We've had very nice weather mixed with cold and wet. Kind of typical for this climate (Denver,CO) but I try to keep on track of when to plant outside and when. I always refer to your videos for good information. So true about the wrong fertilizers and getting results that are disappointing. Hope you and Bill are enjoying your nice weather.

My Danvers Half Long & Parisian Carrots seem to be doing well but I don`t know for sure yet. I am seeing tubers forming. I had to haul in forest soil in a wagon because this rural lot had the soil bulldozed away long ago. While growing stunted turnips & radishes as a soil test I started adding some lime pellets, bone meal, and an organic type of fertilizer with 20 added microbes until they began growing proper tubers. I`m building layers of soil and adding all my grass clippings, mowed over chopped leaves, pine straw and rotted logs and stump pieces to the garden.

@@SusansInTheGarden My OCD nephew was horrified when he saw my garden. Ha! He refuses to listen to me to learn anything so he has no idea what I`m doing or why. He just assumes and thinks a garden should look like pictures he`s seen. He tried growing in containers last year during a drought and wasted about 1000 dollars. I just wish I had known he was killing all the blueberry plants so I could have gotten cuttings in time.

I have onions, radishes, pepper plants and a few tomatoes (loved the names "Goddess of the Moon") some time you just cant help yourself. ha ha My Cherokee Purple seedlings aren't ready. Glad you are officially/finally out of winter. Have a great week.

Hi, Donna! That IS a cool name for a tomato, LOL. We still have a ways to go until we can plant the tender veggies but at least I can get the cool-season crops in.

Susan, for the last two or three years, I’ve been trying to grow radishes without much success. I don’t know what’s gone wrong, as I’ve never had a problem before. My radishes never bulb; they look long and skinny. Cherry Belle in particular. Could this be due to a lack of phosphorus? Your video mentions parsnips, carrots and beets. Also, I make a lot of chicken broth and save the bones to dehydrate. Then I put them in a blender and use this in my garden. Would you find a problem with using this instead of packaged bone meal?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Beth. I would say the problem is a lack of phosphorus in the soil so you might want to add some bonemeal or more of your dried, "pureed" chicken bones, which do supply phosphorus to the soil. Avoid giving any nitrogen fertilizer to the radish crop.

Susan since I’ve already seeded my beets & carrots can I just apply the bone meal over the soil w/o working it in?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Joyce. If you can sprinkle some in between the rows and then gently work it into the top 2", that would be ideal.

Hi Susan is it to late to add bonemeal when my carrots have already germinated
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Lynne. You could sprinkle some bonemeal in between the rows of carrots, and carefully mix it into the top 2" of soil.

Oh wow, do you know if that trick* works against onion fly too? (*the trick against the carrot fly) I have a hard time with those every year 😣

Hello, Judit. I wasn't sure so I did some research and unfortunately, they can fly high so this method probably won't work for them. Oftentimes, they will overwinter in the soil so it's always important to clean up any crop residue by the end of the season and also to grow crops that are susceptible to them in different areas of your garden. Another idea is to skip growing the crops they are attracted to for a year or two, although I realize that's not a very popular idea! Avoid using any animal manures in your soil since that will attract the adult flies. You might also try growing your susceptible crops under garden fleece or agricultural insect netting. And one last idea is to introduce some beneficial nematodes to your soil since you are having problems with this awful pest every year. The species that will target them are Heterorhabditis and Steinernema. I hope some of these ideas will help!

Hi Susan🎉 how many weeks before or after last frost do you sow these crops?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
I sowed them on Sunday, April 14, which is about 5 weeks before our last frost date. They are cool-season crops so they tolerate the cold without any problem.

Hello. How can you go back and add bone meal after the fact if there are already carrots leaves sprouting?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi there. You could carefully sprinkle some on the soil surface in between the rows of carrots and lightly work it in with a trowel or fork.

Thank you! Terrific! Would super phosphate work? I’ve even seen triple phosphate. Like many people, I tend to grab too much fertilizer thinking “more is better”. It’s important to match the fertilizer to the plant. Is Phosphate good for radishes and other root crops? Potatoes? Thank you again.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Mike. I would avoid superphosphate because it isn't organic. It contains sulfuric acid. Yup, more isn't better! I would just pick up some organic bonemeal from your garden center and leave it at that. And yes, bonemeal (phosphorus) would be good for radishes, potatoes, and other root crops. As I mentioned in my "fertilizer basics" video, phosphorus amendments also benefit plants that bloom and set fruit (i.e., tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash, melons and pumpkins).
