In this video, I show you how to grow lettuce from seed indoors, and harvest it in just one month! You can use this lettuce to make your own fresh, organic salads free of pesticides. It's so easy anyone can do it, just follow my steps and you'll be eating homegrown salads in no time.
This was my first time ever growing lettuce from seed indoors. Growing lettuce indoors under lights is actually really cool, and it allows you to be more self-sufficient in the winter even when it's much too cold outside to grow anything. I was surprised how easy it was to grow lettuce indoors from seed. It took very little effort and I was rewarded at lettuce harvest time. If you're wondering how to grow lettuce at home, follow my easy guide and you'll be harvesting fresh organic lettuce in no time!

Same here.Guess they dont need much rootspace and nutrients..Point to note,it might not work if there isnt a water tray underneath coz the soil would dry up from the elements as well as uptake from the plants.Personaly,I usually transplant them at the same size as his are at day 19

Great to see a video on this. I was curious if a cell tray would work for lettuce and it looks like you got some decent sized plants. You can also use 3" nursery pots with the same kind of tray and dome, which should reduce root bind and improve yields from each plant compared to the cell tray. From my experience, it can also be easier to work with single pots than a whole cell tray. I'd also recommend against tap water, chlorine can be pretty rough on roots and leaves; distilled or filtered is best, but, at the very least, allow tap water to sit open for a time so most of the chlorine evaporates.
@lucasgrowsbestyt
@lucasgrowsbestyt 4 года назад
Thanks Kirby! This was just a little experiment using mostly stuff I had on hand. It could definitely be done better, I agree :) I have heard of tap water being not the best for plants, I just don't have a good source of distilled/filtered water that is inexpensive. Allowing it to sit to allow the chlorine to evaporate is something I have heard and should definitely try. It would be interesting to do a trial between "pure" water and tap water.
@knmore
@knmore 4 года назад
That's totally fair! It's great when you can do stuff like this with what you already have. I'm sure most gardeners have a seed tray or two that sit empty for most of the winter months and this is a great way to get some more use out of them! With regards to chlorine, there are lots of different solutions for the home gardener, though I agree most of them aren't the cheapest and might not work for everyone, as you mentioned. From my perspective, the easiest solution is adding in a reservoir, like a bucket, where you can let your water settle; this is also a great place to do any other water treatments or add plant foods (especially if your reservoir is graduated and you know your ratios). One important thing about using a reservoir, though, is that you want to protect its contents from as much light as possible, especially if you are using it to dose any plant foods; light encourages algae, which can steal nutrients from your plants, so use an opaque container or shroud it in something lightproof. I think this is a really easy and cheap step that, while it may be tough to justify when tap water can work in soil, the benefits for your plants, their growth cycles and eventual yields will noticeably outweigh the efforts. If you are curious of the effects of chlorine on your plants, an easy test is to uproot a couple plants and place them directly into some containers with the different waters. Though there are some other variables at play (oxygenation, evaporation, etc), over time, the roots in the chlorinated water will likely rot. Chlorine is a big topic in hydroponic gardening, and deep water culture in particular, where water is effectively the growth medium, so there's lots of info on those kinds of forums/blogs about water chemistry in gardening.

Hi Mr. Lucas. I am writing this because I also am planting lettuce since last month. I failed my first batch of seedling and then I started again last week. I have a week and few days old baby lettuces just outside our window. I would like to ask if do you keep your lights on 24/7? And every when do you fill the tray under your seedling tray with water? Thank you for the inputs😊

If I remember correctly I had my lights on for 14 hours per day, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. I only filled the tray with water when the seedling tray was light, meaning that it did not contain much water. Good luck with your lettuce!

Nice video! I'm actually thinking of doing something similar but I'm going to change it up a bit. The time to maturity for butter crunch lettuce is actually 65 days, so I'm planning on using 65 tin cans that I've been saving up and planting one seed per day. In 65 days I should have a continual harvest of lettuce year round as long as I keep planting one a seed a day in a tin can. When the plants get bigger I'll be able to give the mature plants more room by moving the tin cans further apart. I'm using grow lights on a wire rack in my living room LOL.

@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures Did your cans have drainage holes or another method to prevent overwatering and root rot? Did you plant 2-3 seeds per can or just 1. Bad seed or Good seed, you should Always expect issues during germination. Overseeding is one of the few ways to mitigate the issue. As well as transplanting like shown in the video. If one cell has 3 growing you can seperate those into 3 seperate cans. Thus the ones that didn't grow in those cans are Mitigated by the transplanted ones. I know it's been a while since your post but it would be interesting to know these informations and updates to how it went.

Oh no! For lettuce, I wouldn't typically recommend a mat, but you had good germination so that's not an issue. Is the mold affecting the seedlings or do they still look healthy? You can try lightly dusting with cinnamon and putting a fan on to increase air circulation.

Hi Lucas. I need some Images for work of romaine in different ages and your video is a lifesaver. If you have a bunch of pictures of Romain laying around let me know. I am even willing to pay to form them If they are good. (ps: I don't have much money so don't ask for a loot pls). ps2: if you read this message after 1-2months it's probably too late.

I'm guessing you stop replacing the plastic on or by Day 19. While where on the subject, where can I order/purchase the tray and so on? And if I want to do the growing outside, is there a way I can find a taller transparent tray cover?

After picking the lettuce, can i still water them to grow or do I need to plant seeds again?
@lucasgrowsbestyt
@lucasgrowsbestyt 4 года назад
Hi Eunice. If you cut just some of the outer leaves of each lettuce plant, leaving the inner leaves to grow, you may be able to get another harvest. I have never tried this myself but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

How long do you expose the plants from the grow light? 24/7? did you just use pure water or chem nutrient rich base?
@aprilianindy3200
@aprilianindy3200 3 года назад
I don't think I need the light 'coz I live in a tropical country. I'll just place them outdoor 😆 So you don't need to do anything other than water them everyday? That's neat. Thank you.

what kind of light did you use? UV or just regular fluorescent lamp?

I use a fluorescent grow light fixture. They don't sell this version anymore but there is a new (and probably better) LED version: www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/planting/grow-lights/76513-floralight-t5-led-full-spectrum-tabletop-grow-light-stand

This may be a dumb question because I don’t know anything about this, but when exactly did you take the cover off completely? That’s what I can’t find anywhere. When they first sprout but are still tiny, or many days after? I tried taking it off to avoid Mold and misting/watering from the bottom frequently but some died almost right away.
@Kk-zq4kj
@Kk-zq4kj 4 года назад
Usually I take my top off when they get close to touching the top of lid (: if they have enough light/ sunlight & warm water they should stay warm & healthy (: You may have just had some bad seeds everyone experiences that as frustrating as it can be. Good luck !
@lucasgrowsbestyt
@lucasgrowsbestyt 4 года назад
This is definitely not a dumb question Laura, it is very intelligent in fact. I take the cover off whenever the majority of my seedlings sprout. If you leave the cover on once they sprout for too long the excess heat (due to greenhouse effect) will cause the seedlings to get leggy beyond repair.
