How to grow Ricinus (Castor Oil) plants

Ricinus communis or 'Castor Oil plants' are some of the most impressive tropical plants that you can grow from seed for your garden. These tropical jungle giants grow to enormous architectural plants in just one growing season. Ricinus (castor oil plants) are not difficult to grow from seed, and can be grown easily on a sunny windowsill. Ricinis plants grow well in the UK and other temperate climates, but do need staking against strong winds. The plants are highly toxic, so please take care when handling the plants and especially the seeds.

I love this plant so much! I have been growing it for many years and have learned alot about it. Here are some of my notes: -If you want to make them grow faster, plant them in a big pot, at least 40cm in diameter per plant and plant them in pairs or in 3's, instead of planting them into the ground. -If you want to grow them even much faster, stop it from flowering and cut off the buds as soon as you see them. Letting them develop buds and fruit will strongly slow down the growing process. -These plants are extremely hungry for nitrogen, I can fertilize the living hell out of them! I give 3 different long-term fertilizers, Hornshavings, Blood meal and especially Ammonium Nitrate. Not all at once mind you. Then I also give liquid fertilizer (8+8+6) twice a week and the larger they are, the more I give at once, up to 3 times the recommended dosage! -The warmer and more light they get the better. -They develop much bigger leafs when planted in the ground -You can buy up to 8 or 9 different variations of this plant, from extremely deep red leafs (New Zealand Purple) and stem to light green (Zanzi Palm, Zanzibariensis). The green variations grow the biggest leaves, up to 1 meter in diameter. And the green variation 'Zansi Palm' grows the tallest of all, up to 5meters. -They need ALOT of water on hot days. One pot (60cm diameter) with 3 plants will need up to 30 liters of water in one day! -You can, if you have the space, take them inside in winter, and cultivate them until it is warm again outside and grow them in the garden. -In their natural habitat, they reach a height of 13meters over 2-3 years! I have so much more, but I will leave it at that :)

One year update? How well did they grow and how big are they now?
@MarkMichalowski
@MarkMichalowski 24 дня назад
@@codyrebelcb Well, good news - and bad... Five of the 15 communis (but none of the zanzibarensis) germinated, but then one just died inexplicably - possibly I put them outside too early... Over the summer, two of them grew to little more than a metre tall, and the other two grew to about two metres. Not bad but a bit underwhelming. Only one of them developed any seeds, but before I could take them and dry them, we got an unexpected frost (yes, I had left them that late!!) which mushed the seeds to a pulp. So, overall... disappointing. I haven't bothered this year - I may give them another go next year. Have you tried growing any?

Good to see another video at last, thanks. Hope the garden is fairing up well now that the real cold spells are fast approaching. One of question. Given the high toxicity of the plant what are your thoughts on planting in a garden used by kids? What level of contact is fine without consequence? Cheers 👍
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 5 лет назад
The garden is coping surprisingly well so far, the bananas were growing right through December but have now been forced into dormancy by the frosts. I've had to plant lots for evergreen structure over the past few weeks, I'll share it in the next vlog. I'd always be hesitant to grow toxic plants in a garden used by kids. If any part of the plant is ingested it can have serious consequences. The seed pods on Ricinus are bright red and can be very tempting for kids to collect and handle. It's risky if you have pets too. I won't be growing them when I get a dog.

You can start sowing these february but you will have to repot it a few times before you can put them outisde. Btw. i plant them much deeper so the stems will be better when repotting. Can you grow these plants in a pot and if so how deep a pot do I need?
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 года назад
Yeah sure, the bigger the pot the bigger the plant will get. If you use a smaller pot be sure to feed the plants lots during the growing season 👍🌱

How do you know if the seeds have ripened cause I just opened up a pod and the "seeds" are white and seem nonexistent
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 2 года назад
Leave them to go brown and papery on the plant, they will almost be dry before you take them off. 👍

Very invasive species of plants you dont need to plant them with one plant already matured you can get thousands of plants.just let the dry ones remain on the tree it will pop naturally by the sun and disperse,soon you will have so many you will grow tired of them🤣🤣 I.dont have a problem with them though i make and sell the oil for a living

I didn't know to wear gloves and I just shelled a whole jar of seeds. Some of the white tips were black or pink, so I picked them off with my nails....now I am not sure if i am sick now from that process? I have been sick now for a few days....anyone been sick from shelling without gloves?
@auntyp2980
@auntyp2980 3 года назад
That wont harm you.i shell them without gloves all the time.have been doing that since 2013.just make sure the crushed bean does not get anywhere near your mouth or your food etc.this thing is deadly
@TheEzlau
@TheEzlau 3 года назад
@@auntyp2980I think I must be sensitive. You may have a stronger immune system than I do. But I am sure something went wrong while I was in the process...so I think wearing a mask and gloves will be safer for those who may be more suspectable to sicknesses. After all, this is one of the most deadly plants in the world, we must have caution and respect while working with it!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why don't you direct sow?
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 4 года назад
For me here in the UK the soil isn't warm enough early in the year so I get a headstart indoors. In a warmer climate direct sowing should be fine 🙂🌱

I did direct sow mine after a 24 hours seed soak. I live in southeastern Michigan, and planted them about May 30th.... and now it is August 21 and the two plants that are 3 or 4 inched apart are about 10 feet tall.You should be about to get yours to 15 feet tall or more in N.C.

yasin keskin yeah, it really is sad that anyone would want to grow this for the poison. The people that do are a disgrace to the gardening community, because they’re such beautiful plants that are perfect for anyone that wants a show-stopping plant that requires next to no care. Just keep it watered and give it plenty of sunlight, and it will grow into a wonderful plant. Also keeps moles at bay.

They are beautiful but I took them out of my garden because they are so poisonous. The seeds pods eject the seeds as they burst open and I was afraid they would shoot into my neighbor's garden and a dog or child would eat them. Just 4 seeds can be lethal for a child.
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise Год назад
Yes, I stopped growing these when we got a dog. The other option is to cut off flowering stems before seeds form.

the warning about the toxicity should have been more than a footnote. These plants are the source of the poison ricin.
