I'm 54 years old and have never grown anything in my life. With Fall last year, I began attempting to grow. I have to do everything in containers. So far, I have peas, carrots, tomatoes, nasturtium, lemon balm, lettuce, and yarrow coming up. I've not enjoyed the fruits of my labor as of yet, but I'm praying God will bless the work.
I always had a black thumb all my life! My husband teased me that i killed plastic plants and flowers. Well i started a small garden. I've had failures but have many more successes! I learn something everytime i plant anything. This year I'm trying container gardening in 5 gallon buckets as I'm getting older and tilling up the soil is getting harder for me. I'll never grow enough to support me but i can grow enough to supplement myself and to can some things up! And i can dehydrate any extras to add to different dishes to up the nutritional value!
Gardening, like chickens, sure can be a calming adventure. It has to be one of the best stress reducers and exercise there is. By the way Christa, your Grandmother and the Lord must surely be proud of your gardening, sharing of ideas and encouragement.
I agree with you that it reduces stress. When I just can't figure something out or am begging God to speak to me and He is choosing to wait on the answer, the garden is the best place to busy myself waiting for everything to sort out.
I bought a hydroponic garden last year and am just amazed at what you can grow with just water and nutrients. I have grown Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, mini bell peppers, jalepenos, and herbs.. I was extremely disappointed with my outdoor container garden last year as North Texas had a very hot long summer.. nothing I planted truly produced anything. The hydroponic garden helped in encouraging me to try again and now I feel like I can try to grow anything 😊.
Adding things to the soil such as coffee grounds, broken egg shells, compost from grass cuttings and leaves makes sense. Most soil problems in the American south are related to large sacrificial farming methods to grow cotton and rice. Those two crops take a lot from all the soil matter. I read a report from the US Department of Agriculture, written in 1937. Said that most of the fertile top soil was blown away during the dust bowl of the 1930's. Many farmers are "No Till" planting today to prevent soil loss.

When I was younger my mom and dad had a garden . They didn’t really teach us anything but I do remember growing a peach tree from a peach! when covid came, I had to stop working so I got into gardening on my two by four patio! I plant mostly in pots and till this day, I’m still learning. This year I finally didn’t kill mint! That’s right, I killed mint, not once but twice! Yet I didn’t give up!everything I grow is edible and medicinal! Moral of this story, if I can do it, so can you!

Failing is apart of growing pains, and its nothing like connecting to mother earth and all she has to offer! Also, its good to give yourself permission to fail, because after all you are only human people!

I look forward to our Master Gardeners Plant Sale here in the Smokies every year...prefer to buy starts to flowers, herbs & veggies there rather than from the big box stores because they're grown locally. I also try to buy only plants that will be a food source ... it's important to remember to grow flowers for the pollinators! Otherwise some of the vegetables will bloom but not produce food. Learned that the hard way! I grow everything in pots...works great!
Hi Christa! It's Vonnie from Rory's last year! Just wanted to thank you for tipping me off on the edibility of maple spinners! I regret to admit that they have a tendency to sprout everywhere here so the last thing I would do is plant them...but eat them? Sure! And I might even give grinding them into flour a try too. Btw...I doubled my maple syrup output this year by buying an evaporator pan and collecting 80 gallons of sap! That yielded 2 gallons of beautiful maple syrup! Inasmuch as I'm not making a trip to TN this year, I'll have to send you a jug through USPS. Btw, after giving my garden it's 7th season Sabbath rest last year, it's full on growing this year! And I'm starting new methods never tried before, including Kratky method hydroponics and various mushrooms! I will be doing straw bales, raised beds, in ground and containers along with the hydroponics, which are both indoors and out. I just want to be able to know I can grow food inside in case of imminent trouble. 😉 I've also set up an arched cattle panel greenhouse/rain cover too! Growing more food than will feed an army, but that's ok! Since it's just me here, I kind of reverse tithe, meaning I only keep a tenth and give away the 90%! 😊 That said, I will send you off a bottle of Vonnie's 2023 Eph 3:20 Central Noo Yawk Maple Syrup right away! Thank you for this heartwarming video✨this is what I do & teach my family. Just put a seed in dirt & water it. THM will take care of the rest 😉 I eat lots of spring onions- cut off the root end, put it in soil on my windowsill keep it good & moist..I eventually take them outside now that frost is for the most part over. I got soooo many spring onions recycling!! 😊 Love & Blessings to all!!💕✨
Yes! Over plant! I live in NE Alabama and never know what the weather will do, so I plant my cold crop for spring, but also add some warm crop. This way I should at least get something. Allot of times it gets hot fast and the cold crop goes to seed... but then I have the back up season plants growing. BTW, if things go to seed, save seeds, and or you can eat most plants when they're not fully grown out.
Thank you that was really nice...some yrs ago I watched a video of how to make homemade apple cider vinegar it turned out great/ I made 5 gallons just from peels and cores... I am trying this yr to plant just like your talking about. just plant more seeds 🙂 I got the coffee grounds, eggs shells and ash, I also save banana peals

Love this video! My mother had a green thumb but I certainly do not! That being said I have several grow bags on my tiny apartment balcony and this year have tomatoes, onions, peppers and cucumbers planted in them. Fingers crossed and prayers ascending! I also have a number of herbs growing and am VERY proud to say they were all from seeds. I think the danger of frost is finally over for me (I say prayerfully since I've had to cover them several times already). Ok God, your turn!
I grew an apple tree (from store brought )with my son when he was a little just for fun. Over 10 years later the apple tree started to produce fruits and they tasted so good.
During WWII, starving people in Russia grew potatoes from the peelings spread on the soil. If it has an 'eye' it will grow and you could do the same. Just don't bury it as the starch in the thin peeling wont be enough to sustain it until the shoot reaches the surface. A very thin layer of compost on top and grown in a seed tray in a warmish place in your house in the light with a loose transparent cover over it and kept moist a potato plant will grow.
I have been following you for years and I wanted to tell you that you are such an inspiration to so many. All though I can only speak for myself, I am sure many would agree, I love the person you are. You show us and teach us so many valuable pieces of knowledge which is such a blessing in of itself. Hey Christa! Thanks for your great tips on just everything! 😃🙏🏻. I wanted to just mention that if anyone has ever had problems with blossom end rot on tomatoes, calcium is the answer. I buy a cheap bottle of calcium pills from the pharmacy and throw one in the hole I dig for tomato plants. But- the calcium in the egg shells will probably do the same thing so thanks for that one! I just found this, I saw a post on Prepsteaders of it but I didn't know it was also a video. I have some oranges trees from oranges I found out on the side of the street out in front of my house last summer, I first only got them to see what the seed would give me but then I had the Idea to juice then I figure it was probably ok since they weren't damaged or cut open or anything and they were the sweetest oranges I ever tasted also I since have discovered that most citrus is polyembryonic and will grow true from seed and at least some will give you fruit in as little as 2 to 3 years. Some mango varieties are also polyembryonic but the ones I have seen that are the seed looked different than the one you showed also they are supposed to give you more than one plant from the seed but the key limes I have started not all of them have given me more than one at least one of them gave me at least 4. Right now I am trying to concentrate of energy, I have at least a couple hundred gallons of rain water bottled up , I can boil it if I need to use it for potable water and I always filter it through a coffee filter, I don't have any gutters up just 5 gallon buckets. @@PREPSTEADERS last year I had cherry tomatoes more than I could count, I had them planted everywhere. I like to try different things I even planted potatoes in a Rubbermaid tote, Loads of fun .
Last year I was given a message that was put on my heart by God. I was informed I need to buy a respirator because breathing was going to be very difficult and serious. Do you have any information on respirators? Would you please do a video on them? I have looked at so many I've now confused about what to get. I absolutely love your idea and covert gardening. Tea leaves can serve the same way as coffee grounds and soot from the chimney can help in the garden but be careful not to put on the plants when fresh.
What a great video, bless you for the encouragement- thanks! Another use for egg shells is at the base of plants helps with slugs- their soft bodies do not like to slither over the sharp edges of the shells.

Brown thumb? My whole body is brown😄. Im getting older and Ive been interested in starting a raised garden. I live in the dessert so the soil is very sandy lots of fruit trees around here tho, plus no one has grass in my neighborhood. I Just wanted to try a few plants because I live alone. I have bad soil. My neighbor is a master gardener and verified with their own experiment. One area of the garden was native soil with typical amendments. Next to that the soil had been replaced deeply with a commercially sold soil from a nursery. The exact same plants were grown in both areas and the difference was huge. Plus I am fighting fire ants again this year, they're even in my compost pile. The products sold that are garden safe are just not effective and are very expensive. I don't know what to do about this. Then I have invasive blackberries that I dig up repeatedly, along with a poisonous thorny nightshade plant that propagates by an extremely deep root system as well as producing cherry tomato looking fruits. So it's not necessarily that I have a brown thumb. It's that I am up against many difficult, and almost impossible to control situations. I've laid thick black plastic and layers of cardboard after driving myself crazy trying to dig up some of those weeds. They just come up through whatever I laid over them.

The way they chlorinate water now, most of the time, is with a molecule that does not evaporate. The only way to remove it is through filtration. UV-C or a charcoal filter will both work. I forget the names of the chlorination methods.
I finally learned after 2 years of trial and error….nitrogen produces great leafy greens…phosphorus/potassium helps roots ( potatoes, carrots, beets) all this time-my potato, carrot, beet tops would look amazing-with the smallest ever root veggie at the end! NOW I KNOW!!!! Not so much nitrogen!!! 😀
Everyone with a “green thumb” has killed more plants than had grow amazingly. Mostly because they just tried things and learned from the result. After gardening for the last 40 years I still can’t get carrots or radishes to do well. So I keep trying them, but depend on things I can grow well. Last year was hard for everyone, new or accomplished, in my area. Just learn from what you grow (or don’t), and don’t give up. You will get there.
You are so right, Suz! Some years are extra difficult, but I learn a million life lessons through the process of growing things. I know I will never be a "Master" gardener, but always a Victory gardener when something new is learned and something new springs to life! Thank you for sharing your comment!
I've never been able to grow decent radishes here in upstate NY until last year when I showed Pink Beauties in fall instead of spring. The spring ones always seem to bolt and never form nice round roots, but last year's fall radishes were awesome and I harvested right up til first frost in mid-Oct. Maybe try changing your growing season. No advice on carrots. I can't grow them either! 😂
