Crinodendron hookerianum, a spectacular shrub/tree with unusual red, lantern shaped flowers. In this video I share my experience growing this plant and talk about the conditions it needs to grow well.
BTW Flowering will last until around August.

Thanks for the great videos Chris. One tip for acidifying soil is to add spent tea bags, this helped my camellia which was struggling with the slightly alkaline soil I had. Also adding a tea bag to a gallon watering can has the same effect when issued on acid loving plants.

I live in NE Scotland, climate not what you would call ‘tropical’! Planted one of these two years ago and growing and flowering just fine. Added ericaceous compost and feed it with Seaweed food regularly. Plants against a fence away from wind but facing south singers plenty of sun. Give it a go, nice shrub and good talking point in garden

Chile has some unusual endemics. I wonder if an anti-desiccant spray would help prevent that winter damage.

You are so right about this plant loving an acid soil. Ours had been in an alkali soil but just did not grow, it stayed alive though but just remained about 18" tall, I have now transferred it to a large pot with correct soil, hopefully it will recover well. Great Vid! thanks!

Wen we moved into this house we inherited a tall (about 12 foot) specimen, unfortunately it was growing through an old diseased apple tree. We had to emote the Apple and a couple of years later the Crinodendron died, I assume from the sudden extra exposure. Fortunately I managed to save a few seeds and currently have three seedlings. Two others I planted out too young have died. This was a good choice for the first of this new series. I’m looking forward to you featuring the Pseudopanax.

Planted one in my garden few years ago in Northumberland. Didn't seem to grow and flowers didn't really form. Moved it last year just a few feet to get more sun. Wrapped up over winter and now it's got about twenty flowers coming on. Are yellow on some leaves a problem or just natural occurrence?

Love, love this plant. First time I've ever seen it was at Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex about 15 years ago. I finally found 1 plant available from one of our local nurseries here in Portland, Oregon, USA five years ago and it's been growing in my small garden since then. I have never seen it again available for sale in nurseries or online here in the USA. I was wondering if you have any idea of how to propagate this beautiful plant.

@Micha Ginger Marie Thanks for the tip. What time of the year is best to try to propagate them, spring or fall?

Hi, I moved into my bungalow last August and found this plant in my garden and it is very high, could you give me any tips on how and when to prune it please?

Plymouth, nice part of the world. The last time I visited there was a Woolworths. I'd wait until after flowering before pruning and wouldn't take off too much. I've taken a few unwanted stems and dead material before but never a lot at once.

@@YorkshireKRIS Thank you for your reply, sadly Woolworths is not more :-( I will do as you say and cut a little off, but it is very tall, about 3 metres and is covered in those lovely flowers at the moment and has a large rose growing through it too which is also in bloom, a glorious splash of colour, I will try to put a photo on your FB page. Thank you Kris :-)

Hi Claudia, I have just seen your post. Here in the South of Ireland seed pods follow the flowers around October. When the seed pods begin to split, gather them. Then extract the seed and dry by the window. Sow them in a pot in Early Spring and they should grow easily..richard Fensome

Do you add any kind of mulch or fertiliser to your clerodendrum hookerianum
