So last fall I decided to collect some petunia seeds from the hanging baskets we grew. In this video, I'll show you how I grow petunias from those seeds. We'll go through the process I used for collecting and germinating the petunia seeds and then growing them on for a few months. Through the process, you'll see how long it takes to grow petunias from seeds.
Here's PART 2: • How to Grow PETUNIAS F...

Last year, I collected some of the blossoms after they started falling and kept them in a box, hidden in a dry, cool drawer. Then in spring, I sprinkled them over a flower box with soil, watered them and left them to do their thing. It's mid-summer now and that box is sprawling with petunias - they're just so easy to grow and so pretty!

Hiya Mike from Epsom 🇬🇧 I collect the seed pods every year, for many years, and put them in paper envelopes (not plastic bags cos they will go mouldy), close the flap but don't seal, let them dry out and the pods 'pop' ejecting the dust like seed into the envelope. You end up with thousands of seeds! I transplant the seedlings in very small bunches quite early on, they need space as they grow rapidly. Petunias are amazing as the seedlings are so tiny but grow into large plants at warp speed 🙂 I find them growing naturally everywhere below my hanging baskets, win win! 😂 Yours look very healthy 👍🏻 Btw I find it useful to 'water' the seeds initially by putting the pots in a tray of water, I don't use a watering can cos it washes the seed out, when they dry out I then use a fine spray mist from a spray bottle, it disturbs them less. Hope this helps ❤

So do petunias put out seeds even if they weren't pollinated? I bought a petunia plant to put outside, but I haven't done so yet. Those flowers are powerhouses it keeps putting out flowers. I noticed seeds also falling out so I decided to collect them and see if they grow. I did see that they should just be sown on top of geowing medium and that they needed light to sprout. It's been a week now and nothing. Wondering also if maybe the seeds from the plant are just sterile?

I save my seed pods and dry them in a coffee filter. My favorite part is seeing what odd colors you get from saving hybrid plant seeds.

I made updates of this through the summer and I did get a random interesting color or 2 but for the most part they reverted back to a standard pink.

What should I do with my petunias at the end of the growing season? Last year when they stopped blooming I just mowed them all down and they came back beautiful this year again

I'm curious to see what comes about from the thousands of trailing petunia seeds I collected from this year. Being a designer brand I'm not sure they'll propagate but I sure am going to try.

I'm trying to root petunias from cuttings and I have very low success. (Maybe 20%) Are petunias hard to root from cuttings?

Interesting video Mike But the question will you get original petunias ?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
The seedlings will all be a variable group of generic petunias. They will not stay true to the parent plant. You would have to take cuttings to do that, or breed 2 identical parents that were stable and you'd still get some variation with that method.

Hi Mike! Just wondering when to start fertilizer for the seedlings??
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 года назад
You can plant in potting soil and fertilize as soon as they sprout but make sure it's a weak fertilizer solution until you figure out their requirements and see how they respond.

I tried the petunia cutting method to propagate mines, and it didn’t work for some reason. I kept it on the windowsill, there were five or six cuttings total, and none of them have rooted, and it’s been one month. I didn’t have rooting hormone, so I dipped each one in raw honey dissolved in water. Do you think maybe that’s why? I kept the soil moist and I kept them on the windowsill

If the sun hit the plastic container then it may have heated up too much. If you didn't use a container or plastic/glass cover then they may have dried out.

Hey, when you start cuttings/seeds, do you always overwinter in shelter and plant next spring?

I do different cuttings from different plants throughout the year at different times, indoor and outdoor. It's too broad of a subject to narrow it down to one time period.

It's a Viparspectra xs2000 LED grow light. I think I had it at about 150 or 200 watts when they germinated and the light was about 3 foot above it. They will germinate under a broad wattage and spectrum of lighting though.
