How to grow dahlias step by step (the Geoff & Heather way!)

This garden, which is in Stockport, UK, has been on BBC Gardeners World twice.
This video shows how Geoff and Heather, who have been growing dahlias for over 30 Years, start their 400 dahlias in their greenhouse, plant them out, keep them fertilised, maintain them throughout the summer, and, finally, how they lift and store them for the winter.
The video is divided into monthly sections.
Dahlias start flowering in July and will continue to flower until the first frost, so they have a very long flowering season.
Their flowers come in many sizes from the tiniest pompons to the giant dinner-plate varieties, there are several shapes, including the round ball shaped decorative varieties, the spiky cactus types, the delicately pretty waterlilies and the pin-cushion shaped anemones.
They come in every colour apart from blue, and there are dahlias that reach 9 feet / 3 metres tall, whilst others only reach 18 inches / 40 centimetres.
So there is a dahlia suitable for every garden, and they can even be grown in pots.
Geoff and Heather have been growing dahlias for many years and use the different shapes and sizes to help create a tiered effect in their garden in Cheshire. Together with salvias, fuchsias, and bedding plants they have managed to create a riot of summer colour.
Each September they open their garden to the public as part of the U.K. National Garden Scheme.
In this video, and the other videos in the series, they show you how they manage to do this, providing guidance on how to grow perfect dahlias.

A beautifully presented video full of information but without distracting chat and the worst intrusion of all, background music. This is a true gardeners' world, step by step through a year. Just as my grandpa encouraged me to learn in his greenhouse and magical garden. Thank you for this quiet, restorative video so full of interest and detail.

I have watched this video I think a million times and have told a million people to watch it also lol . It was my inspiration for my FIRST dahlia garden last yr 2017 and I shared the flowers with so many people for different reasons like funerals, weddings, gifts, etc. and they loved it. Learned a lot but I lost most of the tubers in the winter because I dried them out to much before storing. My bucket list would include visiting you and your garden to tell you personally how you have blessed my life when I needed it most. I am growing them again this yr. Hubby even made me a Texas Prepper Utube video greenhouse with added potting table because I liked yours so well and the house is way less messy. I need to know now how to start them better so I don't get so many shoots coming up. I break off all except one like I see in you pots. I hope that is the right thing to do. Also pruning them in the summer was hard for me to learn to do . I need help there if you can give me ideas. Thank-you so much for this video, please help me if you can. I know you must be very busy now.

That was very helpful. I'm growing my first dahlia (singular). I put a set of tubers in the ground for fun, but didn't think it was going to grow at all, as I had heard that Dahlias are quite difficult to even get to grow at all. Now it has just started showing above the ground. I got a bit panicky, realising I didn't know how to properly care for it. Your video has shown me all I need to know! I will refer to it througout the year. Lets hope I can keep mine alive and comfortable. Thank you so much and congratulations on the spectacular garden!

I usually restrict plants to a single stem, though for shorter varieties I sometimes allow two stems to grow. The shoots you remove can be used for cuttings if you like. The art is to to divide your field tubers to get several small "chicken leg" tubers, each with one or two shoots. Any tubers with no shoots can be discarded, they don't add anything. There are lots of ways to divide field tubers, I use scissors, knives, loppers, and on occasions I've used a chisel!
@nicnac.
@nicnac. 3 года назад
Geoff, how do you stand on the argument that tubers don't make as good plants as cuttings? Clearly this works for you, but do you find some loose their quality and colour? I follow your way but a few have lost their colour and vigor!
