Sorry but those are not the Chocolate Stripes variety... Chocolate Stripes is a dark tomato with green stripes (look on Google) - and it is one of the best tomatoes I've ever tasted. But this highlights a problem I've been seeing more often: even trusted seed companies are mixing up and losing our classic and heirloom OP varieties. Which makes it as important as ever for seed savers to protect these varieties (which is ironic, because before the "enemy" was companies like Monsanto, but now it's the OP seed companies themselves). Anyway, it is exactly as you say: the rain diluted the flavour of your tomatoes (and caused the splitting, and fungal disease). I have a dry growing season, so my heirloom tomatoes don't split (because they only get the water I give them)... and watering plays a HUGE role in flavour. I've had Cherokee Purples and Brandywines literally taste like water because I accidentally gave the plants too much water... So perhaps think of growing your tomatoes in rows and put greenhouse plastic (or something similar) on as a 'ceiling' to keep the rain off the plants but still allow direct sunlight in from the side. You will probably also have less fungal disease if you can keep them dryer. A bit like this old video of a grandpa in Texas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6yljCs0444.html Anyway, that little girl is a boss with those sunglasses! lol

Damn I just checked the temperatures in Michigan and u guys have it really good, nothing really going over 30 degrees celsius. Where I live our tomato plants (not the fruits) are literally scorched from the insane heat every single day (35-40 celsius). 🙏
@jayduplessis7698
@jayduplessis7698 6 дней назад
We have weeks like that in our growing season too... 40% shade cloth (preferably white, because it reflects more heat, but black works too) and thick straw mulch is a game-changer. But be sure to remove the shade cloth when temperatures drop back into the 20s celsius (otherwise your tomatoes can lack sweetness).

I just love your philosophy on respecting nature. I try to do just the same! Today, I was out on national forest harvesting service berries & my hunting partner noticed a hornworm crossing the street....🤭 I'm sure there's a joke there! 🤣 We were curious to know what it could have been eating out there. We guessed nightshade plants. Anyway, it had to go thru several potholes full of water, so I decided to pick it up & carry it to the other side & place it in some grass. I swear it screamed as I grabbed it & picked it high into the air!😂 Then after I set it down gently in the grass, it thanked me. 🤣🤣🤣

Not every arborist uses the chip drop site. I called every tree service I could find in my area and have gotten a couple of loads that way. I’m trying to cover an area of over 20,000 sq ft. This is my initial cover, so I’m laying them down about 8” thick. I’m still getting some Bermuda poking through in some areas, but I just dig down to the dirt and clear it out. Once it’s all gone, I’ll only have to keep it outside the fence line. I’ve battled kudzu and won. Oh yeah, my first load of chips came from my local power company. They were cleaning up trees along my road and just stopped and asked what they were going to do with their load of chips.

I'm still fighting quack grass. This fall I'm doing 2 more layers of cardboard on existing chips and 12 inches of chips on that. Been waiting 4 months for chips so I'll be calling arborists.
