Great video. I never knew that radishes didn't like high nutrients. My first 3 years of trying to grow them were a fail. Last year I finally got good ones. Growing up we never planted them, so that's one veggie I didn't know about. I grew up working with my dad on 10 acres of vegetable farm, and almost the whole 150' by 100' backyard we had at home. I could go on for pages about the stuff we grew and how much, but that's too much to type or read right now. Thanks again for the good tips and advice.

Just harvested my first radishes this week. They are so much more tasty and less sharp than grocery store varieties. You're right on about the nitrogen. I tried growing them in my aquaponics setup and got HUGE greens and little or no bulbs. Didn't know why until now. Thanks.

Thanks for all your enthusiasm and education. I been gardening for about 10 years, and just this last year I learn about Winter gardening. I try Radish and work well in one area of my garden, and try in another area, and only produce leafs mostlikely due to the amount of compo on the ground, just learn that in your video. Thanks again, I'm looking forward in continue learning and growing.

I grow them all season in all kinds of soil, it doesn't matter if they bolt or only produce greens since the greens are as delicious as the radish itself, and as nutritionous, do not throw away the greens!

Your radish have bolted. Gone to seed. They may have been started when the temperature was too hot. They germinate at 45-85 Deg F, but they like to grow at 50-65 Deg F. I planted in late August and a few bolted. Btw I sent pictures of bolted radish to Johnny's seeds before I could identify the radish was the flower. Johnny's was no help in helping me identify the flower:( Radish are "supposed" to winter kill, but some of mine didn't bc there were still slivers of radish growing in my soil.
@rextsixz7902
@rextsixz7902 4 года назад
So can you buy fertile soil or you make it fertile yourself
@Crucisphinx
@Crucisphinx 3 года назад
Rext Sixz both! Adding compost and/or slow release fertilizer to your soil will help create a fertile environment for growing, while if using pots or raised beds (or just growing in ground) you can buy potting soil that’ll already have compost and organic matter added. If growing in pots and raised beds make sure it’s potting soil, if growing straight in the ground it needs to be topsoil, though if you already have a nice texture of soil, adding some compost would be better since you merely need to amend it rather than start again. Amending soil is easier and less costly than getting new soil, and generally just as effective. Of course you can (and should) also test your soil to make sure it is (or isn’t) fertile before adding or not adding anything.

My garage nearly ran out of radishes last week, and I couldn't afford to go to my usual supplier of radishes because the small man living in my bedroom electrical outlet had spent all my hard-earned income on powdered drink packets. I just ordered seed from you. I'm growing in a poly-low-tunnel in Tennessee. Should I let them go 30+ days with it being so close to the winter solstice? The ground doesn't freeze in the poly-tunnel, but it does get pretty cold. It's also always raining in the poly-tunnel. Sounds perfect for radish after watching your video. I grow in mostly barn soil, but I also have access to river flood soil (which is mostly limestone sand and decomposing leaves.) Will sandy soil work well for radish? Thanks for the video. Otherwise, I'd be growing them in barn soil like I do carrots.

I am growing watermelon radishes from your store, and wonder about the long red stem that has formed on the sprouted seeds. Is that from using fertilized water? Since watching this video, I now know I should use plain water, but in the meantime, should I bury this long stem? The leaves look great, but the 2 1/2 - 3 in stems aren't strong enough to hold them above the dirt.

Great video, Luke. It might be silly, but I cannot get my boulder lettuce to grow. I can do leaf lettuce, but the head lettuce wont even come up out of the ground. Does anyone have any suggestions on why? I have planted it twice and still will not come up.
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 9 лет назад
Mark Saggese it could be old seed, lettuce does not sprout well after about 2 years. It could also be rot, if the soil is damp all the time lettuce will not sprout. Lettuce is VERY prone to molding, and therefor I always recommend planting about 4-6 seeds per planting hole, and then thinning once they come up. The last thing is not burying the seed too deep, lettuce is a tiny sprout, and if it is too deep it won't have enough energy to sprout.

I will start it in doors next year, my neighbor gave us some wonderful leaf lettuce. I am sadden to say that I woke up at 6am to go outside and find my kale eaten by a thief, not sure what it was, I am guessing rabbit. My garden is 150 by 40, so I cannot afford to buy fence, liquid fence will have to work for now.

How do you make sure you have low nutrient soil? I have a container garden and tried growing them in potting mix but ended up with fine looking leaves but no bulbs.
