Growing Calla Lilies Lily from Seed- From Collected Saved Calla Lily Seeds
This was by far one of the funniest growing experiences.. Growing calla lilies from seed is relatively easy to do... and I challenge you all to do so if you ever get the chance..
Germinating the calla lily seeds took about 22 days but the germination rate was excellent. Using the paper towel method lets you know exactly what germinates , so there is no guessing of germination..
Planting the calla lily seeds with the root facing down in the soil.. Growing on a moist but not over wet situation..
They seem very easy to take care of indoors..
Make sure and check out my video pictures of the calla lilies.. since this video got a tad long I decided to make a separate video on the photos of the from seed to seeing the growth, the changes in size .. of the lilies.. #dianemummgardenvideos

I just found my calla lily had seeds. So it help me a lot I live in Zanesville Ohio. I keep them in my garage during the winter not much water in the winter very little. The first year I was surprised they come up this year I had so many was getting to many in the pot so am taking a chance so I put them in another pot. They looked like a tube. I had about 15 or more. Was the first I every saw one that was in pot lots of roots. Will try to save the seeds. Note: am 87 years & not good at E mails.

Hello, I live in Texas. I purchased a Calla Lily, 7 years ago and it was about 6 inches tall. When I bought it, I didn't even know what it was or supposed to look like when grown fully. I just knew i like the big leaves with white spots and looked nice. I planted it in the garden in the back yard in 2013. Since then it has grown back every year with more stalks and and taller but it never bloomed until now (2020) and the bloody thing is about 3 feet tall! Its absolutely gorgeous with its huge bright yellow flowers. I had no clue the thing was supposed to bloom! Who knew?

I live in upstate Ny (zone 5). I am NOT a grower, or a farmer, or anything ... I just love callas, and my husband buys them for me whenever they are available here. Well, I had a few plants that were "expired". they were done growing in the house and I would normally throw the plant out. lol, the "expired" plant blew into our creek. They have grown there repeatedly now for the last 5 years! I never bring them up or bring them in over our tough NY winters. The latest plants he bought me seeded! I never saw that before. I stumbled across Bernard's video, and have harvested the seeds (first time!), and followed your instruction to try to grow them on my own. (Boy, will that save my hubby some money, lol). wish me luck, and TYSM for the education!!!

Hi Thanks for your video. I live in zone 7a and about two years ago we planted a multi colored Calla lily with spotted leaves that had flowers. We had a previous one with beautiful black flowers but the squirrels I feed dug em up to eat 🤬.. Anyway, this time I planted it two inches deeper and last year it had one huge flower that was red-ish purple and this year two different colored flowers and the plant is about four feet tall if not four and a half and the flowers last a few months. Last year I made the mistake of lightly tying the flower to a dried stalk to keep it from drooping and now I've learned that the flower droops to let the seeds dry out and eventually the seeds fall to the ground. By keeping the flower upright all the seeds became molded. I had been looking on-line for a solution to keeping the ground around the bulbs warm so not to disturb the plant and I came across Ground Warming rods that use very little electricity so I plan on ordering a few. Last year I had used a frost king electrical pipe warmer and they use about one watt of electricity per foot and it was about ten feet in length so ten watts and it worked along with a small garage can placed upside down over the plant. Suggestion I've watched a few RU-vid videos on starting seeds using the paper towel with zip lock bags method and I noticed you soak the paper towel now from what I've seen most use about one or two pump sprays of water and then place the seeds and paper towel in the bag as the bag is sealed up the water won't evaporate. I was afraid your seeds might have molded but they didn't and thats great. Again Thank you for the video it was super appreciated. Eddie J.

Hi Diane, I live in Bloomfield N.Y. and about 4 years ago a friend gave me a few white calla Lily bulbs. She told me to bring them in for the fall and winter months, so I did. I gave my sister the ones I took out. I must have left something in the soil because every year The Beautiful Green leaves with the white dots show up. This year It grew to about 2 1/2 feet high and produced 2 lilies for the first time. Each year I have been cutting them to the soil level , covering them with a bit more soil. Now I see the flowers have the seed pods inside. My Area is gardening zone 5b and 6a , and still they come back every year. I Love this video because i didn't quite know what to do with the seeds, I saw a your friend Burts video first about the seed separation and how to get the seeds. and your video was so helpful for the rest. The seed pods are still green and I have set them on cardboard and dry paper towel to dry them before i will be extracting the seeds . I find it odd that the one that kept growing in this climate has come back every year. Now i have 2 large green seed pods !! So excited. Thank you !! Happy Gardening :)

I cut off the seed pods and separate the seeds when a little dried. Then I spread them in the gardens. I don’t bury deep so no real digging. They come up next year. Some green solid leaves and some white spotted leaves. Sometimes they bloom year one and some times year three but the plant is nice white waiting for a bloom. They are all white flowers. I don’t know what to say, no work at all. I dunno. I have about 70 blooming. I live in northern CA but no snow. Presently I have a couple hundred seeds so I’m going for it! Lol

I have been growing Calla Lillie's in AZ for 13 years (same plant) they winter outside (we are zone 8), they need partial shade in the middle of summer. I got my first seed pods last year, picked them off and let them dry out in the house, air is dry here. My seeds are smaller than yours. I am going to try to grow the seeds for the first time too. Thanks for the video, it will be a big help!

It has come up and blossomed every year since. I have also grown the white flowered variegated green leaf variety from seed and they all came true to the mother plant.

Great video. I'm in Ohio and tried some seeds. I actually cut into the seeds so the water gets inside the seeds. It will germinate them in just a few days. I then soaked mine in water for 2 days them the wet paper towel method. Mine flowered the first year. 2 seeds gave me 19 bulbs for the following year. I'm in Ohio, zone 6a so I have to lift the bulbs before winter too.

I live in Zone 10, and the coldest it ever gets around here is about the low-30s, but that's even rare. Winter temps in my area are around 40 degrees-ish. My mom's Calla Lilies have been in the ground for years now, and they survive the winter just fine. They're very hardy, & go thru dormant stages where they wilt and thin out for a while, then go right back to gaining density, and tend to flourish with very little care. If you want to divide the plant, they're resistant to transplant shock.

I was delighted to see I have one huge Yellow and two beautiful red. This is my first year to get the seed pods. Your video was the perfect length to show me how to germinate my seeds. also found a video on how to remove the seeds while still soft, easier to remove. Cant wait to try.it took 3 mos roughly right?

Like you they would have to be lifted here for the winter. I grew them once in pots but the corms/roots rotted over the winter. I guess a lot of lilies take a while to bloom from seed. I have Canada Lilly -Lilium canadense, native wild flower, which was grown from seed and it bloomed last year for the first time, took 5 years. Just breaking through the soil now I only got one bloom last year and no seed pod hope I get seed this year I want to try starting more so I can naturalize them.

I live in Upstate NY and I have 2 VERY large Spotted Calla Lily groups. I say groups bc I planted a single bulb I purchased from Lowe's, it developed some kind of spore pouch due to the weed killing mulch I had and I thought it died. 3 YEARS later I have 2 separate ares with 37+ stems in each group that grow to about 4ft tall! I do NOT prune them or bring them inside. Gardening experts are shocked that not only do they survive the bipolar NY weather with almost no consistant sunshine but it multipled they way it did! The oddest part is that the other area they showed up in was NOWHERE near the original planting site! I wish I could attach photos.

I read that the white callas only really like water and can with stand a lot of water but the colored ones are more prone to drought and do better in sun and not as much water. Don't know if this is planting them from seed or bulbs. I bought three plants this past spring: one white, one pink and a deep purple color. They all did well and now the flowers remaining are starting to grow the seed pods inside of them. I'm going to wait till they get bigger before harvesting them but I am going to try to grow some from seed and living in WV (not sure what zone that is) I'm going to dig up the bulbs and store them inside through the winter. Thanks for the video! I'm learning!! :)

Wow this was very interesting. I do not mind long videos...it is like visiting with a friend & learning something new. I just recently did a video on repotting a little plant I got in Utah last summer & brought it back home with me. The little tag got lost & I forgot what the plant was. Well I repotted it & I do believe (with others help) I remebered it was Calla Lily? Is this the same as "Peace" Lily? The ones that they grow with the Beta Fish in a glass vase? My plant is doing great. ~RedBerry

I've planted the seeds for the first time this year. I've got them from my adult Calla Lily, which has orange flowers and leaves with white dots. The sprouts are still young (1 leaf), so it's hard to tell how they will look like when adults. But for now the leaves has no dots. I've also seen that in the vase of the adult Calla this year there are new sprouts without the dotted leaves (maybe it has made new rhizomes, but why different?), together with the old ones with dots. This has made me wonder if the Calla lilies that I will obtain from the seeds will ever look like the adult one. Will they keep the same type of leaves and the same flowers?

When is the best period to start the seeding and planting? i collected seeds last summer, and I have them in a cool dry location.

not sure of your area, but just read the packets it tells you how many weeks to start before your last frost in your area, that is if you have frost..:)

Hi! I got three out of four to germinate. I have 1/2 inch white sprout. I am ready to put into soil. Do I plant with the white sprout up or pointing down in the soil???
@MrbigCritic
@MrbigCritic 5 лет назад
in general, white side down. when seeds germinate, usually the root (white) will breach first, followed by the first leaves (which will be green)

Can we use tissue paper instead of paper towel
@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos Год назад
you can try but it is much thinner and would probably tear easily

I tried the paper towel method and they molded. What did I do wrong?

Did the seeds have to go through a stratification period of some sort? Or can you just plant them directly after harvest?
@dianemummvideos

I did not do any stratification on these seeds..

I was only able to harvest 30 seeds, but I will gladly send you 6 if you send me your address. I have no idea which colors they will be. kinda pot luck lol. I plan to germinate them soon ( probably around thanksgiving), so I hope to hear from you by then

now tell me diane, when you put the cover over them, you don't make a hole or anything in the cover? I thought they needed a little air? the two little greenhouses I bought in lowes had little vents that you could adjust how much air flow.....but I see that you just cover? no air?
@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos 10 лет назад
some plants need ventilation but some plants love humidity... this is only for a bit then the cover comes off for good it is to keep them moist and to get them rooted down .. once you take the cover off they tend to dry out faster, but what you have will work fine.. good seeing you here..:)
