For those asking for online source of cactus seeds, I only know of 2 websites - cactusstore.com (I only tried them once) and starastrophytum.com (suggested by a friend, but I have not personally tried them yet). 😉 if you become a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, you can get access to purchase seeds from their Seed Depot. Feel free to suggest websites that sell seeds which you have tried and had a good experience with. It will be useful information for everyone.
I ordered from unusualseeds.net. It takes a while I think they are in a European country. I’ve ordered from them in the past and had good germination success that’s where I got the seed for my desert roses which have done really well
Yup. I started with 4 Euphorbia obesa's. now i have 180. LOL.! I love to pollinate them since they are male & female plants and capture the seeds since they catapult through the air. Pure addition like Melkjor says! hehe.
Hi, I hope you don't mind me saying that was one of the best videos I've seen about growing cactuses extremely extremely good and welldone for your editing and the way that you presented the information in a clear and concise way in a way that people could follow I've contacted the companies that provide seeds below. I hope they are able to ship to Bulgaria.
Hi Ana! I love this video with very clear, structured, and professional guidance on how to sow cactus seeds. I also love the cup of coffee in all your videos! Have a great week from Florida🌞
What a lovely and informative video on cactus seed germination, Ana! I know you definitely put in a lot of thought, effort, photography and editing into the making. I enjoyed every minute of watching and listening to it. I also enjoyed seeing your awesome collection. Big like 👍
Thank you Molly. Yes, this has been the hardest video that I did so far as it took a long time to make. I had to wait for the seeds to grow. 😉 Thank you so much for your support always. 👍🏼☺️
You rock Anna! Ive followed you for quite awile now. You always talk/teach without talking dow to us. I foe one thank you so very much. I dont know where in asia you come from, but listining to you talk makes me somehow feel closer to my gf/wife to be Jan. Keep up tbe great work. Love your collection and tutorals! Cheers!
Awesome advice. I'll try some of these methods. Just need to secure some seeds. I've learnt that cacti grown from seeds are more resilient to heavy waterfall and mistakes, compared to store bought cacti
I followed your instructions and I am happy with the results. The first lot are growing well outside the plastic bag now. My latest batch are Peruvian Apple cactus and are doing well!
Absolutely BRILLIANT video Ana :-D its so much fun or I should say 'SOW; much fun haha to grow Cactus from Seed, its so rewarding and wonderful to watch them grow over the weeks and months and years, this video is fantastic and so very detailed, I LOVE it, thanks so much for sharing all of this AMAZING info for cactus seed sowing beginners, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a wonderful new week ahead XXXXX
Lol on “sow” much fun. 😁 Yes it is so fun and when the seedlings grow to adult size and flowers, the sense of accomplishment is greater than just buying a grown cactus. Thank you Lyn, for your support. Cheers from Vegas to the Emerald Isle!
Thanks for this video, Ana. You are so informative and excellent to show how you do. I have never tried growing cactus from seed, but this video gives me motivation to try. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for this detailed informative video, and for all the tips you've shared! My sentiments resonate with everyone else's comments here, super helpful video for beginners like me!
Just a tip for anyone trying to grow seeds. You can definitely pull them out of humidity whenever its required (fungus, rot, mass damping off). Common myth is that they need to adjust to low humidity. I pull mine out right after they germinate and i have over 95% survival rate.
@@claudekim7876hey if you happen to get this notification of my message, please reply as soon as you can! It’s been two years since your comment so we’ll see what happens lol 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️ You mentioned her above “proven method” to grow cacti 🌵 in humid environments can be pulled out after sprouting, and that her method doesn’t work for you, Would you mind filling me in on your method.? I’m about to begin a prickly pear grow. I gathered some wild seeds and I’m looking for any recommendations for instruction from someone personally instead of five video I live in Colorado. It’s currently going to be winter solstice in December and it’s basically a very dry cold climate here. Please get back with me when you can. Cheers.
Great video Ana !!! Very informative!!! Had a little mold problem with some of mine. But gave them more air and sprayed them. They seem to be doing well now. Battling cold right now. At this time it is 3:00 am and it is 16° outside. Supposed to go down to 10° by daybreak!!! Later in the week it is possible it will drop below zero!! Have had to put a lot of my rarities in my shop & safe room to keep them warmer. From Morris park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, stay warm Ana!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴💐🌲🌷🌳🌺🌿🌹
Oh my that is brrr cold.🥶 I hope all your plants will be well. Thank you for watching this video Clyde. Even though I know you are no beginner when it comes to seed sowing. 😉 By the way, how long does it take for Euphorbia seeds to germinate? Mine has been close to a month and still none germinated. Euphorbia obesa x Euphorbia snowflake.
I am growing some mammillaria cactus from the seeds I harvested last fall, and they have been germinated very well. Thank you so much for your advice! This is the first time I grew cactus from seeds. Definitely will do more now since it is so much fun!
Excellent and very informative video. Also very inspiring and I would say that the tips and tricks can be applied for other seeds than cactusas well. Your voiceover is extremely cute too :D Thanks for the posting of this video.
Thanks Ana, I collected some seeds from one of cactus last summer. I plan to plant them sometime in March. I really appreciate your advice from this video!
Hey Ana I checked on my seeds today and they're sprouting!!!!!!! I'm so excited. I plan to leave them in the bag for 4 months like you said. Thank you so much for all your advice.
Hi Ana. I would just like to thank you for this very informative video. I sowed my Melocactus seeds by following the steps that you showed here, and after around 2 weeks I saw through the plastic bag that there are some sprouts already. Thanks Ana.
Excellent and informative video. Thank you! I'm only trying to grow actual seedlings now. Perhaps I will try from seed next. According to your video, I think my seedlings (2yrs old slow growing Discocactus) will be better uncovered and in my windowsill over the summer. I have them in Akadama and it will help me know when to water next. Thanks again.
I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial. I am very inspired by your method of growing cactus from seeds. I was once told that growing cactus from seeds is a very slow process as they take years to develop. And so i was discouraged and was never interested in growing cactus from seeds. After watching your video, i am definitely going to source some seeds and try this procedure. Thank you so much for imparting this knowledge. This leaves me so excited, i can't wait to grow my very own cacti. Cheers to you from Precious Blooms👍😁
Oh, I hope you’ll give them a go. 😃 It intimidated me at first too but once I tried it, I just kept going. 😉 I’m not sure but I think this is easier than growing orchids from seed? 🤔 Thank you for visiting my channel. ☺️
@@CactusCaffeine i visited Unusualseeds.net website and i was blown away with the huge variety of seeds available. I am definitely going to explore this process. And yes, it is most definitely much easier to grow cacti from seeds than orchids 😁. I will continue to watch and learn from your channel as you continue to educate us. Cheers from Precious Blooms👍💐😊
What a great video, thank you! I'm about to try growing cactus from seed for the first time and your instructions were very clear - I'm looking forward to trying this and viewing your other videos.
I really appreciate the tips on dealing with the fungus gnats. I never thought to use crumbled up mosquito dunks. btw: mosquito dunks are rated organic. I've always dusted the top of my soil with diatomaceous earth. It creates a barrier that kills the gnats if they try to cross it. it then washes down into the soil and gets the larvae. Sprinkle some more on top.
Thank you. Really useful. About to start growing my own but had no idea where to begin. I have the right compost etc to state but had no idea they needed so much warmth so I'll hold off until spring
Thank you so much, I have been disappointed by the vast majority of seed's that I have tried to start this way!! So, I guessed, that perhaps it was the seed. This is an awesome and comprehensive video for growing up cactus seeds, and brilliant when you have good seeds. . Totally the best way to start with seeds, well, I bought from a different company, and YAY!! Success!! Thank You so Much, now I have my beautiful Cactus 🌵 the other company kept telling me that I was going about this the wrong way,,,, Turns out they'd been selling me seed's from Coleus plants, that were dead already!!🤷🤦🤷🤷!🌵 Btw, I spent a lot of money on the seeds, and I had to pay for a specialist to look at the seeds from the 1st company, Oh well ... Supreme suprise was that I had also got chipped plastic in one packet, not just a few, but the Whole lot!! Actually laughed so hard I put my back out, when I realized I had been "nurturing" tiny chips of plastic!!🤣 (*The Company is now defunct!!) Grateful Thanks from a Happy Gardener,(with bad eyesight!!)💞XxX🌵 Ps, Sorry for my English, is not my first language. ...XxX...
Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry that happened to you. But I love your sense of humor and how you can look back and laugh at it. 😄 That company deserves to be out of business. I’m happy that you finally had success sowing cactus seeds. Hope they grow well for you! 😊🌵☕️
Thanks for the video. I have FINALLY had my first cactus seedlings spring up from seeds. It has been about two years of trial and many errors before I got my babies to grow. I am excited to try these methods on future cactii. Special mention should go to the giant saguaro - wo, mama! 💗🌵
Thank you so much for this video! You went into such great detail & talked about stuff that I've wondered about but hadn't yet seen in any other vids. You have been incredibly helpful & I thank you so much!
I cant wait to see our Barrel Cactus get big and flower someday. Im under the impression it should take about 15 years or so. Crazy this is the plant we saw in the wild and decided to grow.
Glad to watched this video, very informative and interesting sis. Looking forward to see the result. I’m interested in the one where you followed the instructions on the kit. And I really want to try the one where you used the hydrogen peroxide, can’t wait to see the tiny babies 🌵 sowing season again so this is a must watch video.
Love this episode - subscribed! Hey, point of caution, that might detrimentally confuse viewers. When you mention 40% hydrogen peroxide for mold control, I think what you really mean is 40% of a 3% solution, which is actually 1.2% HP
So after I watched this, I purchased some astrophytum seeds. Totally inspiring! Question about soil, though, would you recommend buying those pre-mixed cactus soil or do you typically add more perlite to those?
Are you going to use the soil to germinate the seeds? If yes, I would not recommend a pre-mixed cactus soil as they are too gritty for seedlings. If you still want to use it, you would have to sift the soil to remove rocks or big barks.
Oh, so happy for you. Some seeds take their time to sprout. Some are fast. My longest one took 5 months to germinate. (Echinopsis mirabilis) Was about to give up. 😉
I sowed a whole package of cacti seeds a few weeks (February 2024) ago and I have sprouts! I used little pots, thoroughly wet the growing medium (store purchased cactus soil) and put the pots in a clear covered container that previously contained pastries. I placed the container in my garden window that faces south. The window receives full and some filtered sun. I did not use a heat mat. I live in Chicago, IL so that gives you an idea of how cold it can be in February. The indoor house temp has been 67 degrees F. There has been a lot of moisture build-up in the clear container. Stupid me opened it today to take a peek. The soil is still very wet so hopefully I will see condensation form again on the inside. Anyway, I think the whole process of these seeds requiring lots of moisture and filtered sun is odd because that growing condition is completely opposite of the outside desert environment. Has anyone on this board tried sowing the seeds and mimicking the natural environment?
I love your videos! So informative and simple. I just bought a pack of seeds. I'll probably plant them next month. I'm thinking of doing it in a small fish bowl so the humidity will stay up. I'm also trying a kit for prickly pear opuntia ficus indica. It's pretty cool. I want cactus to be a regular part of my diet.
Great video! When I started my seedlings, the warmth of a UK summer doesn’t last long so I was wondering how often you water your seedlings during the dormant winter period? I let my adult cactus dry out over winter, do I do the same with seedlings or water them enough to prevent shrivelling? Thanks 😁
I recently picked a prickly pear fruit near where I live (tempe, az) and I recovered the seeds and I’m letting them dry out right now. I am wanting to plant some to add a native to Arizona cacti to my collection. Would the method you showed us in the video be the same I should do with my seeds? Or is there something else I should be doing with that species? Thank you
