In this video I tell you about my experience growing this very interesting variety of palm from Madagascar. This common houseplant is a true beast when unleashed in a tropical yard and I tell you what to expect when you do. I have grown many of these outdoors and despite some of the issues, I think they are a great palm.

Thank you! I'll add sand and I'll go to Nursery and see what amounts I mix for Indoor Areca! I have planted about 300+ seeds. Hope some of them take (1st time out). Ihave them in warm spot (day) but will have to get new bulb and plastic for nights. Still cool and my house stays that way! Enjoy the weekend!

Love what you just show about the palm. Lucky where you can grew palm and sugar cane outdoors. Here in the Pacific northwest palm don't do so will. But I've been seeing them here, grown in people yards. Surprise, I thought they are tropical plants. These couple years there seem to plants that are tropical in nature, are now growing in a northern environment. Very strange. Happy day, Yack

Great video. How do you keep this palm small and bushey for privacy. Do you just top it out. So often.
@EatYourBackyard
@EatYourBackyard 4 года назад
I don't, because it continues to grow taller over time. The lower branches die off so need to be trimmed, it is just a nice umbrella shaped palm. Glad you enjoyed the video, hope you sub!

Thank you for your answer. I appreciate it!! If I may, it was recommended locally I purchase peat, perlite and cactus mix. If you will, what ratio? Is there something different you would suggest? And fertilizing? I've read once monthly, twice yearly... There doesn't seem to be any standard. These are a Palm are indoors, BTW! Thank you,
@EatYourBackyard
@EatYourBackyard 8 лет назад
+Andrea Johnson I recommend mostly sand and just potting soil. ferlize at least yearly, but lightly.

will this palm grow outdoors in a mediterranean climate? If so, will it grow in full sun, or does it need shade? I'm in South East Spain, gardening zone 9/10. I have one in a pot that is about 18 inches tall, and looks a little unhappy - leaves are browning. I wondered if it would do better outside in nature

Hello there, Thank you for your wealth of information. I have a areca palm that's in a 4 inch pot. I bought it about 6 months ago and it is only grown about 1-2 inches since. I moved it outside months ago and I put it under my fig tree in the shade. Its now 09-08-16. I am in SJ, CA and it still under the tree, the temperature is still nice and warm. to me the plant is not growing. Any thoughts on what to do? Thanks

I have read that the seeds have to "opened" or something like that and placed 1/2 in the soil and 1/2 out. When you talk about regular potting soil and water and they grow...are you placing them on top , partially in the soil or all in the soil? I am assuming a SW window and regular watering but should the soil stay very wet or moist?
@EatYourBackyard
@EatYourBackyard 8 лет назад
+Andrea Johnson I wouldn't plant them deeper thana half an inch or so. They do grow by simply lightly jamming them in the soil with the top will above the soil..The are soooo easy to germinate.

@arrow5533
@arrow5533 5 лет назад
I'm afraid they won't. The minimum temperature for Areca palms is around +12.7°C. The best temperature for them in winter is around 16°C, so keep them at home in the winter

EatYourBackyard You can do these in containers as a privacy fence with just a little framing to hide the pots and keep them upright in storms. Three layers deep and sell the tall layer on Craigslist every year. Not sure if this link will work but google areca palms in containers and select images to see some great applications. www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CAcQjRxqFQoTCOfeq9Cj3cYCFUiVHgod4yQAxw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fanswermeup.com%2Fquestions%2Ftransplant-areca-palm-tree.html&ei=9mSmVeeLAciqeuPJgLgM&bvm=bv.97653015,d.dmo&psig=AFQjCNFBkB122oIkPoayA8Znjt3qSDaSXQ&ust=1437054552162502

Well, if you grow them in a pot, that really slows the growth. In loose sandy soil like we have, with lots of humidity and water, they really take off. You should be fine if they are in a pot.
