tricks that are important; 1. It’s important with broccoli and especially broccoli sprouts to cook the sprouts before you eat them. Nobody does this! But they should. The sprouts contain the epi-specifier protein (ESP) which will cause the hydrolysis of the sprouts to go in a direction towards nitriles and away from sulforaphane. So to maximize the sulforaphane we have to cook the sprouts. I’m never really sure if I have over cooked the broccoli or the sprouts so I simply eat some myrosinase containing cruciferous vegetable like daikon skin or radish or spicy mustard etc. to replace the myrosinase. 2. There’s a great hack to triple the sulforaphane precursors; simply add a scant teaspoon of sugar to the rinse water on the third day and rinse as you normally would. I will try to dig up the study that was performed for this little hack. You’re basically adding stress and the plant response by building more of its defensive glucosinolate (sulforaphane precursor). Oh, also, make sure that your iodine levels are good before you tank up on broccoli sprouts. Some folks are sensitive or don’t have enough iodine and the sprouts can deplete/block the iodine according to some scientists.

I also use Todds Seeds.com as one source. You might be interested in another source for high quality seeds. These folks both sell seeds and for many years they ran a large spouting operation to supply fresh spouts to stores, restaurants and farmers markets. They have many shapes and sizes of sprouting containers. Including sizes in stainless steel which allow for growing larger batches, if you go in that direction. Their website hosts many pages of helpful instructions on a wide variety of plant seeds. One of my favorites is their “Long Life Sprout Mix.” This is an inspired blend of 17 Brassica seeds. As Dr Fahey said, not all brassicas have glucoraphanin the precursor to sulforophane. Dr Fahey went on to say, that brassica do have other isothiocyanates, many of which are good for you. The “Long Life Mix” brassica blend includes: Broccoli, Red Cabbage, Green Cabbage, Purple Kohlrabi, Collard Greens, Green Kale, Red Russian Kale, 4 varieties of Radish, Turnip, Oriental Mustard, Arugula, Curly Cress, Mizuna and Tatsoi. Hope this helps. sproutpeople.org/

@Photologistic
@Photologistic 3 года назад
That’s not sterilization, just good sanitation. This sort of thing is necessary when culturing to prevent bacterial growth. Star San (ask at your local home brewing store) would be fantastic for this, and much better than soap (lol). It’s all rinsed off, but star San (acidic solution that is safe to consume in small amounts but which kills 10,000,000 bacteria per second) would be more effective, and would need far less rinsing. In the end, you are rinsing with tap water, which is by no means completely free of bacteria (unless you have reverse osmosis system). So, you can still have some contamination, it’s just not likely to be enough to cause any issue. Complete sterilization requires pressure cooking for some time, etc., would not work for this.
@marynewman9180

@Photologistic
@Photologistic 3 года назад
@@marynewman9180 I thought I was being kinda picky, but with home brewing or science (of course) there is a real distinction between sanitized or sterilized. Star San works great for sanitizing, won’t add any soapy flavor. RO is sanitary rinse, still not sterile (as some microorganisms have spores that aren’t killed without pressure cooking as in home canning).

Then I freeze mine. When I pull a baseball size portion of them out of my food grade container those little green leaves just shine. Combine them with my other cold ingredients in the blender and blend for 30 seconds. The four raw egg yolks go in later and blend for only five as I don't want any heat on the yolks. I only use two and a half tablespoons of seeds and get almost a quart container of them. I just use my yogurt containers. Also, when I rinse them I put the seeds in an Oxo two cup angled measuring cup and it holds a quart mason jar at a good angle.

Loved video! Thank you for doing this, my first batch were plentiful 😊 Does it matter what time of day to eat broccoli sprouts? I have been blending mine and chugging them down in the afternoon like a snack. Does it matter for nutrient absorption to drink on an empty stomach or with food/other nutrients? Or is the idea generally to consume them any which time and way I can?

Are the sprouts suppose to stink even if you get the process right or is smell a sign that something went wrong?

No they shouldn't stink. They should smell fresh. They have rotted if they stink. I buy mine as they always rot when i try

Question: What about the 70 degrees celsius for 10 minutes? Is that old info that isn't up to date?
@gordoncorry3802

As a sprouter for 2 months, this is the question I searched the pdf for.... to soak at 65-70C or not to soak for the triple effect. 33g x 3 is easier than eating 100g. Seems I have been draining the bitter goodness off.

I’m initially soaking mine in a 10:1 bleach solution, then rinsing thoroughly and soaking 6-8 hours.

@@jw6180 There was a process earlier mentioned by Dr Patrick, in order to increase sulfurophane, that it needed to be heated at 70 celsius for 10 min. I was curious if this was up to date.

I have also been 'soaking' them in 65 degree water for 10 minutes to deactivate a competing enzyme pathway and hence increasing the amount of sulphoraphane. Its a bit of a pain and an update would be great! I wonder in Dr R still does this?

Thank you for this video! I have broccoli sprout seeds coming in the mail for the first time, so this was great timing. Vain request incoming: Could you do a video on the science of using nutrition to prevent facial wrinkles as we age? I know nutritious foods helps skin stay elastic, but if I knew exactly how, and exactly which foods were best, I might remember to eat them more.

Isn't the soap or bleach absorbed by the seed? During the current carona outbreak we are asked not to wash our produce using soap, how is this any different?
@spanchagn
@spanchagn 3 года назад
As per fda: www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/selecting-and-serving-produce-safely Wash all produce thoroughly under running water before preparing and/or eating, including produce grown at home or bought from a grocery store or farmers’ market. Washing fruits and vegetables with soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash is not recommended.
@Lunicapi
@Lunicapi 3 года назад
Short answer is no, the disinfectant mixture is on the outside of the seed for only long enough(10min) to kill off harmful bacteria, mold and other nasty things that otherwise would thrive in the moist environment. The seeds are to protect against absorption. This is why if you were to eat seeds whole, they come out in your poop unscathed and would be able to grow in the ground. Also, to everyone freaking out about using soap vinegar or bleach, the produce you buy in the supermarket is treated with a bleach solution before it is sold to supermarkets. That's not includes other methods used to extend shelf life of fruit and vegetables. disinfecting seeds should be the least of anyone's worries. Also, that video linked was not a professional saying not to wash with soap, it was some random person criticizing a doctor about using soap, random person does not understand the science of why something is safe, and they do not care to actually look up the science behind why it is safe. A doctor said to make sure to properly wash your produce by soaking in a diluted soap water mixture for a very short period of time.

Great video, Dr. Patrick! However, you forgot to mention the critical importance of quality seeds. The sulforaphane potential from the sprouts is only as impactful as the Glucoraphanin content in the seeds. I highly suggest that you consider this as a talking point in the future to spread awareness to your viewers. In theory, you could eat 10 pounds of sprouts grown from a seed with low Glucoraphanin and not achieve close to the same sulforaphane conversion if you consumed 1 pound of sprouts from a seed that contained high Glucoraphanin levels. I'd love to hear your feedback! Keep up the great work :)

I've seen a lot of other videos on this topic and NONE of them mention putting bleach or anything else in to remove bacteria. NO WAY will I personally be putting bleach on my food. But I'm just curious as to WHY you are suggesting this when no one else is?

I agree with you. I won’t use bleach either. I find apple cider vinegar works well. I soak the seeds for 15 mins before I start the sprouting process. Much safer.
