How to Propagate Michelia Alba | Rooting Michelia Alba Branches | Pak Lan Air Layering (白兰的繁殖)

Michelia Alba, also known as Pak Lan, is a large evergreen flowering tree cultivated for its highly perfumed creamy white colored blossoms. The profuse flowers are highly prized. Both the flowers and leaves are highly aromatic and can be used in fragrance production. On a warm humid night, the scents can be enjoyed several hundred feet away. The tree has a long flowering season, up to six months.
Magnolia Alba, also known as the white champaca, white sandalwood, or white jade orchid tree, is a flowering plant of hybrid origin that is commonly cultivated in Southeast Asia and tropical regions of East Asia. Although the exact origin is uncertain, it is considered to be a hybrid of Magnolia champaca and Magnolia montana.
In this video I am going to give you a general introduction about Michelia Alba. I will also show you how to propagate Michelia Alba using air layering technique. To achieve successful rooting, I used different rooting hormones and rooting media, thus you will know which combination might be the best way to propagate Michelia Alba. In this video I have successfully rooted several Michelia Alba branches. After that I transplanted rooted Michelia Alba to the container.

非常感谢你的提问，事实上我只有Michelia Alba，没有见过或种过Magnolia champaca （黄色），所以不能回答你的问题。不过我把以前各位网友的提问及我的回答贴在下方，供你参考。针对你的提问，我觉得网上可能会有更多的答案。谢谢。（1） Regarding this two plants, they are pretty much the same, here is the point. Michelia champaca, now is classified as magnolia champaca, also know as yellow/orange champaca, is yellow or orange color flowers, it is the original variety. Michelia Alba, commonly know as white champaca, sometimes as Magnolia Alba, white flowers, is a hybrid of Michelia champaca with another plant. I think now you know the difference. （2） Oh my god Mr. Yang i have this tree in my garden. I actually wanted magnolia champaca but my gardener brought this instead. It is said that Magnolia champaca is more fragrant than this one

thanks for sharing. try to wrap the root ball with aluminum foil to limit possible exposure to sunlight which causes the rooting media to dry up quicker.

Thanks for watching, yes, I agree with you. Aluminum foil is a good stuff to protect your root ball from getting sun burn. I always using plastic sheet to wrap the media, and also tightly seal both ends using cable ties. To be honest, I usually has no moisture problem inside the root ball.

I have a orange champaca and a white champaca growing in my backyard. Failed many times to propagate these... I will try your method. I want to plant these in front also.

My way really works as you saw in my video, but maintenance is also critical after you cut off rooted plant and transplant in the pot. I will post an updated video later. Thanks and good luck.

你好，谢谢。很好奇，你肯定你是花了1000美元，而不是100美元买了这棵树，尽管我知道这种树非常贵。根据你的描述，我个人认为，你的树没有太大的问题，因为长了很多新叶子，并且不停的开花。如果你变黄的叶子只是树底部的老叶子，可以不用管他。如果变黄的叶子比较多，并且涉及到一些比较年轻的叶子，那有可能是由某些因素造成的，比如说土壤的排水性，酸碱度，以及营养的平衡等。某些营养尤其是一些微量元素的缺乏，可以体现在叶尖变黄。很难一言两语说的清楚，只要不是大量出现叶子变黄且蔓延至整个叶子，而只是仅仅出现在部分叶尖的话，可以暂时不用管他。我个人认为，增加排水性以及补充微量元素，可能是必要的。相对于盆栽植物，其实地栽植物微量元素的缺乏不是很明显。

@@LAyangfamily 确实是1000多 2米多的树。叶尖变黄只是从老叶子开始，树应该没大问题。我猜也是排水性，浇水水现在也只是一周两三次浇透。你视频里的树叶子基本上是全绿，上帝保佑我的白玉兰

@@Harbour8529 😊👍🙏 不太清楚你是什么时候地栽的，刚开始的时候，可能需要更多的看护。一段时间后，根系稳定后，你基本上可以不用管他了。现在是秋天了，尽管玉兰花仍在开放，我个人觉得如果不是太干旱，基本上也不需要浇水太勤。祝你好运，不要太担心，有什么问题可留言，我尽量帮你解答，因为我也有一棵空中压条的玉兰树栽在前院。

Yes, you are right, in November the weather here is still pretty warm because I still wore shirt in the video, and afternoon sunlight was still pretty strong for this kind of large leaf plant. I remember I once exposed my cut fig branches too long in the sunlight when I shot the video, later the leaves dried out immediately because of sunburn and dehydration.

Hi, Carl, thanks for your comments, support, and trust. We do like Michelia Alba, now I only have one plant which I propagated using air layering. So far the plant is good, I will make another video to update you guys that air layering is a effective to propagate this kind of plant. Based on your situation, I'd like to recommend you that you'd better check your local Asian garden center, it would be the best way to purchase this amazing plant because the shipping will be a big challenge for the plant even though if I have an extra plant. I can not guarantee the plant can survive after shipping and also fast shipping fee would be pricy. If you need any help, please let me know. Thanks. Good luck.

If you google Michelia alba, you will find some people are trying to sell this plant online, I found some deals at ebay. Additionally, I remembered I once found some people were selling Michelia Alba on our local website (www.chineseinla.com), so I checked out this website, but this time I did not find any record, but there are some resources that you might be interested. There are some nursery stores owned and run by Chinese American may have this plant, and they can ship the tree across the country. kind of most people propagate this plant using air layering, so not sure whether it works or not, but air layering is a easy and effective way to get a mature plant easily.

I am interested in buying a Michelia Alba plant in Vancouver. However, I cannot find anybody selling small plants. I would appreciate very much if you can tell me where to buy them. If you cannot find any seller in Canada, can you sell me some small plants?

Thanks, Dave. Michelia Alba is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia such as China, so you'd better check your local Chinatown in Vancouver, which might give you some help. Also I know somebodies are trying to sell this plant online such as ebay and etsy. Unfortunately I do not have extra plants now, and also shipping might be another challenge. But I would like to share my experience with you guys if you need any technique support. Good luck.

Michelia alba is native to China and southeast Asia. We are in Los Angeles, this plant is not available in most garden centers, my friend bought this plant from local garden center which is run by Chinese. So the easy way for you is that you need to check out your local Chinatown or something like that to see whether they have this plant, even though just in case they don't have this plant in stock, but they usually know where they can get it. So you can order, they can take care of the rest, as far as i know LA have something like this kind of service. Usually it should be cheaper if imported and shipped directly from China.
