I have a hunch when plant medicine like comfrey is banned for sale it's not for a safety reason, it's because pharmaceutical companies want the cash

Except all living thing came about from evolution by national selection. Any beneficial property's plants may have are purely by coincidence, because a lot of them are also deadly for us.

I purchased symphytum officinalis seeds off Amazon. I'm in North Florida, I plan to start a couple seeds right now (July 10, 2023). After researching germination rates, I was feeling a bit nervous to start these seeds. Your video has given me much needed confidence. Thank you!

The cold stratification is the key! Just be careful, they will spread by seed. I am not going to let my true comfrey flower for this reason.. Wellll maybe a few 😂

I'm in Montana, zone 5b. I ordered 3 crowns on ebay one year ago, mid summer. I think I ended up with 3 crowns and a piece of root. I put them in pots and kept them outdoors in the sun and watered. They sprouted and grew somewhat. In the early fall I planted them in the ground. By the following June they had grow into 4 bushy thick plants, 2-3' tall. Some of them I have to trim back because they're shading my other plants. (Note: plant them to the north, not the south of young fruit trees!) I can now start propagating them to put in other places. I did the same with a few Jerusalem Artichoke root cuttings and one hops root cutting from ebay. All are growing well, and the Jerusalem Artichokes are now 4 feet tall at the end of June.

Ive got some ebay root cuttings growing as well as some bocking 14 i bought elsewhere. I got bocking 4 from Coe's. Lots of flowers already. Best comfrey is growing alongside an autumn olive. Such a beautiful plant

I got JA off ebay as well. Some are coming up. I suspect the deer and rabbits will try to slow them down. Wasn't about to put those into my garden! I am going to try to use them to defeat the false milkweed I have that kills the monarchs

Nice informative video. I have planted root cuttings several times that I bought off the internet. 3-4" pcs. Most I planted in the ground, 2, I planted in containers. The container ones grew until my chickens jumped up about 3 feet on my stand and ate them, then knocked them over. Now, I am starting from seed today and in process of cold stratification. Some in paper towel and some in small tray I put in bottom of fridge. My wife has a greener thumb and she just retired, so here's hoping. Subbed, liked, and black belled. Hoping my little channel starts growing, but I don't put enough videos out and need to make them better. lol

A lot of the pieces I placed in the ground didn't come up for months. I thought they were duds 😂. Just remember the comfrey you start from seed can also produce it's own and take over. Easily solved by removing the flowers before they seed out

I try to not let my true comfrey go to seed but I've missed a few 😂. I just like knowing that Bocking 4 and 14 have sterile seeds so I can leave the flowers for the bees

One thing that seems to be missing for this video is a reason to grow the common comfrey. I understand that it's possible to do with a little extra work and some extra diligence is required to prevent spreading. Why not simply choose the course of least resistance?

I think I haven’t “hardened off” effectively- I get my root cuttings established well but then they don’t transition to outdoors. The stems get weak and leaves get pale

@@rosskellymcgarva3130 they need to harden off like any other plant. Once planted they are there forever.

Late February or March would be a good time. They'll get natural cold stratification. It doesn't seem as important when the plants drop seeds on their own. They pop up right away.

Those seeds are pretty easy to find online. You have to be careful because they produce viable seed and will spread crazy. As long as you cut the flowers off you're good.

@@FastGardeningMichiganany specific places to order true convert seeds? I ordered some from Amazon and it seems they misled people because it's really borage. Saw several sellers doing this. They sprouted and look nothing like Comfrey Bocking 4 or 14 leaves. The sprouts are round leaves not long and thin

Stratification only increases germination. Mine will self sow throughout the season but if just starting out, stratification will help to ensure the seeds you purchased grow

I believe I got mine from Strictly Medicinal, but I'd recommend buying root fragments or crowns of blocking 14 comfrey. It won't spread. Common comfrey will spread all over!

What is the average amount of time needed for the seeds to sprout after the 30 day cold stratification? 2 weeks has already gone by and my common comfrey seeds in saturated jiffy pellets are outside (usda 7a North Arkansas) ) in a slightly vented plastic Rubbermaid container with 90-100° temps. Hope thats enough info
