Can you show us online when you open a big one, Dan? There is something soooo magical about seeing something opened up! Squash is pretty magical anyway. Wow! Nice looking huge pumpkins!😀 In the states we are told to only grow those as a novelty. We are told they aren't good for eating...have you tasted yours yet? I bet they are okay for eating too.🙂 Like, I'm zone 8a...we get into the 100+ range normally during our summer and we grow pumpkins. Among other varieties I grow a small pie pumpkin in a container. I get at least 3 fruits per plant. One pumpkin is perfect for a pie.👩🏽‍🍳 You do some pretty cool gardening!👍

Wow Dan, I am seriously impressed! I thought you did well to get a pumpkin to that size and the shape/ colour is perfect. I bet the local kids are wondering what you will be doing with those. They look like the true pumpkins of children's books and films. It is when you have crops like that , that you need one of those basement come garage/ utility areas. I see a lot of people storing smaller squashes/ pumpkins for around 6 -8 months in ideal conditions. I think larger ones would be less likely to store long term. Really impressive results though. I guess the petit pan are already eaten? Let us know how the red corn cobs tasted after. Great work, 2021 was an ace year for you, well done!

Great! Because a load of pumpkins was about the only thing I managed to grow this year (thank you, Irish bloody weather!) along with kale. So I've picked a heap of them and more are ripening but I REALLY needed info on how to cure and store them. I found they did great on my raised beds of cardboard, straw, well rotted chicken bedding which created a fair bit of heat, surprised how much. Water...NO prob here. :/ I'm about to consider covering the ones still to ripen though with plastic as we've cold nights now and it "feels" like frost is on the way, so just in case....

I had a unusual year for pumpkins here in North Dakota. Started out great in May but then of course 3 months with less than an inch of rain had it's effects. Nature can be amazing though, the plants struggled all summer with drought and the heat wave (I did still do a lot of watering). We are having a warm September with no frost expected in the next two weeks which is amazing in itself. Now all of a sudden the pumpkins have taken off producing and they are all maturing at a miniaturized state to I guess produce seed. I did just grow Connecticut field and some sugar pumpkins this years, the mice got to the larger varieties. Your harvest was very impressive!!

Hi Dan great video, and generally a very informative channel. I love how you grow lots of different types of veg and your tips are brilliant and on point. For pumpkins, I just wondered what date did you harvest these two and were there any telling signs that they were ready? I’ve watched other videos before and noticed that their vines were almost dead when they harvested theirs but your vine still looked quite lush. Additionally, what size bed is best? I ask because I have limited space and often plant lots of veg together. Considering this, do you recommend any suitable companions for an intensively planted bed where I intend to grow pumpkin?
@homegardens7682
@homegardens7682 2 года назад
Indeed! They could have been left to grow for longer but they would have been too heavy for me to lift! As big bed as possible for giants like these as they are hungry and spread. Smaller varieties would need less space. They sprawl so companion planting could be tricky. Maybe other sprawlers like squash etc can be good.

OMG those pumpkins! I love the look of them, but am unsure about the practicalities of eating them, when they are so huge. Will you freeze some down? Or perhaps they could be made into pumpkin soup and some could go into veg curries/stews. It would be a shame to waste any but once cut open the flesh won't keep for long.
@homegardens7682
@homegardens7682 3 года назад
I imagine freezing and pumpkin soup will be made. They are just about small enough to be maneuverable, any bigger would have been an issue!
