The large flower is the male! The female is the little one. Like others in nature, the male is flamboyant! But let’s give him a break. He is relating to girls being prettier in his human world. Kinda sweet.😂
I have watched a different video about removing the smaller bloom from the stem ,however they call the smaller bloom a Female because it produces seed , on your video you call it Male ,this is confusing me , please could you enlighten me ,thanks , great video by the way .
Pretty sure u said it backwards. The female is the flower u pick off and leave the male. The female has the funny little back end that the petals look like flights on an arrow.
Hi Bobbie, I agree. I've been pinching the female buds off (there's two on mine) for a few years now and you do get larger male blooms. I don't wait until the flower forms, I believe this wastes energy. The ones I grow are Begonia Non-Stop. Best regards. 🥀
Realize you took the female flower off and the way you can tell is right behind the flower there is a little sick face to the female flower and that's where the seeds will grow. If you break it open you'll see the little unpollinated seats. So that's email flower wants to be fertilized and that's why it takes so much strength from the plant. It's trying to reproduce itself.
Yep the little flower is female. You are cutting thr right one you just got the male/female mixed up. Easy to do as the big bright one should be the female doncha think lol
Sorry but you are all wrong in the comments. You can't say he got the male/female info wrong without considering what the flowers identify themselves as.
I love your nursery farm ... i need this one begonia seeds but not available my areas please provide to seeds of me .. please please please i love begonias
The reason you take the smaller flower off as the plant will try to set seed. It's just like breaking off I'm dead heading plants like zinnias or marigolds of many other plants geraniums you deadhead them take the Dead flowers off so they don't set seed and therefore they keep growing and don't feel like they've succeeded in regenerating themselves
Kathleen Murphy what fertilizer should I use for this type of begonia ? Or do u need any ? I bought a big container and plan to put it indoor in front of a sunny winter
@@kingston5885 most people say for a flowering plant you need the middle number higher. With all my plants I use some type of Miracle Grow or orchid fertilizer when they're blooming with the middle number higher. But don't use it. Thanks because plants don't like a lot all at once they like a little bit all the time like mother nature feeds them. I also add a product called calmagic which is calcium and magnesium which are important for cell growth for plants. I also use a teaspoon of Epsom salts per gallon of water an ad a diluted solution of seaweed emulsion. That's what I use for my orchids. I also in my house plants and my other flowering plants that are planted in soil I give them a couple of jobe's fertilizer sticks they give them a little bit of fertilizer every time you water. In the summertime plants dry out quicker so sometimes you give them once a week some nutrient solution and other times when they dry out your just give them plain water. There's something else I always put in the soil with my outdoor plants especially and that's a product called soil moist. They sell it at Lowe's. They're little crystals polymer crystals that absorb 50 times their weight in water and hold it in like a clear Jello like substance until the roots need water and then the roots can suck it out of the Crystal and the Crystal goes dry again. It doesn't make the soil soggy in fact if you're in over water it helps to keep the soil the right moisture level. Most of my plants in fact all of my plants like that to be in the soil but most of all the coleus cuttings that I have and plants that I have absolutely love soil moist in their potting media. And helps them go an extra day especially in summer heat or windy days and extra day without water. Soil can only absorb so much water but with the crystals added it gives them a little bit of an insurance policy so they don't wilt. If you go to my channel which is just my name in the word house plants or elephant ears are coleus orchids along with my name in the search engine you'll find me I did a bunch of videos Last Summer with my soil mix for things I was putting up. My allocation colocasia elephant ears needed bigger pots because they kept getting bigger and bigger and blowing over. I also had a zillion coleus cuttings that I had to repot from water to soil.
You take the female flower off and that's the one with the little pod seed capsule behind it and just single pedals. The male flower is the showy flower that double one like a rose those you leave on. But you don't have to take any of them off necessarily just don't let the female flower try to set seed that means it will hang on the plant and eventually turned brown and just sit there because it just made a bunch of little seeds or tried to but most of those seeds are not fertile so they won't grow new plants
Kathleen Murphy wow you are a pro !!! My elephant ears getting smaller and smaller leaves . Some big old leaves died off too . I dunno why ?! Should I put it outdoor under the shade area ? Does it help? Also what kind of fertilizer should I feed my elephant ears ?
Yeah, you've got your flowers mixed up. The single flower is the female, evident by the seed ovaries full of undeveloped seeds. This IS the one you want to remove.
Sorry to say this but as with any species the male is generally more beautiful than the female. Totally opposite when it comes to this plant, I see. But as with my life in order for me to get better and it becomes stronger I had to get rid of the male LOL
She got it backwards you remove the smaller flower the one with single pedals the male flower is not the one that can produce seeds and it's the one that's full like a rose so leave that beautiful one on the plant. You don't have to remove any of these necessarily it's just you'll get more flowers if you keep them what we call in the plant industry or the plant family deadheading. You don't want a plan to go to see cuz then it fulfilled its purpose you have to keep a trying to reproduce itself
He showed the right flower to take off he just mixed up which was male and which was female but the information he gave was correct about which flower to take off
