I am new owner of Forest Pansy Redbud tree, and this video was most helpful, from the location, to pests, water, and growth rate. I feel much more confident I can raise a healthy tree after watching, Thank you Jim Putnam!

There's a newer cultivar called "Burgundy Hearts" which supposedly keeps it purple foliage longer into the season than Forest Pansy.

Hi Jim. We’ve just bought and moved into a house that has an 8-10ft Redbud in a fairly enclosed courtyard. The foliage has just exploded and it’s already touching the walls of the courtyard on each side. Can I give it a good, hard pruning without killing it? Will I be able to control the size of it (ongoing) or is it simply the wrong tree for this space?

Hey Jim, good video. I j=have a pruning question. I bought my wife a forest pansy three years ago for mothers day. it was aprroximately 6' when i planted it. I haven't pruned it once yet and I reall want this tree to look its best after my neglect. Where would the best pplace to start to? It has a main trunk and there aren't many"u" shaped crotches. Maybe you could direct me to a video or just a few short tips. thank you

I never knew that about the branches. I have had a few branches die and thought the overall health of the tree was in danger. So smart. Now, I have peace of mind. Also, do you know why the leaves curl up? Mine tends to do that more when it's a bit hotter out. Any idea? Thank you!

I have a beautiful redbud I planted last year. It has had amazing growth with beautiful dark purple leaves. This week all of the leaves are cupping and turning brown. Would this be Wilt? I'm scared I'm going to lose my tree. It is planted in full sun. I swear the tag said full sun when I planted it last year.

Hello Jim, we have a small lot in Charlotte NC and my husband wants to plant a Redbud. He would like to obtain the Flamethrower Redbud that we saw in one of your shows. Please let us know if you can do another show? Thanks Marion

Hi Jim, thank you for the very helpful video! We planted a forest pansy in june. It's such a beautiful tree! Some of the leaves are now browning. Overall, the tree appears to be very droopy. We were watering twice weekly for the first month. Our area is getting a couple of inches of rain weekly so we are now no longer watering. Should we be concerned?

I'm about to plant a five-foot tall Forest Pansy Redbud (cercis canadensis occidentalis) ) in a semi-sunny spot just outside the shade of a Douglas fir. It wil get afternoon shade (evening shade in summer). I understand the redbud likes alkaline soil so I will add lime and soil conditioner to the soil before I plant it (it is very rootbound and stressed). I wil water it generously during the summer months. My concern is that there is a network of roots from the big old Douglas fir under the soil. I can't find any information about the root pattern of the redbud. Does it need deep soil or will it spread its roots out horizontally like the branches? Our soil in the maritime Northwest (Washington coast) is largely glacial till so we use a lot of soil amendments. And individual fencing to keep the deer from eating it. I would appreciate any advice. It was an expensive investment and I want it to be happy! Thank you!

I just bought two hearts of gold redbuds this morning. Are the recommendations for those about the same as the Forest Pansy?

I don't have a lot of experience with that one, but I would guess that a lot of sun would fry those leaves by late summer. Maybe avoid a lot of midday sun on it

We have a lot of red buds in our yard because of the sees pods. What can we do to the trees so they don't produce so many seed pods that blow everywhere and there for we have a lot of trees
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 лет назад
+Sharon Reichert This particular variety doesn't produce the seeds. It is the native ones that do that. The only way to stop that is to remove them.
