This video is a detailed description of Silver King Euonymus. Silver King is a variegated upright growing variety of Euonymus. It has creamy white variegated foliage year around. Silver King makes a great foundation plant or a container plant. This low maintenance shrub is very showy.

Jim, this was fantastic. I have a hard time finding this particular one in all of my local nurseries. People try to sell me a variegated-looking plant with 4 leaves that come from a center stem and thorny. I finally located one that was not for sale, the King ;like you're holding but the white and creme shades are over 50% of the leaf=gorgeous. It was growing naturally up a spruce tree, to at least 20' or more. It is stunning climbing up and in such a high contrast big tree like that. So I was lucky enough to have some branches that had fallen from a storm the day before and now I am off to propagate this magnificent addition to my gardens. I just thought you'd like to know there is a climbing nature to it and it really takes off in that acidic soil up on a hillside in zone 7a.

Thanks, Jim. I bought one from my local garden center and it stayed healthy in the container for over 6 months! I'm going to plant it to anchor a foundation planting with various local azaleas, bulbs and dogwood in my backyard against a white picket fence where it can get air flow and several good hours of filtered morning sun. That variegation will really help other plants pop against the white fence. Your review was super helpful in my zone 7 deer friendly habitat. Helped me decide against positioning it in a couple other empty spots along the house foundation. Thank for the thorough information about planting, mulching and moisture.

I ordered a cherry laurel online and was sent one of these by mistake. Once I figured out what it was, I was very happy. I love variegated and the leaves are beautiful. And I have a great spot for it.

Super useful info. I only bought one Euonymus plant but started to think buying lots more to replace my thorny mixed hedge with this evergreen. However, due the scale insect problem resulting from the lack of good airflow, this plant can't be used a hedge... I didn't know that... So I'll just pot it and grow it as a lolipop topiary near the porch.

Just bought this beautiful plant from Lowe’s and searched here to learn how to grow it. Can’t wait to see its nice foliage against my Leyland Cypress.

Hi Jim, Thank you for this video. I don't know much about plants but wanted to add some to my apartment. I live in New York City and purchased this plant from Home Depot. Will this plant be able to thrive on my balcony in a container? If so, any tips?

Here in Modesto, California July and August can have many days of triple digit temperatures. I was thinking of panting a Silver King in the front of our house where there is full sun from 11am to sunset. Our front yard faces due west with no houses to block the sun. Would this be a problem for this plant?

Thanks Jim, I have golden euonymus around 50 in a hedgerow. I’m worried that I planted them too close I spaced them at 3ft apart although I have room for them to grow outward to around 4.5ft on the sides. Should I be worried? What will most likely happen? Will I just be pruning more?

This was helpful. I bought two of these last April and planted them in giant wooden wine barrel planters. I am on a high floor in a Manhattan apartment and I do get some wind on the balcony where they are but nothing too bad unless there is a hurricane. They are about 4 feet high and are growing on a wooden trellis very nicely. My question is as the winters is coming upon us I wonder about freezing. Should I wrap them in burlap for the winter? And should I also use some mulch at the base? They get plenty of sunlight. I do not want to lose them.

If the pot freezes and the wind blows across the foliage, it could kill it quickly. The pot can't stay frozen for long periods of time. The wind is fine as long as the roots are able to deliver water to the top of the plant.

Hello Mr. Putman. I had this shrub growing inside my home by a window. The pot was light to lift, so I watered it. I think I over watered it due to a lot of leaf drop. Most of the branches are brown and few are soft and still green. Should I throw out this beauty?

I hate to tell people these kinds of things, but I would say it is on its way out and even it's not it would take an annoying amount of time to recover.

Are you familiar with a very similar variety called "euonymus Luna" with the center yellow and the edges green as opposed to the other way around? Will that too grow to a similar width and height? Also, what are those pinkish plants in the background?

Hi, is there any particular name brand fertilizer you would recommend for the silver king euonymus? I'm located in zone 7a. The plant 3gal size has been in the ground 1.5 years and has been struggling to keep alive, leaves droppings, dies back cut out at plant base, etc, but appears to wanna live.much TLC😅❤

Hi Jim! We have planted 9 of these last year for a hedge between our neighbors. They are 3 feet tall and grown a bit floppy with multiple suckers. I would like to keep them tidy and full as they grow. Do i keep the suckers that are growing around each plant or can i cut suckers to keep one trunk for each plant to keep it tidy, full and strong for wind tolerance? I don't want them to grow thin and floppy. Help
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 лет назад
I would probably just do a little light pruning on the top of them a few times a season to make sure the branches are thickening up. As far as the suckers go, I probably wouldn't worry about them unless they were outside of where you want the plant to grow.

I've had an issue with deer eating my euonymus for the past 2 winters (as you mention in the video). I know there is probably no way to avoid this. So my question is what would be the best way to revive it after the deer get to it in the winter? Last year it came back somewhat nicely, but since it's a young shrub, it was easy for the deer to just totally pull it apart again this past winter.

Hello Jim. I really need your help. I'm not totally sure if I have a euonymous but it looks very similar to it. Mine have gotten to about 11 feet tall and I wanted to give them a trim and maybe also get them alot more full throughout. I think I may have trimmed them wrong. I also trimmed them about 2-3 weeks before we had a bad couple day freeze and then right after getting temps in the 70s. I just looked up close today and have seen some limbs with the brown/grey outside layer of the limb splitting in areas and the ends where I cut them are green and some red spots like bacteria. I really want to save them is there anything I can do? Thanks
