Michelia Alba, also known as Pak Lan, is a large evergreen flowering tree cultivated for its highly perfumed creamy white colored blossoms. The profuse flowers are highly prized. Both the flowers and leaves are highly aromatic and can be used in fragrance production. On a warm humid night, the scents can be enjoyed several hundred feet away. The tree has a long flowering season, up to six months.
Magnolia Alba, also known as the white champaca, white sandalwood, or white jade orchid tree, is a flowering plant of hybrid origin that is commonly cultivated in Southeast Asia and tropical regions of East Asia. Although the exact origin is uncertain, it is considered to be a hybrid of Magnolia champaca and Magnolia montana.
In this video I am going to update you guys my air layered Michelia Alba plants that I transplanted in the container. I am going to share my experience with you that how I recover and care for Michelia Alba and currently my plant is doing very well and is blooming.

Thank you for updating your michelia plant. I asked because I too found it difficult to have the michelia alba live even after a successful air layer. So last and this year I had a total of three michelia alba take root, two did not make it. Both died because of root rot due to repotting with peat moss only and an inch of water. Then I saw on your video and soil composition. You recommended a cactus mix soil. So I used that, but still my michelia was drying up and the leaves were dropping. Then I placed it under an inch of water, and lo and behold the drying of the branches stopped, and now it took. My last michelia is alive and well with new leaves growing. I too live in Southern California. So the takeaways I got after my success are 1) Making sure I have lots of root growth before cutting off from mother plant 2) It takes roughly 6-8 months for roots to establish for air-layering to work. 3) cutting the branch off during the summer and humid months when the Michelia Alba is growing is best for the branch to survive. 4) Use cactus soil mix and place it under shade with an inch of water always. Now I have about four or five branches air layered. I will cut them next year and give them away to friends and family. Thanks again for your detailed video!

Thank you so much for sharing your story, successful experience and tips with all of us Michelia Alba lovers. I totally agree with you, and thanks for your dedication to improve the technique and success rate. A well developed root ball will make your job easier and more successful. Wait a little bit longer is worthwhile. Well drained soil is crucial to keep root healthy. Recovery and establishment might be time consuming. Good job and Good luck. Keep it up. Please update us if you would like to. Thanks.

This is a very helpful video! Thank you for sharing your experience and keep us updated on the progress. I read discussions from people online and saw that the branches were not easy to be air-layered. Sometimes the whole branches were dead after 3-4 weeks of air-layering. For transplanting rooted branches, I wonder if creating a small greenhouse would help the leaves and small branches from drying, like covering with clear plastic bag to retain moisture.
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for your interest and comments. Based on my experience, I did not have problems to root the branches by air layering, but it seems to be challenging for rooted branches to survive as an independent plant. Plastic bags will help keep moist and prevent drying out. Well rooted branches might be easy, but it is time consuming.

I think that after you pot the branch, you should greatly reduce the number of leaves. You need to remember that the root system is very small, and can not supply enough water and nutrients for so many leaves. If you remove most of the leaves when you pot it has a much greater chance of surviving.
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily Год назад
Hi, my friend, you are totally correct. For me, most of the plants I propagated using air layering I did not remove any leaves, branches, flowers and even fruits. You can check out my videos about citrus trees and camellias. But as you pointed out, it is the best and right way to remove some branches and leaves to reduce plant stress if the plant is not happy after potting in the container. Thanks, you are absolutely right. 💯

Impressive, was this an update from the previous video where you air layered branches from your friends tree? Really would like to know more about this species. For example the difference between Michelia Alba vs Michelia Champaka. What's the best way to keep them in containers what do you need to feed and how frequently you water them etc etc. Many thanks for this vid and info tho'
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily 2 года назад
Yes, you are absolutely right, it is an update video of my previous video about the same plant. Regarding this two plants, they are pretty much the same, here is the point. Michelia champaca, now is classified as magnolia champaca, also know as yellow/orange champaca, is yellow or orange color flowers, it is the original variety. Michelia Alba, commonly know as white champaca, sometimes as Magnolia Alba, white flowers, is a hybrid of Michelia champaca with another plant. I think now you know the difference. For my plant, at the beginning it was not established, so I paid more attention to it. Only after I saw some tiny leaf buds emerged from leaf nodes, I feed my plants 🪴. Generally speaking nothing special once the plant is established. BTW, the plant was once infected by aphids which can destroy tender leaves, so I have to take good care of it, that's why you can see this live plants. Hopefully it is helpful for you. Thanks for watching, I am going to upload several other michelia alba videos, hopefully soon.

Hi, I have a store-bought michelia alba, which grew pretty big (6ft tall) after 2 years. Recently, it suddenly started dying. Just like yours, all the leaves turned yellow, then brown, and now only branches left. After researching and watching your video, I feel slightly more hopeful. I'm studying the branches, and I see some buds that are somewhat green, but not as vivid green as yours in the video. I want to keep trying and revive it. Can you provide any advice and tips on what you did to revive yours? Did you do anything special
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily Год назад
Hi there, sorry to hear about that. You already have this plant for two years, if it happened just recently, so I think something must have happened to it. Would you mind mentioning your location and climate? Did you do something on the plant or whether the weather changed suddenly? Did you still grow the plant in the pot or in the ground? Did you see pests or disease infection? The leaf buds erupt recently or just the old one left on the branches. Can you see the green on the branches? Usually, the root system has some issues, otherwise it will not affect so much. Based on my experience, once established, the plant is kind of low-maintenance. My plant is doing well even though I seldom take care of it. But if new rooted branches are trying to grow, it is really a challenge. I just recently cut off and pot up another rooted branch, I am still monitoring the plant.

Impressive! Thank you for your update. Did you keep it outdoor all the time? How much and how often did you water it?
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily 2 года назад
Thanks, yes, I always keep it outdoor. I want to clarify that i did NOT cut any leaves and branches after I cut off and tranplanted in the container. At the beginning, I keep it mostly in the shade especially before it was established. Michelia Alba has large leaves 🍃 which is relatively easy to lose water. Regarding watering, just regularly water it, do not let it dry out or soak in the water. Well drained soil might be helpful to make this goal.
@hl888
@hl888 2 года назад
@@LAyangfamily I agree that many leaves and small branches should have been cut when it was transplanted. But I don't know optimal quantity. Even though it's relatively warm (above 60F?) in winter in your area (I assume Southern California), it probably should have kept it indoor. So the decreases in temperature might be part of the reason that all old leaves dropped faster than we expected.
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily 2 года назад
@@hl888 Yes. The plant will feel less stressed if cut off some branches and leaves, it might be helpful for the plant to survive. It is true it is hard to make a decision how much we should remove the branches/leaves. But for me, I usually do not cut off any branches and leaves when I transplanted air layed plants, I'd like to challenge this technique. We live in LA in Southern California, relatively warm in the winter. I agree with you, the lowest weather in December might be harmful to the plant. Personally I think a well developed root ball on the branch will make your work easier.

I ordered one online and it came in a black nursery plastic pot. The plant is about 18" tall, should I transplant to a large container and what type or size container would be appropriate? And any particular soil? Thanks.

I would suggest you wait for a while to let the plant get used to your new environment , and also you know how to take care of it. The pot size depends on your plant size. I once used black plastic pot to grow it without any problems. Any well drained rich soil is ok. Good luck. Thanks.

Hi, my friend from Spain 🇪🇸 (?) , thanks for your interest in this kind of plant. Based on your current situation, i did some search, I have two suggestions you might want to try if you really want to gave your own plant 🪴. One is you can search and buy from English version overseas Alibaba website, there are some plants for sale on this website by saler, this is website from China 🇨🇳, all plants original from China, which is much much cheaper, compared with our local LA store. The other way is to contact Chinese Association in Spain or your nearest local area or Madrid. I think they'd like to help you and give you any helpful suggestions. Good luck, if anything help from me I would like to.

Hi, I have michelle alba for past 3 years. We are in US and zone 8b so have to bring them inside during winter. but this year, suddenly, it lost all its leaves and the new growth thats coming is drying out after a few inches of growth and the branches are dry. my plant behaved exactly like yours and now the new brnaches thats growing are drying at the tip.I did the scratch test and confirm that the tree is still alive. Watching your video, i m hopefully, I m going to try this. I m worried about the plants I have. They are in containers as was doing so good all these years. I donot know what else to do. can you please help ?
@LAyangfamily
@LAyangfamily 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your information, and I am sorry to hear your plant is not happy and healthy now. Based on your description, there are several things you need to think about. Your plant is well established in the container, and it very well in the past a couple of years without problems. Everything changed this year suddenly, kind of the situation is not good, so I think something changed recently it dramatically affects your plant. You said you move your plant indoor to overwinter, it means the plant is sensitive to the low temperature in your local area. I'm not sure whether it happened the dramatic temperature changes negatively affect your plant, especially this past winter. I once heard this plant is sensitive to strong wind. New shoots dried out and died, all these I want to you check whether your plant root system is not healthy. I highly suspect this. Check whether the soil is too dry or too soggy. Another thing you need to check is whether it is affected by some insects or diseases. I know some insects or bugs 🐛 can eat the plant leaves or aspirate the sap. Hopefully, all these suggestions are helpful to you. If you want to discuss this further, you can send pictures to layangfamily@gmail.com to see whether I can help you. Thanks and good luck.
