I will show you how to grow mint easily from grocery store bought mint. I will show you how to prepare cuttings to grow in water and transplant them in soil when they are ready.
Stem cuttings - Pick thick and healthy branches when buying the mint. I recommend you do this process as soon as you bring it home. But It will still work if you have to keep it in the fridge for a day or two. Take a stem remove all the bottom leaves. Just keep two to 3 leaves on the top. It will still grow if there is no leaves on the stem. We only need three to five inches long stems from the top.
Where you remove the leaves it’s called a node. Roots will grow from there. Just make a cut below the node.
Propagation - Take some tap water in a clear cup or vase. If you don’t have anything clear it’s fine too. Place cuttings in water, make sure one or two nodes are submerged in water. I like to use clear container so I can remember to change the water and check in roots. Make sure to change water every few days or at least once a week. Keep them in indirect sunlight. You can keep it on kitchen counter, top of the fridge or any other place where you don’t forget about them. Every time you change water if see any stem that’s soft or mushy get rid of it. Clean the container properly and replace the water.
Transplanting - When roots are two to three inches long you can transplant them in soil. You can use regular potting mix or add some perlite in it. Place the roots about two inches deep in soil. Then water it thoroughly. Move it in full sunlight after a week. Make sure to keep the soil moist all the time. Once weather is nice outside , you can move your pot outside or you can plant it in your garden. It will die back in winter and come back in summer. Mint is hardy perennial, it also grows year around in warmer climates.
Sunlight - Mint performs well in full Sun as long as soil is kept moist. But it will also thrives in partial shade.
Water - Mint likes a lot of water . Don't let the soil dry out completely.
If you like it to grow faster and bushier , keep pinching top part. It will branch out every time you pinch it. It is pretty easy to grow mint and have it growing inside during the winter. So you can have fresh mint all year around.

Hi, thanks for the informative video. Does the pot need to have holes in it ? I purchased a tin pot and using this to add compost and place the rooted mint stems in it.. is it ok ?
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 3 года назад
Your welcome! Drainage hole are important so that access water can drain out. But if you are careful with waterings and don’t overwater then you can use that pot. If you ever pour too much water you can tilt the pot and drain the the extra water. I have some if my plants in pots without holes I’m very careful when I water them. Now I know how much is enough for that pot.

HELP! I've killed four healthy mint plants that I bought from the store. I have found that one video on showing how to water your mint plants without overwatering them which is what I've done apparently. Because I already killed two plants I let their soil dry out. Then they were starting to curl a little bit welt I guess so I added water to the soil on one The other I lightly missed it they both died. When I add even a little bit of water The next day the leaves have shriveled up and turned black and start to fall off. How to water the plants what's too much what's not enough I can't find any way to get it right I've had a couple where the soil was fairly dry but because every time I add water to the other two they died this time I just would missed the leaves and it was doing fine but then I over missed it and the leaves turned black overnight shriveled up and of course this plant also has no leaves that are green they're just black they start to turn black around the edges and the whole leaf turns black only when I add water whether it's add water to the potter or spritz it with a spray valve it's I still get the same outcome.

I’m so sorry to hear that. My mint does too if forget to water it and let dry out too much. Also later try to give lots of water to save it. Mostly mint is easy to care for as long as you water it regularly. Also prune it regularly. I use well draining potting mix. But I have grown mint before in pots with no holes. But I would only give it certain amount of water. Can you tell me where you keep your mint? I mean how much sunlight it gets ?

@@PlantingwithTej oh thank you so much. Yes I have three mint plants that have turned black after I watered them even though the soil was dry and I didn't put a lot on them. One I over missed it I guess. I tried cutting all this docks off I don't know if I cut them enough though I don't know how much is supposed to be exposed. I cut them to about an inch and a half down now that twigs are black with green on the end and I mean the end. They we're getting direct sunlight from the balcony then I read that they're not supposed to be in direct light so then I moved them to where they got sunlight but not blazing on it. Seem like every time I watered them they died even if they were totally dry and I added just a little bit of water maybe 4 oz of water in a pot that's 7 in in diameter and about 7 in tall I got them at Walmart three of them that were sitting outside with all the other herbs and tomato plants and stuff so if that gives you an idea of this exact size. I was doing okay missing them but feeling the soil sticking my finger down there was basically no moisture tiny tiny bit and then again when I watered them one by one they died I don't think I should buy anymore until I figure out what the heck I'm doing. Still don't know how long it's going to take these ones that I cut down to about an inch and a half because they were dead leaves just black shrively. I have three and a half plants that turned black so I cut the stocks off and I have half a plant that's turned black around the leaves but I haven't cut those off yet they're still there.

I keep mine in direct sunlight indoor. The ones I have planted out side are in shade and some in direct sunlight. They all are growing well outside. Mint can be prune very hard and I’ll start putting out new growth really quickly if it’s not dead. Try keeping in the the direct morning sunlight and water it more often. Also keep pruning the top so it can branch out. When they turn brown and woody, I think it’s lack of water. Try using a big pot for outside mint if you don’t have access to the ground. They grow more outside. Indoors can be tricky sometimes if you don’t water correctly. I mean don’t let dry out completely. That’s when leaves get dry and crunchy. Also try to root from the store bought mint bunch instead of buying a new plant. I showed how to in my mint video.

Will mint work in a hanging basket in the house? I don't know if they will trail or not... Thanx for the video 🙂
@PlantingwithTej
@PlantingwithTej 2 года назад
Your welcome Tess! Yes you can grow in the hanging basket as long as the top of the basket gets sunlight. I have the in pots indoors. They do trail if it’s growing thin. It doesn’t grow very strong stems indoor specially when it’s cold weather here. I would like to how it goes. Please update me if you can.

In order to grow inside, do I need to keep the pot near the window for sunlight? I live in Canad, so I want to grow it indoor. Please reply. Thank you.
@PlantingwithTej

Yes it does need direct sunlight or lots if bright light.

@@PlantingwithTej thank you so much for your prompt reply. I’m really interested to grow mint but never been successful. I already followed someone and put the stems in water but didn’t grow the roots. Can I just plant them straight to the pot instead of growing the roots? Please suggest.

@@nkausar1 you they should grow in soil directly as well. I haven’t try that but they can. I have lots is mint growing the friend that comes back every in spring. Just for winter I try to grow indoors.
