I grew butternut squash a while back, only really got the seed to sprout then I just put it in the soil…Took off like a weed! I had tons of honey bees do all the hard work and soon enough I had plenty of squash…I didn’t realize how much it would produce, not a bad thing but my friends definitely got some free squash that year lol.

Great video! I have a HUGE plant/vine growing from my compost pile. I didn't know what it was until I saw your video. I love butternut squash, but did not know it was GREEN until ripe! I'm a lucky girl!

If you have really bountiful amounts of butternut squash and multiple vines, then I strongly advise trying to cook some green ones. You’ll be amazed how a good they taste
Wow! That's hard to say... it depends how many female blossoms get pollinated. I know I had about 20 off my 2 plants, before I started cutting off the new growing tips.

I might be lucky in Australia because I can let the vine die prior to picking the pumpkin or squash because our frosts don't come until winter time. A lot of the farmers such as my grandfather was would place them on the roof of their shed during winter time & they would keep through the winter time !
I just transplanted my 2 butternut seedlings yesterday. It's the first week of spring here. They are doing well so far. My first time growing them let's see how it goes.

You should be ok with that, if you have a grow light. If not, wit until about 3 weeks before and start some new ones. If it gets warm enough outside during the day, you can put them outside for the afternoons (harden them off, first) and you should be able to squeak by.
I grew mine in a self-watering bucket and so far, only 2 female flowers in all of summer and fortunately, one that I hand-pollinated and right now nicely growing into a bn squash! 💪 Internet said that high summer heat could limit female blooms and indeed it was extremely hot in zone 5b in July 2023! Also in my bucket that was filled at 95% with just peat moss (not a good mix, I didn't know then), its leaves were nowhere as big as the ones in the video! The plant is fertilized twice a month with a commercial 24-8-16, I still wonder if the peat moss making the most of the content is also a factor in low female bloom production...🤔 Can female flowers appear in late summer past Labor Day? Enough time for squash to mature before fall frost? But I will be happy if my first-ever and lone squash can grow and resist bugs, temperature changes and other factors until October frost! That was my cool squash story.
All squash growing information is based on info that was available several years ago. Right now... it's TOO HOT for pollen to be viable. Plants are trying to survive, not make fruit. It's just a very hot year... I don't want to dash your hopes... but, global warming is changing some things. It's just too hot for pollen to even be viable. I'm going inside with hydroponics, because I cannot compete with the sweltering heat and insects.
@@BestBudsGardeningUpdate 2024-08-12: my in-ground butternut is vining sprawlingly with 7-8+ squashes! It’s definitely not made to grow in a standard 5 gallon self-watering bucket where a lonely mini-squash managed to make its place! Perhaps still possible in a much bigger container! 🤔 Very happy so far and a potential treillis for next year! 🙂
Great Video! My butternut plants are...well...odd. lol For the second year in a row, I've started woth nothong but female flowers. My vine is still short but they come in immediately. What I have to wait on are the male flowers. I see them at the bottom of the plant waiting to develop, but I just dont have any yet. This year, I will use the pollen from other squash plants to pollinate the butternut until I get some male flowers. I wont save the seed from the fruit though.
Males won't appear until your vines are about 6 feet long, maybe longer. Up until that point, your vines are just "practicing." Those females MIGHT not be real viable, since the plant is still just a baby.
@@BestBudsGardening they are about 6-7 feet now with BIG leaves! So I am hoping that the male flowers will develop soon. There are male stems, long ones, and there is a base for the male flower. But there is no actual flower 😔
Such an awesome and enjoyable video. I am trying to grow bnut this season. I am a new gardner as of last year and didn't plant them my first year of gardening. This is so helpful! Tell me, do you know of any companion or intercroping flowers, plants herbs that I should plant next to my bnut? I planted 1 zuch near them and 4 califlower near them.
Well, I don't know of any companion plants, right off the top of my head... but... boy! It sounds like you will have quite the squash bug problem! Keep me posted!
So I planted these seeds outside about 1-2 weeks ago in this cold weather and in a somewhat bad place. So I decided that I would bring a few inside to try to grow properly before I actually plant them. I have them in the bags with paper towels like you said, (because they sank immediately when I put them in a cup) but I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do since they were already out for so long. What should I do?
Sorry for the late response... fractured my ankle. If they didn't freeze, and sank... they are probably viable, and no harm done. If they froze, they probably sank because they're full of ice. By now, I'm sure you know the answer to your own question.
Yes, but, the bottom was cut out of the coffee can, so the roots could grow wherever they wanted to underground. The coffee can was just so my yard guy wouldn't hit it with the weed whacker.
I have a question, I know it’s a metal trellises in the stores are pretty weak, so what’s the best way to put a trellis in a canister ? because I do not have a lot of room, so I have to use my front porch to place my plants in container. Which is no problem I’m growing herbs and peppers and spinach and celery, green onions , garlic 🧄 Now I purchased two butternut squash, and I placed them in the canister a pretty large one, then I said I was going to purchase welded wire 2” x 4 in 14 inch gauge, 5 inches tall to make my trellis to put in the canister and then play some steaks in them out of that sound to you ? 😍👩🏾🦲🥰 thanks for your help.
I'm not sure I understand... you're wanting to anchor a trellis in a canister? Why would you be interested in anchoring a trellis into a cannister? Most people anchor their trellis into the ground. Am I missing something?
I don’t have the space , because I saw another video where a lady did hers in a a very large container pot , so I figured it was possible, so I am going to try and place it in a very large container pot 6:51 I already planted it. It’s already growing, and I also saw her video where she made a trellis with welded wire. It almost look like a tomato trellis but it’s much dirtier and strong so I figure if I don’t try it I’ll never know never, you know until make effort to do the impossible trial and error and if doesn’t work, her’s work I believe and in the impossible and what’s the worst thing happened ,I won’t die from it, so I’ll give it a whirl! all things are possible! Sorry for the late response... fractured my ankle... Whatever female blossoms are pollinated... shall bear fruit. Usually, the bees take care of this. Even if there aren't a lot of bees in your neighborhood... bees can see these blossoms from more than a mile away. You probably won't have to hand-pollinate. But, if you do need to, just wipe some pollen from a male blossom onto the center of the female blossom.
If you are in the United States... WAIT!! You really don't want to start these indoors, under a grow light, sooner than 6 weeks before your last frost date. If you plan to directly plant them outside, wait until night temperatures are consistantly above 60 to 65 degrees.
Love your videos! So helpful to know if my garden is on the right track. If you're taking requests.... I would love to hear about spaghetti squash. Also, if you have any knowledge to share about fertilizer, bugs, etc, would live to hear it!
I've never seen ariel roots on a butternut squash. Tomatoes and tomatillos commonly get them. That being said, they shouldn't hurt anything. If they are sending out ariel roots, though... are they getting enough water? Are you watering the stem? (That might encourage roots to grow.)
@@BestBudsGardening they get watered once a day I think this variety is supposed to grow laying on the ground. I forgot to put my trellis in before letting it climb resulting for the vine to grow on my wooden deck for a little bit it didn’t grow to much because I planted them mid July for some reason. The vine grew as long as my arm. I guess it thought it was on dirt or something like that.
@@toastybeans4460 If it's a ground variety, then I understand why it is growing ariel roots. But, it won't hurt it at all to grow on your deck. I grow vines on my deck all the time. Mid July is a little bit late to be starting them... they may not have time to fully ripen. But, even if you don't have time to finish them this year, they are still beautiful plants with big, beautiful blooms that feed a lot of bees.

I recently bought a butternut from the store and while preparing it I kept the seeds. I have about 10-12 seedlings now that I've started in a tray outside. I realize I'm starting a bit late, but if this works it could but fun!
I did the same thing last year! I started about this time or a little later last year. The plants took off in July and in August I saw the squash beginning to grow. But, I ran out of time for I don't think they all matured (based on size and color) by my first frost date in early November. I still ate them and saved the seeds for this year. They are growing now and I see small butternut squash, but I wonder if they will grow to maturity since the seeds weren't from mature fruit.
I’d really love to grow these eventually. One thing I’ve seemed to discover is that if I get one in the store that has even the slightest hint of green lines, it won’t be juicy so I won’t buy it. A juicy squash is a delicious squash! I love adding salt and pepper to mine.
I just continued the seeds in the bags with paper towels, and they’ve germinated!! Thnks so much for the help- I don’t think they’d have lived otherwise!
I planted a baby butternut squash last year. It did well. I saved some seeds which have sprouted. But i could not get it to grow up a trellis. It would break. Any insight?
I'd use a grow light, or time it to where they can enjoy warm days outside. You might have to bring them in at night, but sounds like they're not getting enough sun. Seedlings are "born" without the need to be hardened off.

I like to run my butternut vines along the ground. I gave found that if you cover the vine every few feet, you almost can not kill the squash. I did the above to one my butternut squash plants that I was growing in a feed bag. Covering every few feet, then one day I was going to trim it up...😂😢 I cut the main stem coming from the main roots... I knew it was going to die 😮... nope, it grew better. 😆
Yes... they like to come back, don't they? I remember my yard guy mowing down my young pumpkin vines one year... came right back! Kind of weird, because they should need some leaves in order to do that. I won't tempt fate, and cut them back... but, I agree with you!
It's a one month and all of my flower became female flower and male didn't open but female did and get rotten . I am in Bangladesh and it's in may where continuous rain pouring everday. What can i do now to force those male flower to bloom as long as with female flower. Thank you. Seeds have been collected from USA and it may be USA varieties.
There might be too much nitrogen in the soil... but, at just one month, I'm betting the situation will correct itself within the next month or so. Don't give up. USA seeds won't care which country they grow in, as long as they're loved. :)
I am truly sorry to hear of your past experience. I am still with my wife, going on 48 yrs of marriage, and I can assure you that my wife thinks of me as a thorough gentleman, except when I speak my mind aloud, like a persons incorrect pronunciation of a word or words of the English language. Peter... no harm done. I appreciated your opinion, and think you have a valid point. Perhaps that is something about my "style" I need to change. If you feel talked down to...perhaps others feel the same way. I know I will never be able to please everyone, but, if I can at least take out offensive parts... that would helpful. I only want to teach people how to grow stuff. My mother was my best gardening buddy... hence the name of my channel. She taught me so much, and I want to pass that on to others. @@BestBudsGardening Yes, I tell her everything, and her ususl reply is "no wonder you don't have any friends" :) :) :) I always make comments on any and everything that I can back up with facts, or else I keep my mouth shut. So, if I don't have any friends because of that, then so be it, as long as I have my wife. I have quite a lot of things to do that keep me mentally and physically occupied, rather than put up with fools.
If it's early in your season, some of the first blossoms will be all female, but they will not open. They will abort. If it's later in your season, it could be a due to some kind of stress like nutrients, water, etc. A meter long squash plant is still pretty young. So, probably those are just "practice" females.
@@anoniman06 That is a PERFECT place to grow this plant. Don't cut it off. Let nature take it's course and naturally abort it.. Give it more time. A meter is a very short plant, which tells me it's not that old. If it's been growing for months and months, and is only one meter long, then you have another problem, but it still might produce for you, if you get the problem corrected. These guys need about 120 days to produce mature fruits. Most of the female blossoms die off in the beginning. they come back, later, after the male blossoms appear.
I know the heartbreak of seeing female blossoms abort. It's just too early. The plant is sort of "practicing". Let it do its thing, and I think you'll be amazed at the fruit it produces later on.
