How to Grow Sugar Cane in Your Yard: Getting it Started.
In this video, filmed over 5 months, I try three different methods for rooting sugar cane starts to see which one works best. While your mileage may vary, I've discovered the method that works best for me. The video is a little long--15 minutes or so--but it is meant to be instructive for those who don't have any experience with how to grow cane, which can be grown in most of the southeastern U.S. See part II, the Update to this video here: • How to Grow Sugar Cane...

For everyone trying to do this, I used to plant many things as a kid, this is the best way for me to do it, and it was faster and move efficient. Step 1: Cut it so that each cane would have a Node at the bottom and just a little more after the node (you can have two nodes like he did), that's all you need. Step 2: Put the canes halfway in water (water doesn't need to be deep, just make sure that the lower Node and the bit after it is in water). Step 3: Wait. They will sprout faster than a longer cane, and it will probably have bigger roots, I tested this, trust me, after you plant them and they grow you will have real hard time taking them out even if you choose to (at some point they go out of control, you will be seeing tons of them, if you got other plants, they will probably take their water supply as well). Also, you can leave the upper part with the sprouts ABOVE ground, it helps it, all plants need sunlight. Enjoy Sugary treats, careful with those teeth, you can probably cut only the middle part to pieces and chew on that, trying to tear it out with your teeth isn't a good idea.

i'm watching this in 2018...i think what would have made the roots grow longer in the bucket of water... is by providing shade... roots aren't meant to be exposed to sunlight... i think by combing darkness, the bucket of water, and keeping the water relatively warm... i think this would make the roots flourish...

It's been years since this video was uploaded so I don't expect a reply but in the chance I do I have some questions 1.) how long do they take to grow? 2.) where do you get them? 3.) where I live isn't as worm as Florida so when it's cold what do I do? 4.) it's currently late February and in this video they were planted mid December so is it too late to plant them? Thank you to anyone who replies to me!
@floridabeachhunter

Thanks for watching, MoPro. (1) It takes about 9 months to a year to grow a large sweet cane. In frost-free areas the commercial growers may let it grow longer than that. They keep testing it until it reaches maximum sugar content. But that doesn't mean you can't harvest sooner than 9 months if you live in a cooler climate. (2) I buy cane at the local farmer's markets. You may be able to contact some local garden clubs or permaculture groups and they may have a member with some cane they'll share or sell to you. I also got some cane from a neighbor. There are various varieties of cane available on E-bay as well. (3) When you plant depends on how you plant. If you plant them in the ground, they won't come up until the weather warms. If you start them in a bucket like I did, you should wait until the danger of frost and freeze has passed. We rarely have a frost or freeze where I live. It is not too late to plant them now. You might want to have a look at my latest video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uEwG4i095Go.html Good luck!

I'm in my second year growing cane. I started with 2 stalks, about 6inches long and I planted them vertically (but with a slight lean..say maybe 30 degrees)...I kept those babies watered and well nourished, even to the point of using compost tea on occasion. They grew thick, long and robust..almost 3 inches from edge to edge..at least the circumference of an empty paper towel holder! I never soaked them in water prior to planting. The next batch I got from a market in FT. Lauderdale...This time I planted it flat, long enough to include 3 joints in it. After one year I harvested them...5 feet long...it's the 2nd year and I just cut two from that spot they were huge!! ...at least 6 feet and even thicker than the year before. I replanted at the same area. I believe the key is to prepare the soil as best as possible (manure, compost, straw). Then after planting, when they're about two feet high, add another layer of manure and cover with straw. Blood and bone meal are good if no dung is available. Use fresh manure only in the preparation phase and allow to penetrate the soil...at least 2 months prior to planting. Treat your cane like you would your sweetheart...lots of attention and TLC...

Your video was so extremely helpful man! I lived in Jamaica for 7 years as a youngster & my house was 15 feet from a sugar cane field that was more than 15 square acres in size. In addition, we had more than 100 cane plants that grew as tall as 9 to 10 feet on average on the actual property that we lived on. Sugar canes were ubiquitous & plentiful in Jamaica as the Saw Palmettos in Florida, yet of all the different exchange of farming methods & ideas that the local people recommended -- I never knew about the bucket sprouting then bucket of potting soil method. That seems to give fastest results so far & I have seen more sugar cane plants in my days as youth than clouds in the sky. This will be the method I that stick to from now on. Great video.

If you are planting sugarcane in Florida the best time to plant is not in December the best time to plant it is in February or March once it starts to warm up you also want to plant it in full Sun keep it well watered and fertilized for best success. if planted in the colder months the Canes will rot. When you plant some underground laying on their side make sure you do not plant them more than twice their diameter deep or they will not germinate well. I have grown them for years I really hope this helps you good luck

JPR4 Thanks for watching and offering your experience! I definitely agree that for planting out in the ground it is probably best to wait till the cold weather is over. But this year I'm growing some cane that I started in October 2014 in a self-watering container. It only took about a week to root in a bucket of water. Then I transferred it to the self-watering container. We had a warm winter and the cane was on the south side of the house. This is what it looks like in May 2015 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a2P3QiLREWg.html

My husband is from a village near Luxor Egypt and his family has a cane plantation... he suggests that you do not cut the cane in pieces but leave it long and plant 2 or 3 stalks together in 2 rows that you can walk between with a trench down the middle for watering.
@KLK01
@KLK01 6 лет назад
Heba Joan wait so above the trench like on the mount or directly plant it in the trench?
@Oasis_Desert_Rose
@Oasis_Desert_Rose 6 лет назад
They plant in many rows 50 cm wide with water trenches just 15-20 cm deeper on each side. and as of long rows as possible. You can easily uproot them ( transplant them) and adjust row length in the first year. The first 5 years if your land is good, you can just cut them off at ground level and they will grow back. After 5 years, up rope it ALL and start over again. They love compost right after harvest, and a plant food with each watering if possible! Harvest is usually FROM January thru May, and same months every year. Always withhold watering for 1 month before harvest. This will make it sweeter. In ripe canes will be tempting to try but will not have the same sweet taste as mature stalks will. Stalks are good cut in bags in the refrigerator for 2weeks, and you can freeze them! Try juicing the cleaned stalks cut into slices or cubes...! Enjoy!

the planting methods of sugar cane directly into the soil by covering the cane completely with soil is wrong. In my childhood my aunt have cane field, we growth my cane for feeding the pigs. The cane should cut into probably about 1 1/2 feet long plant it in the soil ~20 or 30 degrees angle about half of the it in the soil and let the other half above the soil.about 3~5 inches. Also need to water the soil regularly but not too wet otherwise it will rots. The best way not to soak the roots to much, is to make row of 1/2 feet high platform of soil before planting the cane, it will grow fast if recall correctly about 4~6 months it should reaches at least above 5~6 feet high. I think it will grow faster in the tropical Asia country as rain falls regularly in hot & humid weather. We have the best sweetness sugar cane i had ever taste, it is yellowish in color and 1 1/4" diameter which consider small comparing to those green color sugar cane selling for the fresh squash cane juice at drink stall. Our sugar cane is so sweet & crunchy with lot of juice, we always enjoy it for a quick chew in the hot afternoon. Sadly we don't have the farm anymore, as the whole piece land was demolish to give way for the country modern development into city.

@elizabethcasado1600
@elizabethcasado1600 6 лет назад
DJP umm... Glucose is an ANIMAL CELL product, made through respiration. Photosynthesis produces fructose... Hence high fructose corn syrup. You were almost right. And actually, plants DO need oxygen AT THE ROOTS through soil based water. This because, interestingly enough, it has an effect on plant health that our kidney/urinary system has on our immune system. See, plants basically balance the Earth's animal life. Where we waste and pollute, there's a plant -or one being developed in nature- to take in/consume and purify it back out. They're basically the balanced reflection of animals. So biologically, they have similarities, but are mostly the opposite, without breaking or bending any laws of nature. Plus, most things we learned in school, especially if it's a class period less than a few hours a day, are so basic and are constantly being expanded on, and disproven as a generic rule of thumb. ALSO, plants are individuals too, what's true for one tree breed in a valley usually isn't exactly the same for it's close cousin up the high hillside fifty miles away.

My family had been planting Sugarcane in Minnesota during the early March to April and it last until December. This is plant in a green house where the highest temperature is 100 degree F. While the coldest is 38 degree F. We adjust the temperature accordingly to the time of the years and season. It took approximately 12 month to mature and if you really want it to be super sweet, make sure that you water it at least 3 times every 2 weeks. Fertilizer are also an option. We didn't use any thought. My mom like to use leftover pepsi or mountain dew to water the root, which is why our sugarcane reach a high of 3 meters long and is super thick and very sweet.

Bagged potting mix is a bitch, you have a 75% chance of getting red rot and other cane problems because shredded cane makes up a huge portion of most potting mix baggers content. Ripping up infected cane, throwing it through a shredder, and adding it as bio mass to potting mix is a norm.

Thank you for this video. I have enjoyed chewing sugar cane all my life. Cane juice is one of my absolute favorite things to drink. Years ago, it was fairly common here in South Georgia for people, who grew cane, to set up beside the road and you would stop by when they were grinding cane and buy the juice right out of the grinder. It's more rare now, but occasionally I find it. Pure Cane Syrup is also one of my favorite things, but it's hard to find without the added corn syrup. I have found small hand turned cane mills on ebay and I'm thinking strongly about buying one. But first I need to see if I can get cane to grow. I remember my parents talking about banking the cane, meaning they piled it up in a heap and covered it with something during the winter. They planted it in the spring. Around here, most people who make syrup make it around Thanksgiving. That's the time to get the juice if you can find it. I wish you success in your efforts to grow your cane.

smclindsey Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing your memories. Sugar cane was not very common in the suburban neighborhood I grew up in. I knew what it was and a few people had a patch but nobody juiced cane or made syrup. Probably in north Florida rural areas that was more common. I think now some of the "organic" gardeners and permaculturists have regained an interest in growing cane and juicing it. The challenge is to find a juicer for a reasonable cost.

smclindsey Thanks for the info on the Pinetta event. I'll check it out. I have seen the hand cranked mills on ebay. I think they are designed for squid. I've read reviews that they are not strong enough to juice cane and are very cheaply made, however if you've got some spare cash to buy one and give it a try I'd love to hear if it works for you. Here is the review of it on Amazon: "this cand SO Called extractor Does Not extract juice from sugar cane !! I am Very disapointed ! after shipping to my FL adress and then carrying to my Home in Jamaica where we own a farm, we could only but Laugh !! The Sad thing is I Paid good money for it and now have to keep it i suppose as to ship it back to seller would Cost more than the return of my money !! No I would Not Recommend to Anyone ..Not even for a Joke !!"

floridabeachhunter Well, I would have been disappointed too. Thanks for enlightening me. I figured it was too good to be true, but I had searched for "Cane Grinder" and those things showed up. I had no idea it had anything to do with squid, even though I saw the word there. Feeling dumb! I will keep looking, and I'll let you know if I discover something workable.

In Jamaica me plant the cane horizontally in the soil but we don't cover the cane completely with the soil. There is about 10 inch of cane that is not under the earth.

We chew it until it’s nothing but fiber left in Texas. Chew and suck all the juice out. They sell it at most Mexican and Asian grocery stores. I just picked up some yesterday to grow. I’m watching videos to refresh my memory.

My family are actual sugarcane farmers, we lay our canes partially on top of the soil, sugarcane loves a bit of heat while growing. It takes almost a year till we harvest our sugarcane for it to be turned into sugar.

Alden Rodzik It depends where you are in NC. If the ground where you live usually freezes in the winter, then no, you probably can't grow sugar cane. If you live in the warmer areas and lower elevations then you should be able to grow sugar cane. Even in the colder areas you might be able to get some cane started indoors or in a greenhouse and then set it out in full sun. It might grow some canes large enough to eat before the first frost. Or you could try growing sweet sorghum, which is similar and was popular in your area in the old days.

Hey brother, if it wasn't light killing the roots in the bucket it was the lack of aeration. Either way it wouldn't have been long before you needed to give it some sort of nutrients and good call planting it when ya did!

@floridabeachhunter
@floridabeachhunter 10 лет назад
Kaitlyn Costanza I'm curious to know how you determined the 50/50 number? Is that your personal experience in your garden? Commercial sugar cane growers plant the pieces of can horizontally, lengthwise in a trench and cover them with dirt, just like I did. They don't stick them vertically in the ground. My subsequent experience shows that it's more important WHEN you plant the cane rather than how. I'll be posting another video on that shortly. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. Here are some photos of commercial cane plantings: www.google.com/search?q=planting+sugar+cane+photos&client=firefox-a&hs=D4u&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=eL5wVMG3IYSYgwSTxoEQ&ved=0CB8QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=646

This is interesting......I grew about an acre of sugar cane at one time. I grew it for about 10 years for mostly syrup production. Sprouting your cane in water was more successful because the material used was healthy and viable. You used the top of the stalk versus the others were lower parts. This is scientifically flawed to begin with. If you tried sprouting the lower parts in water, I will bet that none of them would have made it. Water causes root rot in sugar cane and the roots can die. It looks to me like the lower parts of your stalk that you planted had bad eyes/buds. Therefore, they failed. They would have failed in water also. (Always get freshly cut healthy looking cane with firm eyes) Commercial growers plant directly in the ground about 3 inches deep--depending on soil type. Water is essential to keep the planted cane from drying out until it has time to sprout. Dryness at any time can kill the eyes. Commercially, we don't space the sections out in the ground but place the sections next to each other (and sometimes even plant 2 lines of stalks) to get a good stand of cane. Thanks for your video.

Thank you for the information Charles Harrison. I have grown lots of cane from cuttings in water after I made this video. Some from the top of the stalk, like here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uEwG4i095Go.html, and some from the lower parts of the stalk like in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UKH-0LUR2Ig.html I find it works great both ways. However on a commercial basis I'm sure the techniques are different and I definitely have respect for anyone who can successfully grow a field of cane.

I started some sugar cane about ten years back. I took a clear plastic shoe box and filled it three quarters full of potting mix, watered well, placed the cane flat half buried in the soil. In a few weeks I could see roots growing through the soil and sprouts growing up. At that point I potted them and later set them out in the garden. They did well but froze during the winter even though I live along the texas coast. I might try again sometime.

I have the best luck starting sugar cane by cutting the cane into lengths of 2 - 3 nodes and then planting in a pot of potting soil but putting the cane in vertically. Each one grows and shows growth within a couple of weeks.

Thanks for watching, John, and for sharing your method. I think my cane that was in the potting soil would have done better if the weather was warmer. December isn't the best time to start cane, even in Florida. I just recently rooted more cane in water and I had some great root formation in about 4 days. I made a video of that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFfgIurQv5k.html

Nice video, Luke. I saw it a while back but when I tried to visit your website the juicer was not for sale. Glad to see you've got it up for sale now. For me personally, $700 for a hand-cranked juicer is cost-prohibitive, but some aficionados might be happy to get one at that price. Right now I'm just trying to get my hands on some cane that is not diseased. My cane grew well but ended up with leaves outer leaves turning yellow then brown prematurely as well as young canes suddenly dying when only a foot tall. Thanks for commenting and leaving the link to your juicer.
