Garden writer Susan Mulvihill shares some great gardening tips for keeping insects off your broccoli crop or any other cabbage family crop. It can be hard to control aphids, cabbage worms and slugs but Susan has two easy methods for keeping them away from your plants. You'll learn how to use copper tape to repel slugs and how to use row cover to keep the aphids and cabbage worms from causing damage to your crops. From Susan's in the Garden, SusansintheGarden.com.

I am using this method this year. I found pool noodles, cut into 6inch pieces and slit down the side, to be an ideal way to hold the crop cover on hoops. It keeps it taught, and keeps the garden looking tidy. They pop off easily for tending to the plants, and are easy to replace when finished.🙂🌱

I love row covers, I have been using them for several years. I plant my seeds and seedlings that don't need to be pollinated together under the row covers like carrots, beets, radishes, chard, lettuce, spinach etc. For those that need to have pollinators, I use a row cover when I plant the seeds (like beans) or seedlings and then when the first blooms appear I take the covers off - this give the little vegs a chance in the garden.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Yep, that is exactly the right approach, Suzy!
@jeezumcrow8655
@jeezumcrow8655 3 месяца назад
If I’m not mistaken, I believe beans, tomatoes and peas are all self pollinating and produce male/female parts in each flower, so they don’t require insect pollinators.

I’m glad to see you use the black plastic pipe to attach the hoops. Too many times I see rebar sticking up and I freak out because if you ever fell those rods could go right through a person. I thought I seen a cabbage moth yesterday and was in and was hanging around the greenhouse. I thought oh no, they will lay eggs on my starts and I will still have them flying around inside my netting. It’s been so cold here since last Saturday we had 23*F then wind and those two things are not pleasant when you try and wrap fruit trees. I think I knocked more buds off then would have lost to freezing 🙄. I have so many different covers taking up space in my shed and definitely can’t go without bug netting! It’s 29*F this morning so far before sunrise and hope that this is the last of it for now. The next 10 days are to remain steady and warm. It was warmer during the winter 😅. Today is a big day to get some onions in and just did potatoes as we had a freeze last year 5/25 that killed things to the ground and hope to have later potatoes this year. That old adage of plant on Good Friday is too early.

This works! I learned the hard way my first year gardening. It’s so frustrating when you spend so much effort and get little to no yield because pests got the plants. I never use sprays on my cabbage, lettuce, chard and broccoli with this method. Thanks for the video!

Hi Susan. Are you growing broccoli all spring and summer under nets? I have tried kale and broccoli and i can keep the butterflies off them with nets but not the aphids. I think your nets are much finer.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Charles. Yes, I use agricultural insect netting for the entire season and it even keeps the aphids out. Here is what I'm referring to: www.gardenport.com/collections/insect-netting. You'll see how fine it is, because it has made all the difference for us.

Where did you get your insect cover from?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
Hi, Shirley. I included that in the video. It's from gardenport.com and here is a link to their insect netting section: www.gardenport.com/collections/insect-netting. We bought the 10' width to accommodate our 3' wide bed with the taller hoops on them, and folded under the excess so we wouldn't trip on it.

What about white flies? Does row cover work for them; they’re so small?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 3 месяца назад
To be honest, I've never had whiteflies on any vegetable crops. I would say they're about the size of an aphid, so either type of row cover should work (esp. floating row cover since there aren't any openings). If you've had problems with whiteflies in the past, that's a very good reason to rotate your crops and also to put a row cover over a susceptible planting as soon as you plant the seeds or seedlings.

Sorry to say that is correct. I have found 2 problems with it. 1) It is too fragile to use in a garden setting. 2) I've found that aphids can get through holes in it, and sometimes even cabbage butterflies or moths are able to lay eggs through it.
