Hi Gary, another great video. I find that mushroom trays are a perfect size for growing onions. I have both Creole White bulbing onions and Red Beard bunching onions sprouted in four containers. Voles tunneling in the yard, made me rethink about where to plant them. Originally they were going to be planted in my former pepper bed, but there is no hardware cloth to protect them from the voles. I've learned the hard way that voles cannot resist the smell of onions. So instead, they will be planted in my garlic bed, and I will use my former pepper bed for carrots, beetroot, lettuce, and kohlrabi. My new raised beds will have hardware cloth in place before I fill them. Eventually, I'll get to the raised beds that don't have hardware cloth as they become a problem. Rocks lining the bottom of the beds is also a good deterrent for voles. I have crushed gravel lining the bottom of four raised beds. Voles don't bother them.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Unfortunately, I live in rattlesnake country with three types of rattlesnakes, the Eastern Diamondback being the most common. There is a pond on the property, so cottonmouths are abundant too. There are also copperheads and the occasional coral snakes. The venomous snakes outnumber the nonvenomous snakes. I don't mind the nonvenomous species, but the brown watersnake can be very aggressive.

When I give my onion seedlings a haircut, I plan to put the greens into an omelet LOL. I enjoy growing alliums from seed, I am good enough at it for it to be worthwhile, but every year 1 or 2 varieties I'm trying to grow don't do well for me. 2024 1 of my garden goals is to get my Zebrune shallots to produce bulbs instead of starting off very good & then fizzling out by summer.

When I’m ready to transplant in the garden I swish the entire clump in a pail of water to remove the dirt while still holding the tops. Much easier to pull apart without damaging the roots.

Oh man, great timing on this Gary thank you. I'm on round 2 of onions, the first few packs grew then died after a week or two. I had those in seedling mix & did lightly fertilize and put under light but this time I used potting soil and they'll probably do better as a result. I could have used your onion top trimmings in my dinner tonight.🥳 I still have a few potatoes so a baked potato 🥔 is on tap.👍🏻

Hi there, hoping for some help. My onions grow slower than yours seem to, so they are still stringy at 8 weeks. How can I get them to become thicker like yours if the goal is to plant them out at 8 weeks after hardening. I'm a second year beginner and live in Portland, Oregon, zone 9a, LFD March 23. Please keep the info videos going, I've watched almost all of them.... Lol okay maybe 1/4. And if you need any more info let me know, I appreciate the help!

Did u fertilizer them at all with anything during their time indoors. I’ve been told to give lots of Nitrogen and then when transplanted give more P & K. Then I’m told give lots of Phosphorus to concentrate on root growth, then once transplanted to give lots of Nitrogen. I’d sure like to get an onion bigger than a golf ball😢🤷‍♀️

I was planning on putting mine in next week since it will be warm which would be about 6 weeks under lights. Is that too soon? Should I wait another week or two? Would like to get them in when the weather is nice. Also, mine are in cells with one or two per cell.
