🌱 In this video we share with you how we successfully grow Black Oil Sunflower Microgreens using our Silicone Reusable Grow Medium available on our website www.onthegrow.net. Reusable Mediums are something that we have strongly gravitated towards during our break from RU-vid. The reason being is though we LOVE Coco Coir (and still use it from time to time), it can be messy to use and costly to buy whenever you are having to restock often.
Reusable Mediums such as our Silicone & Stainless-Steel mediums, pay for themselves in about 5-10 grows while also making planting & harvesting day less messy. You first have to grasp the fundamentals of how to use these types of mediums, which really boils down to proper watering and care, then it can be quite easy to get beautiful grows with these mediums… Happy growing!!

As it turns out, this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen, that has to do with gardening. You gave every step, you gave product information on what you actually used, you gave your opinions, you gave some great tips, you have a great easy-going personality, and you have inspired me a great deal. I’m dying to go to the website and start purchasing products… as soon as I have a little bit more cash, lol! I’m definitely going to try this method, because I can clearly see it works very well. I also really love that you talked about ways of disposing the leftovers uniquely and symbiotically with nature. Great video! I’m so glad that I stumbled upon it.

I bought the stainless steel medium & was growing speckled peas & sunflowers for myself but also for someone 73 who didnt have enough $ for food after he paid his rent. Then I started growing some flowers I needed so I could save $ & be self sustainable. Wondering which you think is better. I will probably buy the silicone as well because of coco costs. I am so grateful that you are taking the time to help people grow their own food. And talk about Fresh! 🌻✨🌱

That's amazing to hear, and smart of you to lean more towards being self sustainable!! Honestly, its a personal preference choice. They both have there own learning curves, such as learning how much to water. But once you get that down, its not bad at all. I tend to use the silicone more lately, but still love the steel.

Big thanks for all the great content. Got two OGT white kits. How can I mitigate pooling (I'm sorry little micros) during day 2-3 of germination on reusable silicone mesh screens. Beets and opal basil.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely! Thank you for watching and for buying two of our kits. Beets are one of the crops that doesn't work well with Reusable Mediums due to the seed type being a picky germinator. Basil works well, though! To avoid pooling, basically just pay attention when you're watering, and if it starts to happen in an area, don't water that spot further. Hope that helps! Good day. Thanks for yet an awesome video. What do you do to remove the sunflower shells thats still on the leaves? Or do you sell as is?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching! Its nearly impossible to get every seed hull off, so you can either A) go through and remove them by hand. OR B) sell them as is and tell people not to eat the seed hulls/remove them. We would do a mixture of both, remove some for presentation, but leave a few because it takes a long time to remove them all. Keep in mind, some chefs out there actually like seed hulls because it gives them a natural look!

What do you sanitize mesh with? I use peroxide but mine have stained will that hurt anything?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 11 месяцев назад
Here's how we clean & sanitize ours: Once you have removed all the roots, you have a few cleaning options! The silicone can be washed by first using a food-safe soap & hot-warm water to lather and rinse using your hands. You can also clean it by making a paste with 1/4 cup of baking soda & warm water. Dip the silicone into the paste and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing. We also suggest following up your wash with a Natural Silicone Safe Sanitizing before reuse, such as: Option 1) Sink filled with Hot water & Dish-soap, soak for 20 mins. Option 2) Boil in water for 2-3 minutes. Option 3) Equal parts Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide to Water soak for 5 mins - 24hours. **Do not use scouring pads or other abrasive scrubbers as this may damage the silicone or create micro cuts that hold harbor bacteria.** For stubborn stains, soak in a higher amount of baking soda & water for up to 24hours. Stains haven't caused any issues with our grows personally. Just remember to check that you are using food safe & silicone safe cleaning/sanitizing practices so that you don't damage the material!

@OnTheGrow

That's a great question, personally, we don't suggest it as they don't taste as good as the harvest-able crop. Also, you have to be careful of consuming the roots/leftovers in-case of any pathogens...ect as they are grow so densely. It really comes down to personal preference and what you presume to be safe for you.

@_n0madx
@_n0madx 11 месяцев назад
So question about the germ stage… does there have to be a blackout period for this seed because when i grow my sunflower using coco coir i only water on first day then germinate for 3 days and after the 3rd or 4th day i apply lighting right away and skip the blackout part. Is it important for this medium or is there no difference at all and is just your own way of doing it?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 10 месяцев назад
Blackout is really a personal preference. We do black-out because it helps them grow a pinch taller and makes harvesting easier, you don't have to do it, unless you want to.

Hello! Thank you for watching! For a beginner, crops such as Radish or Broccoli would be the easiest to start with. Then move into Sunflower & Peas! We have tons of how to videos available on our RU-vid, most are catered towards Coco Coir as the grow medium, which is very user friendly for beginners. You could start with the reusable grow mediums like in this video, however, it might be difficult to start with unless your willing to get past the slight learning curve it can have for some people. Which is usually just watering enough :) Hope this helps!

Do you always use the silicone grow mats? What are the benefits of those versus soil? I'm in the learning process and want to do what's easiest!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 11 месяцев назад
Almost always! I'd say we use either our silicone or our stainless steel reusable mediums 95% of the time now. It doesn't work for ALL crops, so we still use coco coir & soil from time to time too. Honestly, it really comes down to personal preferences when choosing between this type of medium verses soil, as they are quite different from each-other. What we love about the reusable mediums is how much cleaner seeding & harvest day is, which is really great for when we are growing at home or in our warehouse. The silicone & Stainless steel both have their learning curves if your not use to this type of medium, but it can be quite easy to get the hang of. The main thing is watering properly. I could use some help. Here is my question... I am using the same trays and same set up (your silicone mats and also doing sunflower seed). I have had issues with what I guess is mold... stringy white stuff. I did use a hydrogen peroxide preventative spray. My sunflower seeds are a couple years old. My question is: Are some batches of sunflower seeds more prone to mold or might I just be doing something wrong? Help?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 10 месяцев назад
That's a wonderful question! Yes, seed batch, as well as seed age can play a factor in both germination, and growth. For instance, in the past we had a batch of sunflower seeds that no matter what we did, they wouldn't germinate correctly. Once we switched them out, it was like night and day. Also, we recently tried using an older bag of seed to grow with, and noticed slower germination and it seems to be more prone to mold.... I (mandi) was actually considering doing a side by side test soon to compare new vs old seed to see the differences. By the way, if you need further help, please email us, and provide any photos if you can! We'd love to help!

@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 10 месяцев назад
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you are meaning, so I'll have to take a slight guess! It's important for the water to touch the roots evenly, otherwise one side of the tray can dry out and then you will either run into die off and/or poor germination in the part of the tray that is not receiving enough water.

@OnTheGrow 11 месяцев назад
Not often at all, however we do occasionally. Its kind of part of the process of dealing with organic material such as growing plants. I'm assuming you may be running into fungus gnats?? They can be quite annoying to say the least lol. The best thing to do is start by getting rid of the tray that seems to be the problem. Then on future grows water less, seed less dense, and try out an organic pest spray during germination such as: 1 liter water, 1/2TSP of potassium bicarbonate, 15drops of organic neem oil, 15drops of organic oil of oregano, and 10 drops of Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile hemp unscented baby soap. Also, a bug zapper can be helpful too. Fugus gnats LOVE moist environments with decaying plant matter.

Brand is Itisll , found it in Amazon. Luv your videos, watch them over and over. You make it so easy. But it's not. Like handling babies. Watching over them. Be clean. Changing water. Looking out for mold. When I wash these tiny seeds or at harvesting time, I'm extra careful that nothing goes down my drain. Last thing I need is clogged pipes by sprouts and their roots. I read a comment that a lady left her drink with chia seeds overnight in her car. Next morning, she had sprouts in her cup. But it's awesome to watch them grow. And they're delicious. Don't want to pay $6 for 4-5 soggy leaves of organic Swiss chard. Nor do I want to deal with 20 lbs of soil or manure. I can basically cocoon at home during winter nor load up my freezer with Costco frozen veggies. Yeh, I made food! Many thks for your videos. ❤
