Well, I’m not going to move to southern California, south Florida or back to the tropics, so containers are my only option, but I’m going to try.

Unfortunately "we don't care to eat it" - the original local carambola and eat store bought versions from commercial farms! Thank you Logees for a lovely inspiring session. I will locate our local seeds from a backyard and plant them

That holds also from your pomegranate trees as well. So if one really wanted to do tropical fruit anywhere in the world he could by just using his home and a pot
@sam111880
@sam111880 8 лет назад
Nice so if you do want to grow tropical fruit in a non tropic climate one could grow the tree in a pot in his celler. And it would still give fruit just not grow to big since of root restrictions on the pot. And you don't have to worry about them getting to big to fit in a room even after 7 years. Just have to control the restriction of roots

How do you fertilize these fruit trees? I have been growing a small tree (does not bear fruit yet) from seed for a couple of years and it constantly has the problem that it's leaves yellow profusely and then fall off. It is unlikely that it is because of watering issues. Thank you for the informative video!
@LogeesPlants

Depending on what type of fertilizer you use the application is different. Most common applications are diluted in water or sprinkled on top of the soil. Whatever fertilizer you use be sure to follow the directions on the package.

I've got a Maher dwarf that I ordered from Logee's last summer and it has about tripled in size (if not more). I'm growing it in a container in Georgia and it stays outside for about 9 months or so out of the year. I move it into the garage on cold nights during the winter. It's got about 5 fruits hanging on the tree right now (about the size of a quarter) and is flowering everywhere. The fruits are getting visibly larger just about every day. Approximately how long does it take from the time the flower develops into a small fruit until the fruit are ready to be picked? Thanks!

@LogeesPlants 5 лет назад
It can take quite some time for the fruit to ripen. When ripe, star fruit appear mainly bright yellow with tinges of light green. They may have some dark brown along the five ridges, this is normal. The flesh should still be quite firm to the touch.

I bought a Dwarf Hawaiian (4ft, not too big trunk) in the summer, it was productive, having flowers and many fruits around the stems but didnt grow big. I repotted it into a bigger pot. I pruned the stems so the fruits could get bigger. It was transferred to the porch and covered on

Once leaves start sprouting, and there's no longer a risk of frost, you can transplant to the ground if the plant is hardy to your zone.

Often when a plant leaves look unhealthy and winter dormancy can be ruled out, it is related to root system health. If you can check the roots and see if they are alive and healthy . If they are then you may not be feeding it enough. Use a balanced fertilizer and feed more often with less feed. You don’t want to overdo it. If the roots are dead or growing poorly then it may be a root disease issue. Although carambola are generally not affected by root disease if the plant is in too big of a pot and kept to wet it could be an issue. Make sure there is some soil dryness between waterings.

@SommetiderHvorforDetRoligRolig
I bought one of these fruits and planted the seeds.. i see that atleast one seed has germinated.. from what i can understand, some varieties are self pollinating, and others needs to be pollinated from other plants to set fruit.. the fruit that i harvested the seeds from was sweet and yellow, and also quite juice.. does those varieties typically self pollinate? cause i dont know if i should grow 1 or 2, since im growing them inside in winter, and have limited room because of other tropical plants (i do have a 400w hps lamp).. I think that the variety i have must be some mass produced variety, since i bought the fruit here in denmark.. hope someone has a clue about this
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 5 лет назад
You only need 1 plant to produce the fruit. If growing indoors, the plant would need to be hand pollinated with a paint brush, by going from flower to flower.

Can these trees produce at a small size as shown directly from a seedling?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 6 лет назад
Seedlings can fruit small although it is not consistent. We have had seedlings flower and fruit as 1 1/2 ‘ in height and a 4” pot. The problem is most seedlings are in edible. Too much acid and little sugar.

Couple of years under good growing conditions. Have to grow it inside in a sunny exposure. Temperatures need to be above freezing preferably warmer if you want fast growth.

Is it a grafted plant or a seedling? At this time of year the leaves can look poorly. But it should be in new growth shortly. Is the plant fed? And with what? Is it growing in a sunny location?

It takes awhile to get blooms/fruit from plants that are grown from seed. Try using a blooming fertilizer once every 2 weeks spring-fall.

You did not mention about fertilizing the Star Fruit. Could you please tell me a little bit about how often I should fertilize it? Thanks.
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 6 лет назад
Once a week with a dilute soluble fertilizer, ¼ strength. Or once a month with a granular organic fertilizer. Stop feeding in late fall or when growth stops as winter comes on. Start again in the late winter or spring.

Can they be grown indoors?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 5 лет назад
Absolutely! Just make sure to put them in a window with a southern sun exposure so the plant can receive 8 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Also, be sure that indoor temperatures do not dip below 55 degrees.

Maintain indoor temperatures above 55 degrees. They will tolerate temperatures down to freezing, although in the north during the winter for extended periods this will cause some defoliation. They like it on the warmer side.

+olucky11 Like any other star fruit. Maher Dwarf need to be fully ripe as in the greenish state it lacks sugar. However if you really want a good star fruit of any variety then tree ripen is the best and they are picked when fully colored and ready to fall off the tree.
