Here's a tip for people that don't know. I work for Starbucks and if you call us, we will save our grounds for your garden form you to pick up. We usually save them from our cold brew process. We get a ton of grounds from brewing our cold brew.

For anyone who doesn't know: take a whole pineapple with you to the beach or out on the boat. Towards the hottest part of the day, right when you come out of the water and still have that ocean taste in your mouth; cut up and eat that fresh pineapple. It will be one of the most delicious things you will ever eat. Learned this on my first dive.

I water root my pineapples and plant in a big pot by my south facing garage. I also plant them in raised mounded ground. It doesn’t matter so much the soil, as long as it drains. Fertilize with slow release, coffee grounds, egg shell. Keep on the sunny side.

My great grandparents grew pines on Elliotts Key in the 1880’s. I grew up growing pines in Coconut Grove in the fifties. You can twist off the fruit from the plant and also the head from the fruit. I live in Gainesville now and grow them in cloth pots so I can move them out of seasonal torrential rain and seasonal freezes. I also add cut up banana peels, coffee grounds and egg shells for jacking up the soil. If you leave the fruit on the plant after it gets yellow and let it turn slightly bronze on the bottle, the sugar turns to alcohol. Yummy taste. You didn’t mention pulling the lower leaves off the heads to expose the baby roots and putting in water for a week. Also, the core has the most nutrition.I use them in my nutritional shakes. Great video, thank you.

Twisting the top of the pineapple is the preferred way to remove its top instead of cutting it off. Pineapples are one of the few fruits that do not continue to ripen (develop sweetness) after it is picked, so leaving it to completely turn yellow on the plant is ideal in terms of its sugar content.
@johnstamos4629
@johnstamos4629 Год назад
oh yeah mine get FULLY golden before its picked and ONE will make the whole house smell like pineapple!
@src4409
@src4409 Год назад
Yes, they do ripen after being cut from the plant. Leave them on your counter on its side. Turn it 1/4 turn every day for about 4 or 5 days. It will turn yellow on your counter. This is what I do every time I buy a store bought pineapple.
@johnstamos4629
@johnstamos4629 Год назад
then that is color, NOT flavor. and neither will fully develop. it's like that with all fruit.
@antonioforestgardens697
@antonioforestgardens697 Год назад
Lets not forget pineapples are the highest in enzymatic activity, digestively speaking, and those enzymes are best expressed in under ripe green fruit. If you're serious, wash an under ripe green pineapple, blend or juice with the skin on (zero waste), and serve over a block of ice, mixed fifty /fifty with freshly pressed wheatgrass juice. This will #1 knock your socks off and #2 cure melanoma and basocelluar cancers. I am living proof.

Like the Video! 👍 I did learn a few things about the plant itself. Only once, did I let a plant continue to grow, after harvest. It did grow another pineapple off the side. I didn't know about twisting that sucker off. I will have to try that method. I have been growing pineapples for a lot of years in Wyoming. Keep 3 or 4 growing at all times. Would have more if I had more windows. Mine never get very big though. But are superb tasting over store bought. I don't quite have as long of direct sunlight. Lot of the time, not good temp's. I did try grow lights. But it didn't really seem to help. I just twist my crown off by hand. Then pull off several rows of leaves and dry. Never had a plant fail to grow. I never did repot my plants. Just using about a 2-1/2 gallon pot. What fits in the window. I will have to try your pot mix ratio. Wasn't much info. when I started growing, years back. I will also have to try and repot to a bigger pot next time around. Have a golf ball sized cutie rising now. Thanks for the video!

Yes, definately keep the gardening channel open. Great teaching pace - not too slow or too fast.

Gloves, got 35 pineapples coming in containers in backyard. I use miracle grow. The soil is very moist. I use a variation of Leon’s grow pot, blood meal and phosphorous. I start the tops in a plastic container to grow roots and then put in 5 gal grow pot. Blowing my wife’s mind. Like all your info.

Mid-north Florida. Grew pineapples several years ago, they are SO sweet when they ripen on the plant!
