Thanks for watching. And as per the description above (which I know no one ever reads haha), in the heat of excitement of mushroom extravaganza, I misspoke: I said the spawn contains the spores of the mushroom, but it's really the mycelium. That is the vegetative cells of the mushroom and they form mycorrhizal networks with the plant roots. The spores are the reproductive elements of a fungus, which would be found on the underside of the caps of the Stropharia!

Are they edible mushrooms? What else do you find foraging in the desert? I'm from the tropics, I've never been to a desert. I know there are reptiles including very venomous snakes. What else?

Fabulous!! I'm in the middle of raising Stropharia from liquid culture. Intention is, as a beekeeper to provide bees with what ever it is they forage off of Stropharia and other mushroom species mycelia. I've become a Paul Stamets fan, and also Tom Seeley Cornell. Total fun!!!! Oh, I've raised Oyster mushrooms on top of a bee hive last year!

The European ones supposedly form symbioses with either oaks or hazels. One in the PNW is supposed to be mycorrhizal on Douglas fir. You probably need a sow or trained dog to sniff them out--truffles fruit underground.

I recently (this spring) started educating myself on the edible varieties in my region. Morels are so popular, but there are many many others. I live in the southeast US at the bottom of the Appalachian Mnts where wild mushrooms grow plentifully, but I have yet to eat any that I’ve found myself because it can be dangerous/deadly (I’m no mycologist). I am fond of the way that you have cultivated these yourself! I’d love to see more!

Happy you did a vlog on mushrooms Summer! After reading Paul Stamets' work on the environmental and medical benefits of fungi, I've become real interested in studying the mushroom universe, even grow them on my balcony, or kitchen....the problem being that I would not be able to tell the beneficial types from those that could damage or destroy my plants, and I believe it takes a real expert to identify them...or should I assume that any spawn from commercial dealers is safe...anyway thank you for the educational video!

I really want to make lemonade out of a sucky lemon situation. I got hit hard by hurricane Sally and she took my roof and my favorite and only really big tree i had on my property. So I'm thinking of making a bunch of mushroom logs out of my 20 year old sawtooth oak. Lots of limbs from 6" to 2' across. I'm thinking about shiitake and pink oysters because they are tropical in nature. I would love to grow some wine caps but i think it will just be too hot here. In the summer it's not unusual to have 90s with 110 heat index because of our heavy humidity. Which is awesome for tropicals.

It's true. 1000's of our ancestors died in order to figure out what we can and cannot eat. Most of what we eat today comes from the America's and Asia. Native Americans and Ancient East Asians have contributed a lot to what we eat modern day.

@arrhazes8198
@arrhazes8198 3 года назад
Not all fungus species form mycorrhizae relationship with plant roots. Only the mycorrhizal fungi do. But still the other fungi are important for the Soil Food Web, decomposing organic material and providing food for almost everyone else. High fungi to bacteria ratio is important for higher/more complex plants such as trees. Which is why forests are dominated with these beneficial fungi.
@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 3 года назад
mycelium, not mycorhizae. Stropharia is a saprobe (decomposer, in this case mostly of cellulose). Mycorrhizae are a special case of mutualism between plant roots and the mycelia of particular types of fungi. Mycorhizal fungi are hard to cultivate because they are dependent on living plants, though for species of known associations, you probably could irrigate the spores into the root systems.

I'm more focused on soil nutrition this year, mycorrhizae, and mycelium. I'm also growing asparagus. I'm wondering if I built a mushroom bed on top of the asparagus roots will they both still thrive. I'm guessing the mycelium will break straw, and woodchips down to soil. While the asparagus will recieve the benefits, and grow healthier. Basically will mushrooms stop my perennial plants from growing, or will they help them.
