Sorry you lost your peach crop. I lost most of my pawpaw and that's a native because of the late frost/freeze. Love your videos

Good video of a professional that also learns more as he goes, which is always interesting. In Austria one says to cut peaches and apricots right after harvest and after the growing starts again on dry days to have the best chances for healthy trees.

For us large scale growers, we don't usually put on fertilizer after planting. Incorporate based on your soil tests preplant. Apply lime every year as needed to balance PH. Open center peach plantings do not typically need irrigation either, so thee isn't a great way to supply fertilizer during the season.

You can protect your blossoms from frost with a water misters. When the water freezes it protects the blossoms mostly.

i live in southern ohio on the ohio river. Ive heard red haven peach trees do good in my area and ive seen some 6 footers for sale. Im thinking about getting 2 of those and 2 honey crisp apple trees to plant at my grandparents house. I know theyd love them they are big gardeners themselves.

Would it be better to start out with smaller trees like the ones you planted or with the average 4-6’ potted trees at my local nursery? Also what do you look for in a good nursery? Thanks

@joshh9090
@joshh9090 3 года назад
@@mavismoi1 there are two ways to train peaches. Open vase and V shapes. V shapes allow for denser plantings but open center trees if kept correctly can all be picked from the ground. Pruning is always about light for fruit ripening and for fruit production.

We do not fertilize, but our sprays are a rotation so as to not build up resistance . If you have a backyard orchard, try rotating through captan and a mancozeb product with copper as needed. The sprays we use are often very expensive and we use them to target specific diseases and insects at specific times.

Do you run drip tape on your fruit trees too? If so do you fertilize wit the drip tape as well? Thanks fellow Missouri Guy! We are in the Kansas City area
@joshh9090
@joshh9090 3 года назад
It really depends on the training system. Peaches need more water than apples but you don’t need water on the open center system We run a system of micro sprinklers on our peaches and high density apples but rarely do we irrigate. It is for frost protection. If you have a small backyard tree you can sprinkle some urea during the spring but we do not fertilize.

What can you do about leaf curl? We tried the copper solution 2 years in a row but that did nothing. We are likely going to have to chop them down (only half dozen or so). We do live in Canada's Maritimes. Thank you for any thoughts you might have on this.
@joshh9090
@joshh9090 3 года назад
Depending on how bad your leaf curl is, the diseased leaves should fall in spring. You can try copper after leaf fall and apply again at bud swell. Expect to see some disease remain. Try thinning out fruit mid season if the infection is bad to let your tree save some energy.
@pamduff3987
@pamduff3987 3 года назад
@@joshh9090 Thank you for taking the time to answer. We have tried all that over the last 2 years and it has steadily gotten worse. This year, it is all over. We pruned, sprayed copper fall and spring but nothing seems to be working. We are about ready to accept the inevitable.
@mimibergerac7792
@mimibergerac7792 3 года назад
For red leaf curl (not for the aphid induced curl that starts later in spring) you have to spray copper when the buds just show the first sign of swelling - this is the only moment to stop it -, ie not in autumn or winter and not when the leaves are already out and curl, and cover them well and redo it at least after 8 to 10 days or after a rain if it occured before that time. One can use garlic concentrate but has to reapeat every 4 or 5 days or after rain 3 times.
